ransack.: If one possesses "cloaking" technology, why would one ever choose to "de-cloak"?

I guess I can't pretend to understand extraterrestrial logic.

Maybe you have to de-cloak to take a dump. Otherwise the dump would be cloaked and that's not a good thing...to have cloaked poop floating, nilly-willy, through space. Especially if it's at a crowded space-time.

babe
/bāb/Noun
A baby.
An innocent or helpless person.

Synonyms
baby - infant - child - kid

Honestly though, it's surprisingly hard to find a picture of: 1. a girl covered in mud, 2. of age, 3. sfw.  I spent almost 30 secs looking and that was the best I could come up with.

oukewldave: Why is it zooming in and out and all over the place?  I would assume a camera on the ISS is stationary.  This is either shopped or lightning.

I think whoever put together the video was magnifying the source video.

Ooohh. And it's prolly just a reflection from a nearby satellite's solar panels.

Nearby = 1013 Kms

...or a cloaked turd

Where the hell is aliens guy?

2013-03-30 12:56:47 PM
It's an aurora. Charged particles hitting the upper atmosphere. Or, more likely, a reflection on the lens.

It's a faaaaake!!

Don't you understand?! It's real!!

/... ly probably reflection of glass.

I really like the phrase "cloaked poop" and I have a mental image of a sign next to the astro-toilet "PLEASE DE-CLOAK YOUR DUMPS"

Thank you for that

Also it made me chuckle because I thought about an 80,000ft poop-dump from an SR-71 where your dump instantly freezes solid and causes a Mach2 sonic poop-boom before it melts and splatters some Russian peasants

Revek: Reflection in the glass.

Answered in one.

TomRose: Is there glass in space?

OMG no.  I just realized that we can't explain how anyone is taking videos through the solid, windowless walls of the space station.

basemetal: Un cloaking?  Someone's been watching too much Star Trek.

Well, actual scientists on earth have managed to make an invisibility cloak for small objects that don't move... so it's not that far off.  Of course, we don't have any farking space ships, so I don't know the cloak would be for.

Personally, I think a "sprite" would fit the bill... They've been mentioned a few times upthread, amazing phenomenon that we've observed often, and they look like that.

As do about a zillion other phenomenon.

This is what truly astonishes me...

Given all the possibilities, all the different ways a nebulous, grey pattern might show up in a photograph...

Aliens decloaking? REALLY?

Sure, that's certainly the most *interesting* interpretation, but there's some pretty amazing ones closer to home that fit a lot better and don't require quite so many assumptions. It's the jump from "I see a smudge, therefore aliens with cloaking phenomenon" that blows my mind.

It's ice crystals from the ISS space toilet.

Yawn

"All right, there was no alien. The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus."

Amazed no one else figured this out.

Whatever it is, it's perfectly matched the to the velocity of whatever that camera is mounted on.

That makes me think that it's a abberation with the lens. I don't know where that camera is mounted, but if it is inside the IIS, shooting through a port of some kind, I'd guess it's a reflection of something that catches a glint of light.

2013-03-30 02:21:51 PM
Why was this even greenlit?
it's not a massive object coicidentally out of focus but a speck too close to the camera.

One would thing the ISS would have a camera capable of taking a picture clearer than what you get on a $20 cell phone.

CSB:
I transcontinental flight one night that had to go around some thunderstorms, the turbulence had made some of the infrequent fliers rather skittish.  After things had mostly cleared a lady on the other side of the aisle two rows ahead of me started freaking out because she swore she could see a UFO flying next to the plane.  Her husband and the guy opposite her thought they might be able to see something, but we're sure, and she hammered at the call button until a flight attendant came over.  When the lady bent down to look out the window, naturally, the UFO vanished, but then re-appeared just as the flight attendant walked away.  After the second time the UFO disappeared, the flight attendant asked the crazy lady to keep her eyes on it and tell her if it disappeared.  She then casually turns off a reading lamp on the row ahead of me.  The crazy lady confirmed that the UFO had indeed disappeared again, and then re-appeared the moment the reading lamp was turned back on.  Our lovely flight attendant asked the lady's husband if he understood what was going on, and then asked him to explain it to the crazy one.
Not quite epic, but funny.
Probably HTBT.
