I have a small greenhouse in my back yard, around 8' X 12'.  I use it to overwinter stuff, start seeds, extend growing seasons on cherry tomatoes and some peppers.  It's funny how when anyone is in the back yard, (lawn treatments, there's a phone junction back there, a raised manhole cover for city sewer lines, and power lines that trees need to be trimmed, utilities) the workers always have to look in there. Sometimes i just watch them as they look disappointed that there are only regular everyday things in there.

FTA But the Hartes' attorney, Cheryl Pilate, said she suspects the couple's 1,825-square-foot split level was targeted because they had bought hydroponic equipment to grow a small number of tomatoes and squash plants in their basement.

I hope their attorney crucifies the police dept in court.

Snort: Look at the fricking warrant! They have to provide some evidence for wanting to search a home.

You're full of derp. The only mention of a warrant is this: During the sweep, the court filing said, the Hartes were told they had been under surveillance for months, but the couple "know of no basis for conducting such surveillance nor do they believe such surveillance would have produced any facts supporting the issuance of a search warrant."

No where in the article does it say they were actually presented with a warrant, which may in fact be the whole point of this lawsuit. Granted it could go either way, but based on the actual text, there's no way to know if there was a warrant or not.

Step 1) build growhouse and stock it with tomato plants at first
Step 2) make sure it gets raided by soon-to-be-embarrassed police
Step 3) Switch it out for pot, knowing sheriff's department doesn't want another lawsuit..

It costs too damn much money to shoot someone, justified or not.

Who cares if the government infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens as long as it allows law enforcement to stop just one bad person?  They admit they are somewhat wealthy so they can afford to buy organic vegetables at their local market.  They didn't need this equipment to provide for their family.  Greedy bastards...trying to preserve their wealth.  Plus they weren't charged with anything so no harm, no foul right?

Go to a hippy store and buy hydroponics supplies and you might be placed on a watch list, hell you have already handed the police probable cause.

Go to home depot, buy some water pumps, 2$ buckets and tubing.  Nobody notices, your probably making a pond.

2013-03-30 12:46:57 PM
This happened to an old girlfriend of mine's father. They were living in a commune in the late '60s down the Klamath River, and the Sheriff's Department served a warrant and destroyed their entire garden, and confiscated almost 50 pounds in immature tomato plants. They bragged about it in the local press, until the plants were identified.

No apology was ever issued, and to this day her dad (who shares a nick-name bestowed upon him by law enforcement with a resident Farker) whenever he passes by any Sheriff's officer, gives them the one-finger salute.

/and they never found the real plants...

Amazon.com has quite the good selection of random growing stuff. Boxes with Amazon labels on them are certainly discreet. But they probably sell the names of people that buy light bulbs to the feds.

Depends if they remember to stick a post it note on their maps.

Some PD's have made a game out of repeatedly hitting the wrong houses.
My suspicion: If you get on their map while growing tomatoes, you're address will probably keep coming up for the same reasons they hit you originally.

There were millions of places they could have gone, but obviously you're doing something wrong enough to get their attention.

No, because the country would be like..... well, Fark.

Recently had some HVAC guys in replacing stuff.  Forgot my grow lights and other tomato seed starting stuff was propped in the corner of the basement.  Haven't had any knocks at the door yet.  If they do, I can offer some nice looking Beefsteak seedlings.

pretty sure they had a warrant. the problem is "did they have just cause for the warrant?"  did they lie to the judge to get the warrant? upon which criteria did they justify their months long surveillance?  they saw them leave the hydroponics store?  is that all it takes to get the cops to do a stakeout on you?

2013-03-30 12:54:15 PM
Every time I see the cops pulling into the apartment complex, it always runs through my mind that my door is going to be the next one they knock on (or knock in as the case sometimes is).  I grow most of my plants under lights in semi-hydro fashion.  After dark, my bedroom window illuminates the whole corner of my building even with the blinds closed and my neighbors and the maintenance staff have flat out asked if I'm growing weed or told me they assumed I was.  Of course, I do periodically hit up the hydroponics shop -- where I always feel a little uncomfy going into because of the stereotype and the odd chance that I'm being monitored.

It's really a shame, too.  You can't grow indoor plants as a dedicated hobby without being cast into a shadow of suspicion.  Never mind the fact that I'm growing beautiful orchids, bromeliads, cacti, succulents and even garden vegetables and herbs.  In fact, I just harvested some of the most amazing smelling and best tasting rosemary from my bedroom yesterday and used it to flavor up my pork chops.  I can't wait to see how the peppers turn out once they start maturing.

They were improperly targeted.  But it probably started from their purchase of hydroponic supplies, not just the lights and planting supplies.  Many of the higher end pot systems are using hydroponic.

(Want great growing tips?  Buy some of those ridiculous marijuana grower magazines (which will also get you flagged).  They may be useless drug dealers, but they are determined when it comes to the grow.  Great fertilizer tips.

Yes.  Its always the victims fault.  And never incompetent police.  Always.
