Nina_Hartley's_Ass: "Five Comics My Boyfriend Told Me Were Good"

Done in one.

Old news is so exciting said no one ever.

2013-03-30 12:59:56 AM
What's the deal with 5?
The list has Superheroes/supernatural stuff and then something about "two women experiencing life" or some crap.
What did they pay for this greenlight?  (and they definitely paid to even have their own icon suddenly)

Lord of the Rings
X-Men
Star Wars
The Golden Girls
Alien

Someone recommended Preacher to me, so I gave it a chance.  This is what I remember of it:  a guy getting his dick chopped off, someone getting shiat smeared on his face, vomit, a disgustingly obese man, that obese man getting shiat smeared on his face, someone else getting their dick ripped off, vomit, disembowelment, a guy getting his jaw blown off, a guy being forced to wipe another man's ass, homosexual rape and another guy getting his dick ripped off and having it replaced with a spigot for comedic effect.

No other comic I've read comes anywhere close to being so vile.  Preacher is a disgustingly irredeemable comic book, and Warren Ellis has issues.

Wow.
You mean "Five comics you should've read."

Y'know. When they were new.

2013-03-30 01:32:38 AM
What is this, 1995?  Yes, they were all great series, but it's 2013 and pretty damn awesome here.

Saga
Walking Dead
DMZ
Hawkeye (Matt Fraction's series)
Shanower/Young's Oz adaptations
Witch Doctor

And on like that for a while.

2013-03-30 01:35:53 AM
List is not complete without Transmetropolitan and The Boys

2013-03-30 01:40:17 AM
that list was so cliche im surprised there wasn't Dark Knight Returns

Warren Ellis didn't do Preacher.

All of the comics in TFA are 10 years old or older. If you want something current, Saga is freakin' amazing.

You mean Garth Ennis. Warren Ellis wrote other, even more wonderfully vile comic books.

Almost got me.

should be looking at, reading is something a bit different.

With a name like that, I thought this would be all indie stuff I've never heard of. A try to initiate us to some lesser known stuff. I haven't purchased a comic in over a decade and I've at least heard of all of those.

If you're doing a list like that, where the hell is Sandman? WHAR????!

I never understood the love for "Preacher". It tries to hard to be "edgy". And I mean that in the most obnoxious, marketing-driven sense of the word.

Warren Ellis is the best, though. It's too bad he never properly finishes anything.

/really wish "Desolation Jones" had kept going

Well, probably, but what does he have to do with Preacher?

Also, list fails without Sandman.

At least Fell is starting up again.

Crap, I know who both of them are, and had a brain fart moment.  I meant to say Garth Ennis.  I screwed that up, and it kind of ruined my point for me.

I wasn't trolling.  That's really my opinion.  I know that a lot of people like Preacher.  I don't know how they can stomach that kind of stuff.  I know there's an adventure story going on there, and some cool and interesting characters at the heart of it, but they're at the bottom of a huge pile of shiat, blood, vomit, pus, severed penises and ripped intestines.  I'm not digging thru that.  I don't think it's sanctimonious to point out that Ennis made the whole comic as gross and disgusting as he possibly could, and did a damned fine job of it.  Now, if you're into that sort of thing, fine, I, but what really bugs me about Preacher is that it somehow has this fantastic reputation when it's nothing more than an extended geek show designed to gross out the reader.  A well-written geek show, true, but a geek show.

2013-03-30 04:07:58 AM
Count me amongst the people who couldn't get into Preacher. After hearing so much about it over the years I gave it a shot, but lost all interest around issue 25 or so, having gotten increasingly bored with it. It just seemed hokey. A combination of it possibly being dated badly and Ennis trying too hard to be shocking.

So then I tried The Boys, with major reservations. I liked that much better, even though it also has pĺenty of over-the-top Ennis. It wasn't some vital piece of literature told with pictures, but it was entertaining enough, despite the fact that I never liked the protagonist at all.

It's over in the corner listening to My Chemical Romance and cutting itself because it wasn't on the list.

Television's going down the same road. I can't watch most of it anymore, not while wincing.

As others have said, that list is pretty much 1995 all over again.

Want some modern stuff?

Saga
The Massive
Hawkeye
Deadpool Killistrated
Batman (yes, it's been good)
Adventure Time
The new relaunch of the Valiant books (Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong, Bloodshot, X-O Manowar and Harbinger are all solid)

Oh no, fark NuValiant.

Any company planning on rebooting Quantum and Woody without Christopher Priest and MD Bright, and rastifying the characters for the new millennium and making them brothers can go straight to hell.

That is true.

But Quantum and Woody? That book was Priest and Bright. It was essentially creator-owned. To do it without them is like doing Watchmen without Alan Moore.

/and considering Acclaim screwed the creators out of the characters, that makes it even worse.

I'm wondering if we'll see a Trinity Angels books without Kevin Maguire.  He'll be PISSED if that happens.

WTF is up with this list?

Yes, list definitely fails without Transmetropolitan, but no consideration for:

I mean, the place is populated by women, dealing with their grief over the loss of all males everywhere.  The comic series is loved by both sexes, and she didn't pick this one?!

/still waiting for a movie trilogy to come out for this one...

If it were any company other than DC, Preacher, Transmetropolitan, and Y: The Last Man would already have been developed for live action, and Fables would have been on one of the networks instead of Grimm or Once Upon A Time.

But for the most part, WBDC really sucks at developing their properties into successful movies or TV shows, unless the main character has bat ears.

Cerebus before Dave Sim went insane was really good. That's what happens when you stop smoking pot, though.

Could they even make a movie, or perhaps an HBO series, out of Transmetropolitan?  Maybe there aren't enough drugs in the world to pull it off.

I think Fone Bone should have stayed with Thorn. It didn't seem right that they went through all that together and he just takes off.

About a decade or so ago, Patrick Stewart wanted to star as Spider Jerusalem.

"Should be reading" definitely applies to things that are running or releasing  now. You shouldn't  be reading "The Watchmen", you should  have read "The Watchmen".

Dog Welder: Saga

"Saga" is one of my "looks forward to" books every month. "Chew" and "Skullkickers" are also high up on the list.

Which I still don't really see working. Given his work on  Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Johnny Depp would have made a better Spider.
