It's great that they caught this so that the little girl can be reunited with her father.

To be fair, he tried to "sell" custody of the child to the child's great-grandmother (who was already taking care of the kids). Still farked up, but it's not like he was selling the kid into slavery or something.

That's part of the solution.  As in, he shouldn't have a kid.

Of course, you can't sell a black kid for that much...

Yeah, this.

While farked up, and illegal ("illegal payments in connection with placement of a child" apparently under TN law), it is misleading to imply the kid was being "sold".  From the kids perspective, she'd keep living with her grandmother like she had been for the past week.

Basically he was telling the relative that had already taking care of the kids that he'd sign over full custody for $1500.

Even if he was selling the girl to a stranger shw woudl probably be better off.  Hopefully the relative can get full custody now.

Sounds to me like grandma found a way to save $1500 by calling the cops.

Silverstaff: Now, with regards to "buying" or "selling" a kid, I've got a story, dunno if it counts as a CSB.

When my wife was very young, about 4 or 5, her mother was about to move from Kentucky to California with her new boyfriend.

The entire extended family objected to this, saying they thought it would be bad for the little girl, and nobody trusted the boyfriend.  Everybody thought he was a total creep, lots of people suspected he was a pedo.

--snip--

I just wanted to say that's one of the saddest and most horrifying family experiences I've heard. How tragic. Thank god she managed to pull things together (mostly, at least) and live a normal life. Kudos to her.

The extended family: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents. . .took up a collection of around three thousand dollars (circa 1990).  They offered her mother this money in cash if she'd sign over full legal and physical custody of her daughter, waiving all visitation rights, to the grandparents (they even had the papers drawn up, she just had to have them signed and notarized).  She could move out of state with her boyfriend and have a big lump sum of cash to go with it.

Her mother wouldn't hear of it, they moved to California.  Lo and behold, yup, he was a pedo.  He was busted for sexual abuse charges after less than a year there, and that little girl would end up in foster care for almost 5 years while they sorted the mess out legally.

Her extended family begged and pleaded and kept trying to get custody, but of course California would never let a child out of "the system" if it didn't have to, especially to go out-of-state.  Eventually her mother got custody back and they moved back to Kentucky.  The entire experience (she says the ordeal of foster care was as bad for her, or worse, emotionally as the molestation) left her with a lot of problems.

However, it would have all been avoided if the attempt by the grandparents to "buy" her had been successful.  So yeah, it's not always a bad thing when a deal like this with money is being thrown around in a family.  What it means is there is a serious problem there because somebody is either willing to part with the child for money, or somebody is that serious about getting custody away from somebody the are willing to throw down money.
