I hope he writes it in a snarky style and comments on the negatives of the "war on drugs" and its commiserate increase in corporate lobbying from the private prison sector and arms manufacturers.

Also one would hope he would spend a paragraph or two talking about the dangers of a kilo of pot falling from a high height and hitting a person on the head.

Two kilos and intent to distribute?  Here in 'merica the guy would have been locked up for the rest of his life.

Because we love freedom.

You know what, compared to US pot laws that actually seems like a sensible sentence. If they gave courts any discretion here, you might see creative sentencing reduce both repeat offenders (who got a great second chance) and the hatred the informed sect of our society feels towards mandatory minimums that ruin lives.

During AIT, when we were allowed to have CD players, I accidentally left mine in plain view when I went to sleep so the night-shift DS stole it, and made me write an essay to get it back. I shrugged and was like 'okay' because 500 words or whatever it was was cake.

After that, I put the thing under the blankets so they couldn't get it again...

snocone: So, a work of fiction.

The idea that cannabis has no negative effects is as ludicrous as the Reefer Madness alternative. The war on drugs has been discredited (for intelligent people) by hyperbole; it would be a great disservice to do the same for the pro-legalisation argument.

As someone who assigns essays professionally, I'll be the first to say that making them part of a criminal sentence is farked up and bullshiat even before a judge slathers on the transparently useless restrictions on what conclusions the perp is supposed to come to.

As freedom-loving Farkers will tell you, I'm a fascist wannabe who never met a cop/judge/tool of the state whose dick I didn't want to slobber all over.* But my God, if we have to have judges playing at being the Thought Police, could they at least do a better job of it? Forcing people to write things you know they don't believe or go to jail demeans  everyone, starting with the government that lets it happen.

ON THE OTHER HAND

An essay for getting busted with 35 ounces of pot? Fire up that word processor, son.

* Which is true, but not for the reasons they're talking about

Got any like science stuff to back up the derp?
Thought not.
The plant is non toxic, there is no lethal dosage. That is backed up by thousands of years of documented experience with the plant(starting with cave pictures and of course, the wall art of the pyramids), not 80 years of manufactured lies. It is backed up by three federally funded comprehensive studies since 1950, all completely buried when published.
It does not make black men rape white women.

Guessing he meant Advanced Infantry Training, where grunts go after boot camp to learn the specialties of their trade.

When I was in "boot" (plebe summer), a guy in our squad lost his ass for two days to the squad leader, and, yup, had to write an essay to earn his ass back.

/Though given we already had to ask permission to do pretty much anything involving our asses (take a dump, sit for a meal, lecture, class, etc., losing one's ass wasn't such a big deal.

The only real problem here is that asking someone write 5,000 words about the "dangers of pot" is basically asking for a work of fiction. Sure, there are some negative affects possible but stretching those things out to 5,000 words is going to take some real work.

Acetaminophen is EXTREAMELY toxic and DANGEROUS!
Do not exceed dosage and do not use long term even at recommended dosage.

"Acetaminophen overdose is one of the most common poisonings worldwide. People often think that acetaminophen, a pain-relieving medicine, is extremely safe. However, it may be deadly if taken in large doses.
This is for information only and not for use in the treatment or management of an actual poison exposure. If you have an exposure, you should call your local emergency number (such as 911) or the National Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222."

Look, we can't gloss over the bad parts of cannabis to appease the legalization movement. While it may not cause cancer, and while it may not have an LD50 that's even practical in normal usage, it does have three known harmful effects (not including idiotic sentences and jailtime or a felony record):

1) COPD, assuming you're smoking it. Most inhaled smoke is exhaled, but some does get absorbed the mucous lining of various airways. This, in turn, builds up to contribute to COPD.
2) Endocrinological effects. There is quite a bit of evidence that heavy users can experience hormonal issues, and run an increased risk of testicular cancer. This one is independent of smoking, IIRC.Have you ever met a heavy smoker that didn't get a little irritable if they go a day or two without?
3) Emphysema. For the same reasoning as the COPD basically, smoking anything can lead up to emphysema. It's not on the same level as tobacco, but it's not trivial.

That being said, the consequences to our society of arresting otherwise productive members of society, and giving people records that will cost them chances at jobs/etc, are completely asinine when compared to the actual dangers of marijuana use. It should never have been illegal, and it was made illegal by corporate greed not danger.

To be fair, there *is* a lethal dosage.   But the lethal dosage is more likely to kill you if it fell on you than it is by you smoking it up, because it would be physically impossible for you to smoke that much pot.

And believe me, I've tried.

Of course the term "stoner" is universally used to mean a happy, well adjusted person who has achieved their full potential. And you'd be entirely happy to have people driving while stoned.

Do I think pot should be illegal? No.
But let's not fool ourselves and pretend you can't even burn yourself with a lot joint. Inhaling unfiltered smoke can't be good for your lungs, and it surely has some psychological and physiological effects or you wouldn't be smoking it (some of those affects are negative such as delayed reaction time, the munchies, and general malaise). 5000 words is a lot, but who of us hasn't padded an essay in our lives?

As far as I am concerned, the worst of the 'bad things' about pot is the quality control.  Unless you grow it yourself, you really have no idea what other things you might be ingesting.  I mean, look at all the adulterated foods we eat, and those are even after the FDA inspects stuff.  Can you imagine trying to wash your pot before using, like we have to now with pre-washed, bagged salad?

Legalize it now, just so the ditch weed with the Round-Up glaze gets pushed out of the market.

I recently found out that a distant friend of mine had died of cancer. In discussions with her brother, I found the chemotherapy made her feel so badly, that she stopped it for a time -- which I figure aided in her demise.

When I knew her younger self, she smoked pot now and then, but, married and after having a kid, she apparently gave up her 'wild ways'. (Another reason, IMO, not to have kids.)

So I asked if anyone had given her pot -- and was assured that no one had. I pointed out that they should have because pot has the effect of decreasing the unpleasant symptoms of Chemo and would have encouraged her failing appetite.

I recommend pot for anyone who has to go through the ghastly hell of chemotherapy. It's been proven far too many times to help to be considered a bunch of BS.
