I think Morsi just stepped in it big time
Bassem Youssef has been on the Daily Show and is known outside of Egypt, maybe not well but enough. Any attempts to prove new boss not the same as the old boss are going out the window. Morsi is showing a great deal of ineptness and the excuse of blaming the past regime are falling to the wayside

I remember saying that the Muslim Brotherhood was going to take over Egypt back when people were singing the praises about the revolution... I remember being denounced on all sides for being an "islamophobe" and various other things.

The MB weren't doing this for political power!

Now we see Egypt is degenerating in to the next Iran, just as anyone with sense predicted it would.

I remember being quite impressed by Dr Bassem Youssef's appearance on TDS both by his sense of humor and his courage for being a satirist in a country still as oppressed as Egypt. Him taking a picture of his chair on TDS after confirming that Catherine Zeta Jones had indeed sat in it previously gave me a chuckle.  Sad to see my fears for him realized. Hopefully the Egyptian powers-that-be figure out sometime soon that arresting a popular satirist is a really, really bad idea that can only blow up in their faces and hopefully after this realization sinks in cooler heads will prevail.

So you're advocating against Democracy if they elect someone we don't like? Should we have forcefully installed the "right" regime? Because, y'know, that tends to turn out even worse in the long run.

Theocracies are only ok if they're Christian.  Or Jewish but no Christians live there.

2013-03-30 05:58:10 PM
Good.

The Muslim Brotherhood's credibility rested entirely on the fact that they promised to offer a better life for the people without ever actually having to deliver on that promise. Now that they're in a position to where they have to govern, they're making a mess for it and destroying that credibility.

Indeed. And the EXACT same shiat would happen if America became a Christian theocracy. Hell, you had 'Christians' calling for blood when some college kid didn't eat his Jesus Cracker a while back. The Piss Christ guy would likely have gotten the death penalty in a Christian theocracy.

The thing about free elections is that sometimes people you don't like get elected. So unless you have evidence that the elections in Egypt were in some way fraudulent you may want to unknot your panties and accept that maybe, just maybe, people in other parts of the world think differently than you do.

Having said that, in response to the charge that Bassem Youssef insulted Islam, I'd like to say "fark Islam and fark the prophet".

Still a better than fifty percent chance of a military coup in Egypt--their generals certainly don't want to be obliged to lose another embarrassing and costly war with Israel The Islamists are consolidating their power in Tunisia as well and we can expect the same in Syria after Assad is overthrown.

Arabs simply don't know how to handle democracy. They pay it lip service but when finally given the ballot their immediate impulse is to strip themselves of the vote and institute a theocracy. It happened in Algeria, it happened in Gaza, it happened in Iran (not Arab, but still) and it will happen ultimately in Yemen, Afghanistan and Iraq. Their religion is still mired in the 14th century and until they're able to reform themselves they will stay there. The West's best bet is to wean ourselves permanently off Mideast oil, let them slide back into poverty and ignorance and seal the area off until they're ready to join the modern world.

FTFA: But sketches in which he portrayed Mr. Morsi as a pharaoh, calling him "Super Morsi" for holding on to executive and legislative powers,

Portraying the President of Egypt as a Pharaoh? Wow--that is indeed explosive. That's the pinnacle of disgust in Egyptian society, not to mention Islam as a whole. Pharaoh is practically the most evil figure in the entire Quran, moreso than the Devil, even. But its not surprising they would charge him with "insulting Islam" -- that's how all such authoritarian regimes discredit all poltiical dissidents they want to silence. Either that or charging them with insulting "Turkishness" in Turkey or the Monarchy in Jordan. Authoritarian assholes, the lot of them.

In case you were curious, though I doubt you are, he's a troll/shill/derpster because he regularly posts statements entirely devoid of fact (see, if you will, the post you quoted) and then leaves, only popping back in to make unqualified, unproven statements, cited to extremely slanted sources when at all, and then immediately leaving again. This process is called, most commonly, "threadshiatting" and the idiot who you quoted has been doing it on Fark, under various names, for years.

So... while I doubt you'll respond with anything material, I welcome you to tell us in which of these 27 NYT articles containing the words "Morsi," and "Moderate," (every article that fits that description released by the paper) the NYT describes him as Moderate.

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/mohamed _m orsi/index.html?offset=10&s=newest&query=moderate&field=body&match=any

(Here's a clue: None. Though they do say once that he tries to portray him that way, but honestly the most common adjective for him is an accurate "Islamist.")

Not sure why I'm responding to the neophyte shill, but pointing out when illiterate wannabe trolls are trying to somehow make themselves relevant to an adults' discussion amuses me.
