Why do people still listen to those shiatbags? Sea Shepherd has no credibility. Zip. Zero. It is safe to assume that anything they say is a lie unless proven otherwise.

OK, fine, maybe the branding does or does not kill the sealions.  Peta and other people on the far left may not be exactly be authorities on animal behavior.

But they are tracking them for eating salmon?  And will harass them and maybe kill them if they hunt salmon at dams?

How is this much different then Japanese killing dolphins.  If the sealions are the threat and we are not looking at homo sapiens, something is wrong here.

They should brand the Sea Shepherds.

Some Japanese eat dolphins. Some Nordic people eat seals (and whales). You mess with someone's food supply and you're gonna die, be you man or beast. The biggest difference is, the beast is usually eaten.

"Frankly, we're not entirely convinced it's the same animal," the update said.
That is some spectacular bad faith

"He's still slated to die," she said, "either by starvation because he can't eat fish, or by humans if he's seen eating fish."
More bad faith. Notice the jump from killing sea lions who eat endangered spawning salmon to killing sea lions who eat any fish.
Lying idiots. The worst part about this is the credibility these liars have in parts of the world outside North America.  Thanks to lies like these (and others such as those around the Newfoundland seal hunt), they have no difficulty in raising the millions of dollars required by their operation. The fact that they, and other conservation groups, are really multi-multi-million dollar transnational corporations who lie barefacedly in order to survive and keep the money flowing in, somehow never gets a mention.

As a general rule, I've no issue with hunting for food - to a point.  Hell, I'm even okay with trophy hunting if the species is in abundance.  When they aren't, it's time to dial back the hunting and let them recover appropriately.

However, the folks on the Sea Shepherd manage to make me cheer for the whalers.

Well, if we are going to gauge patriotism by who avoided serving in Vietnam and who didn't, then let's not forget former president George W Bush, who spent the Vietnam War defending the skies over Amarillo against the Viet Cong in the Texas Air National Guard. (He did a good job, too. Not ONE Viet Cong soldier got past him on HIS watch).

Hey I'm down with conscientious objectors to enforced service in time of war but running around wearing the flag of your nation's professed enemy isn't going to win you any points with anyone. Ever.

I'm in California and this is the first I've heard of it. Then again, I'm a city kid who flees to the mountains for skiing, my sister is the beach slumming surfer. She's also not home right now or I'd ask her if she's noticed any dead sea lions bobbing about where they shouldn't be.

As a frequent visitor to San Francisco and Pier 39 cuz I like a couple of their tourist traps, I can tell you that they smell bad enough when they're alive. I can't imagine being downwind from a bunch of dead ones. I also hope they find out what is killing them like that. We are kind of protective of our wildlife out here, as anyone who has had to either watch their home burn to the ground or face the potential wrath of CalEPA if they disc the area around it during fire season can readily verify.

2013-03-31 10:27:13 AM
Not really, Sea Shepherd says. In an update Thursday night, the group said ODFW began branding sea lions out of sight after the announcement of Justice's demise. "Frankly, we're not entirely convinced it's the same animal," the update said.

I didn't really know much about Sea Shepherd's reputation or character prior to clicking the link (I half-thought they might be Scientologists - no, that's SeaOrg), but that quote tells me everything I need to know.

Facts don't fit your narrative?  It's a conspiracy!

OK, Perhaps I am missing something so I am hoping that some one could fill me in.
The Salmon are wild animals, not farmed or privately owned, correct?
The Sea Lions are wild animals?
We learned in school that animals (and migratory people) follow their food source when it moves.
Why would these Sea Lions not follow or go after these Salmon?
No, you cant eat these tasty easy to grab fish because those land based animals say so?
Do we have some kind of government program teaching these wild sea lions not to eat this specific Salmon?
A bunch of scuba divers with white boards drawing them pictures out in the pacific?

While I think that most environmentalists are nutters, this does seem like a really really stupid thing for our government to do...

Doesn't matter. Once your country has either started or joined a war with someone, they become the enemy of your country regardless of whether or not you want them to be or whether or not they want to be. Object all you want, just realize that who you visibly align yourself with may do more harm than good to your position on the matter. That's all I'm sayin'.

kroonermanblack: Crazy nutbag extremists lie? Never.

It's not that they lie. It's that they're too stupid to make proper assessments of what they're seeing.

Think of how a 3 year old kid is amazed by the floating thumb trick. Or an adult playing peekaboo with an infant by covering the infant's eyes. It's the same principle but on a larger scale.

"OMG! He disappeared! Where did he go?"

Brainsick: You mean he didn't willingly walk into the Nam meat grinder like a good puppet? That's downright un-American, Mr. Birch!

I think there's a difference between saying something is wrong and saying something is wrong and then openly supporting the other side. For all the talk of American atrocities the VC and NVA ended up killing hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese civilians through ideological purges. I suppose one could protest American involvement in it as an isolationist but picking up the banner of the other side? People are okay with the ACLU defending the KKK. If the ACLU not only defended the KKK but started wearing their white robes, I think people would have a problem with that.

duke3522: So they're churches then?

Essentially, yes.  Turns out that as old cults and beliefs wane in influence, new ones based on a twisted interpretation of the modern understanding of the world (as opposed to twisted interpretations of the bronze age understanding of the world) will tend to crop up.  Alien abductions, psychic powers based on "quantum", 'environmentalism' based on arbitrarily shielding mammalian populations exclusively with no regard for other factors, etc.

The enviro nutbags are the most annoying, probably, because laymen have difficulty distinguishing a money laundering operation/cult like Greenpeace from a legitimate advocacy group that's based on scientifically sound advising like the Sierra club, and there's so much hogwash in the data-set at this point that the less-educated members of even legitimate organizations sometimes don't have the knowledge to filter it.

2013-03-31 11:36:38 AM
Ok so the sea lion is eating salmon, probably part of its diet.  Circle of life nature all that stuff.  Sea lion is eating the salmon which is interfering with fishermen in the area, effectively interfering with their economy.  So the government has a program to monitor sea lions to see if they have problems with certain ones.  So they brand them.  I don't watch whale wars, nor care for the sea shepherds or their actions.  But branding doesn't exactly tickle either.  So as to shut those asses up, instead of branding, why didn't they microchip them?  Not as painful and you can track them by gps.  provide the frequencies to the sea shepherds and then they can shut the fark up and go back to ramming whaling ships in the Antarctic ocean.
