Look, you can't lay all that on my shoulders. Don't you know how much this place stinks? Don't you know what it's like to stand day after day in blood? In the blood of children? I hate this place. And if I can't stand up to it to your satisfaction, then --- then the hell with it. How dare you? The hell with your Iowa naivete, and the hell with your hero worship and your teddy bear, and while you're at it, the hell with you. Why don't you grow up for crying out loud? I'm not here for you to admire. I'm here to pull bodies out of a sausage grinder -- if possible, without going crazy. Period.

Best Korea is at war with Better Korea. They have *always* been at war with Better Korea (at least, since 1950). The temporary lull in actual shooting at each other full-time has only existed since the US got the UN (minus China, which was absent for the vote in the Security Council) to kick their asses and forced them to sign an armistice in 1953. Kim Jong-Un can't count on Chinese "volunteers" to bail his ass out this time.

It was the USSR which wasn't present, China was. . .well, the ROC at least, don't forget that the Republic of China (aka Taiwan) was the China that held the UN seat until the PRC pulled some chickenshiat political games and got the ROC kicked out and replaced with the PRC, leaving the ROC being an independent sovereign nation de-facto banished from the U.N. because of the arrogant hubris of the "One China" policy.

I used to live in Korea. North Korea does this on at least a quarterly basis; far more often if they feel sad and want extra attention. Their declarations of imminent war are treated just one step less seriously than crazy drunken hoboes' declarations of war.

I think everyone in Korea believes that it could happen... and most of them probably believe that the head crazy drunken hobo probably WILL pull the trigger someday... but he has been hysterically threatening to commit suicide by warfare every week for 60 years.

Nobody there even hears it anymore- it's just background noise.

The only new thing happening is that NewKim's press corps is actively seeking a new audience for their noise, with some success.

Although you're right, it is mostly like the last 50 years since the war never actually ended.  He did say that he is invalidating the armistice, but practically speaking nothing actually changes unless someone starts lobbing bombs.  There is no way that he is gonna be the one to start unless he is completely delusional and believed his dad's own propaganda, because he would be annihilated pretty quickly.

Ugh.

I've been content to dismiss North Korea's peener waving as just attention-whoring for as long as I've been around.  However, this feels different.  The tempo of their threats; the specificity...It's a little unnerving.

Am I worried about being hit in the US?  Absolutely not.  But I am worried for all those people living within artillery range of the DMZ.  While I do believe US and South Korean forces would be able to shut down their gun emplacements in a matter of hours, think of the havoc that could be caused by five or six hours of shelling a major population center.

I hope to god this is just another ridiculous overture.  Nobody needs another war.

NK really seems like the nation state version of a sleep deprived toddler, throwing progressively worse tantrums in the hope of getting someone to pay attention to them

2013-03-29 09:03:45 PM

Speef: I used to live in Korea.

I have a Korean friend who was in South Korea last couple weeks ago when the sable rattling started. She heard about it less than we did here because it seems like they ignore it so much there.

However I would say this to me seems further than past times. The cut the lines for all communication and say that armistice is no longer.

Pete

The last thing we need is our great warrior/community activist president getting us into another costly war. It's just the kind of stupidity we've come to expect from this thin-skinned, chickenhawk chickensh*t and I bet he's chomping at the bit to jump right in if things go south. As citizens and taxpayers, we must make it a priority to strip war powers from both the president and the congress. All foreign military actions must be paid with war bonds, not tax money, just like World War II. If the people don't support the action and don't buy the bonds, there's no money to fight, and no war. And if our divisive little sh*thead of a president stirs up the usual liberal idiots enough to actually get us involved somewhere, all it will take to get us out is a shift in popular opinion. If we had this model in Iraq, I'm guessing we would have been out after only a couple of years. But the bottom line is this: No tax money for foreign wars!

Repeat

I know the liberals rolled up their war protest banners the very day Obama became president - rolled them up and turned their back on our war-mongering around the globe, but if you - regardless of political party - think this continuous cycle of war is just bullsh*t and, as a society, see this behavior as fundamentally counter-productive then you should probably see at least a little value in what I'm proposing - effectively putting war-making ability directly into the hands of the citizens and taxpayers, just like we did in WW2.

You don't really believe that wars help the economy, do you?  That's a really tired piece of tripe that hasn't been true for a long time.

Since we have gigantic stockpiles of weaponry and military equipment, the industries that produce those things don't need to add new jobs nor innovate new technologies just because a war breaks out.  All war means is that we spend a whole lot of money on deploying people, buying fuel for our existing war machines, and paying medical expenses for injured soldiers.  The last couple wars we fought hurt the economy immensely by sucking up well over a trillion dollars that we didn't have on something that hardly contributed one iota to the country's bottom line.  I don't know if you noticed, but the Iraq war didn't exactly catapult the economy, and the economic climate right now is on the upswing despite the fact that we just ENDED two wars.  We sure as hell don't need another one.

Given that both China and Russia have told Best Korea to STFU and stop rattling their rusty useless sabers, I don't think this will end badly for anyone except the Son of Dear Leader.

More and more, I'm thinking my original scenario was right: Lil' Kim wants his war so he can lose gracefully and surrender to the Americans and hopefully keep his fat retarded head on his mushroom neck; which he cannot do if he has to surrender to the Chinese. There's just no other logical reason--or illogical one, for that matter--for him to be rushing this war that he knows he has no allies for and cannot win.

Seriously, there are times that i think the only reason we haven't already intervened (again that is) is so that no matter what happens in Pakistan, Syria, etc.. that we'll still have a fear-mongering nation the DoD can use to justify a few more billion in military spending.

Perhaps they do, but here's the seriously stupid part.  It's not the 1950's anymore.

Any concentration of activity, in a wilderness, will stand out.  If the surrounding area is not built up, the thermal radiation is easier to detect.  With ground penetrating radar we see where there is activity, since there is nothing above it.  If they have installations, in the middle of nowhere, we'll know it.

But I doubt they've got much besides wordz.

ClavellBCMI: Best Korea is at war with Better Korea.

It was the USSR that was absent, else the UN would never have intervened, leaving the US and its allies to move without UN sanction.  It would have pretty much killed the UN at that point, which was a relatively new body and already having issues because of the Cold War.

2013-03-29 09:31:36 PM
Actually here is my prediction.  They're going to go a bit further.  They WILL execute a military strike and try to kill a few people.  Maybe sink a ship like last time.  Not enough to kick off a war, but enough that they can try and force people to take them to the negotiating table.

From there..who knows.  This is the sort of thing that can get DRASTICALLY out of hand.  so it could stop there, go for the retaliation strike and stop, OR...they get nailed to the wall bad.

If they actually launch on a united states city such as Honolulu....that would be a truly truly bad idea.  Seriously bad idea, and they may not realize how bad of an idea, thinking it would be something along the line of sinking the south Korean ship like they did a couple years ago.

So my bet...60% they try and escalate just a tiny bit (ie shoot up a patrol boat level, or fire some artilary on South Korean military forces on the border) to try and go to the table and negotiate from what they will think is a position of strength, 40% it all quiets down and is nothing.

Now for REAL fun..and paranoia....

What if China has secretly provided them with some state of the art weapons, and Korea uses those to launch accurate attacks on a US mainland city?  Good way for China to see what our defenses are really like, and then China can step in and try and negotiate it down, with the hint that they will step in and defend Korea again?  Maybe just with their navy?  This way lies madness....but the paranoid part of me wonders...what if?

I don't think China would back North Korea on this. They've been giving them stern warnings for quite a while now and their tolerance of NK's douchebaggery is running pretty low.

China realizes that they need countries like China, South Korea and the United States to keep their economy humming (while it still can) so I'm just waiting for the moment China finally biatchslaps North Korea.

Un was actually exposed to the West when he was younger.  He has to know that "we" have vastly superior resources and can squash them.  Sure, millions of people will die in the process, but Best Korea would be absolutely obliterated.

Greywar: Actually here is my prediction.

China has already indicated they don't want Best Korea to start any kind of war, and they've told Lil' Kim to STFU and stand down already, more than once. They are not interested in a shooting war right now. And if they have any "state of the art" weapons, they are so supersecret that nobody in the world knows about them, because the most paranoid freaks out there have not been even thinking about them yet. China has nothing to gain by testing our defenses that way--our military is pretty much out in the open and how we'd respond to a strike on a US mainland city by a genuine military threat is not open to question: It would be with nukes.

Now, if you want to be paranoid, consider this: China's recent hacking attempts have been to steal industrial secrets and commercial patents, which is costly but ultimately useless, since they can always reverse-engineer any patented items. But what if those hacks were not to steal patents and IP, but merely diversions to plant invisible Stuxnet-style viruses, which are now lying dormant inside the corporate servers? They'd be waiting for a certain date in the future, or for a specific number of sales, phone calls, etc., to activate and execute---or maybe just open a backdoor to allow another stealth virus into the system.

Farfetched, perhaps, but two key precepts from Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu are: All warfare is based on deception; and use a diversionary attack to distract your enemy and a direct attack to win. So while we were looking at hacks that were stealing our precious bodily fluids, er, our precious industrial patents, they could have slipped a war virus in behind our backs. Not impossible.

China's navy wouldn't last long on its own.  To have any chance, they'd need to stay within range of air and missile cover from China.  Japan and SK could pretty much shred the Chinese navy if they got very far out of their back yard.
Plus China needs to build up its navy to keep hold of the South China Sea.  Getting a bunch of it sunk will not help with building it up.

Problem with that theory.  You're assuming that those servers wouldn't be replaced/updated/upgraded in such a fashion that any rootkit or logic bomb is removed between now and then.

Stuxnet was so powerful because it targeted extremely specific hardware that the Iranian nuclear program could not function without, and could not be easily replaced.  Random corporate servers are more likely to be replaced.

The Chinese attacks were more likely a testing of defenses and scouting run, and attempting to gain relatively low-clearance material from defense contractors that is not publicly disclosed.

There are ALWAYS NK divisions on the border.

But the North would have to be suicidal - they KNOW how badly out-gunned they are, not to mention their abysmal readiness since the Soviets stopped shipping them ammo for free. Unless they think they can sell China on it having been started by us, which is unlikely, nothing's going to happen.

Okay, granted, they're always in position, but there's quite a difference from being physically there, and being ready to move across the border.  Plus, they've got quite the collection of seismographic equipment to determine if there's any heavy movement into the tunnel network beneath the DMZ.

And mobile.  The claims of being able to "level Seoul" are a bit overblown...just over a dozen of their largest guns might be able to reach Seould....but if they're able to deliver a tactical nuke from one of those puppies....wellll....yeah.

Their military may be very outdated, but keep in mind...they aren't trying to project power around the world like we do.....just the Korean Peninsula...which is the size of...what...Virginia?

He has to know that him and ruling class companions are going to end up hung, castrated or castrated and then hung.  And shot.  If, you know, war actually breaks out for real.

And how 'real' is this?  Are there NK divisions on the border?

There are ALWAYS NK divisions on the border.

But the North would have to be suicidal - they KNOW how badly out-gunned they are, not to mention their abysmal readiness since the Soviets stopped shipping them ammo for free. Unless they think they can sell China on it having been started by us, which is unlikely, nothing's going to happen.

Okay, granted, they're always in position, but there's quite a difference from being physically there, and being ready to move across the border.  Plus, they've got quite the collection of seismographic equipment to determine if there's any heavy movement into the tunnel network beneath the DMZ.

I guess what I was asking is:  Stilgar, do we have wormsign?

Lol - nope. No wormsign. Not one glimmer of a personal shield, no spice crawlers operating, only Fremen around.

Everything I've heard about their nuclear program seems to contend that they probably don't even have a weapon capable of being put on a missile.  So I'm assuming that a tactical nuclear artillery shell is out of their league right now.  What was the range on the one we had in the 50's?  15 miles maybe?  Seoul is well out of range of that.

J. Frank Parnell: Gyrfalcon: China has already indicated they don't want Best Korea to start any kind of war, and they've told Lil' Kim to STFU and stand down already, more than once.

With all due respect, expecting China to make their true feelings and motives clear is naive.

It's entirely possible China would use NK to do things it doesn't want to openly do, but be all "oh North Korea, don't do that!" on the international stage.

War, either directly or by proxy is not in China's interests. They are as tightly wound into the global economy as anyone and anything that hurts their customers is ultimately not good for them, especially if they are seen to be belligerents.

Kim's actions may be as much about testing the new Chinese president, Xi Jinping, who only came to office this month and wants to continue the economic reforms. Not to mention the new South Korean president who came to office last month. It's probably his way of getting their attention.

Gawdzila: wantingout: Its funny that every time economic doom seems imminent, another country comes along that needs invadin'.

No, it isn't like WWII, but it does make certain segments of the economy a shiatton of money, particularly if they are given no bit contracts to do logistics at 3-4 times the cost of the military did it themselves.

I think you carried a decimal point to far in your estimation of the power of their nuke test.  2-6 KT is more likely., add to that the "MIG Series" aircraft - keep in mind that the MIG 15 (which was used where there really was a war in Korea) is a "MIG Series" aircraft.
Doubt what they use for Nuke tests would fit on a sub, while leaving room for fuel and a crew - probably kill them all with radiation before they reached the target.

sorry 4-6 Kt. although I could argue largest yield they have achieved of 6-40 kt, but even so...thats not really big.  not when detonated very far from the coast.  maybe launch some nerve gas weapons instead.  probably freak us out more.

The Mig comment though...NO Mig-15s are listed in their military at the moment.  150+ Mig-21's, 56 Mig-23's, and 35 Mig-29's.  Not a ton of migs...and the Mig-21's are comparable to a F-4, the thing is...if theyre in the air, and the target planes are on the ground, they still win even against F-22's.  And thats the nature of the all out assault.  its the ONLY chance they have.  Cause once the South gets anything in the air they will dominate it with what we consider old equipment like the f-15 and f-16.  And once we join in nothing North Korean will fly for long.

Greywar: sorry 4-6 Kt. although I could argue largest yield they have achieved of 6-40 kt, but even so...thats not really big.  not when detonated very far from the coast.  maybe launch some nerve gas weapons instead.  probably freak us out more.

Total all out assault in a surprise attack is the only time North korea will control the air.

There was a joke in Lithuania in 91 after they got their independence the joke was that the first thing they should do was declare war with the United States. True we would bomb them for a few days but after that we would pay to fix everything!

Yeah... but this time there'd be a lot less to fix.
At least things we broke.

That's the joke. I didn't think it was funny but they sure do

How many satellites do you think we have constantly monitoring all North Korean air fields? I'm pretty sure if they launch more aircraft than a normal day, we immediately get some shiat in the air just in case.

and yeah the patriots would eat them alive, but even so...the aircraft are useless after the first assault anyways.  throw them all in, see what lives.  this isn't a war where you expect to have a lot living at the end of it.  This is a all out blitz.

impressive number while looking some of the details up...we have 1,106 patriot launchers, with over 10,000 missile manufactured.  Thats some impressive stuff.  And from a fighter pilots view those things are dangerous.

We'll know if they're serious long before they do anything.  You just don't 'flip' a switch from peacetime to wartime.  It takes a lot of prep time to get your people ready and positioned, your vehicles fueled and positioned..

And, as I said, no country is more closely watched than NK.  When they move their tanks and APCs into position, fueled up and stuffed full of NK soldiers and the seismograph machines are going nuts, then you can freak out.

This just seems gone dildos crazy.

I'm mostly a Western Europe with a little bit South American politics type, so pretty much lost regarding Best Korea and kin.  But Li'l Kim is the third one of the family in charge after dad and grandpa, yes?

Could a general be twitching, thinking he isn't getting any younger, so lets get this goober out of office by feeding him a line that rattling the saber will make us Yankee Imperialists give them some more food/money?  In this case, escalating it to the aforementioned crazy level, because, well, the U.S. has to give us stuff now that we have nukes and super missiles to take out Austin.

Feed Kim the right disinformation, and he'd likely buy it, nu?  Fire some rounds across the DMZ, get a NK village razed and maybe a few artillery positions taken out.  Speak out publicly that you realize that Kim has gone insane, execute him thanks to some well placed cronies, take the head of state position, humbly pay reparations and accept humanitarian aid, and live happily ever after in charge.

I realize I have no cultural insight other than what I grok of human nature, but this seems to be escalating too quickly and linearly.  Anyone care to point out what mistakes in interpretation I might be making?

Silverstaff: Gyrfalcon: Now, if you want to be paranoid, consider this: China's recent hacking attempts have been to steal industrial secrets and commercial patents, which is costly but ultimately useless, since they can always reverse-engineer any patented items.

But it's not an impossible scenario. And more to the point, it's not one that the average person--or the average spook--is likely to think of. If, as you say, it was a scouting run, they now know such an attack is possible, and if a backdoor run were to be attempted, then a rootkit could be in place to get access to a more specific target.

Mao refined Sun Tzu's theory to say "Make an uproar in the East and attack in the West", so why not? Attack the corporate moneymen who will freak out the loudest, and sneak into the defense networks while nobody is paying attention. It's what I'd do.

Said it two weeks ago, I'll say it again: Red Korea needs food badly.

Sad thing is, this time around Kim Jr. there seems to have no idea when to quit and sit down at the bargaining table for hush money/food, or he has too much to prove to the KPA military establishment/himself. Jong-il knew exactly how much saber-rattling was necessary to satiate egos, and bring home the bacon; Jong-un doesn't seem to have the faith, experience, or know-how, and that's dangerous especially after the 1-2 (depending on who you ask/trust) assassination attempts. I still fully expect him to finally end up assassinated, and we end up with some old fart, on his last leg, who at least knows how to play the diplomatic game for a year or two before  he knocks off and the shiat hits the fan among the next generation of North Korean military leaders.

Update:
North korea has convened a meeting of the central committee of the Korean Worker's Party to decide a "crucial" matter.

My actual real life guess? Probably going "wth, this is getting a bit scary..how should we deal with this to our best benefit?  What can we do to fix our economy, and food situation, while still appearing dangerous enough that no one gets froggy?".

But lets go paranoid for fun.  its more entertaining.

The central committee is signing off on the attack plan, and is just now learning about the subs off of our coast.  Members of the military are standing by outside in case the committee doesn't decide the right way.

To understand what's happening now, you have to look at the history of the place. Most people here seem to pass bad information around, sadly.
The 13th century is described as North Korea's Golden Age, with peace and increase in trade, especially with the British Islands, although Germany became increasingly important towards the end of the century.

Throughout the High Middle Ages the king established North Korea as a state with a central administration with local representatives. In 1349 the Black Death spread to North Korea and had within a year killed a third of the population. Later plagues reduced the population to half the starting point by 1400. Many communities were entire wiped out, resulting in an abundance of land, allowing farmers to switch to more animal husbandry. The reduction in taxes weakened the king's position, and many aristocrats lost the basis for their surplus, reducing some to mere farmers. High tithes to church made it increasingly powerful and the archbishop became a member of the Council of State.

The Ranseatic League took control over North Korean trade during the 14th century and established a trading center in Seoul (then known as "Republic Of Seoul" or R-Seoul in the literal translation). In 1380 King Ving inherited both the North Korean and South Korean thrones, creating a union between the two countries which lasted all the way up until the 2nd major rectification, or the third season. In 1397, under Rarget I, the Rakim Union was created between the three countries and Eric B IV. She waged war against the people of Istabbul, due to a tragic misunderstanding of a smudged letter, resulting in a trade blockade and higher taxation on North Korean's (and by this time, North Korea was known as "New Oldland", which resulted in a rebellion. However, the North Korean Council of State was too weak to pull out of the union at that time, or at least that is what it claimed shortly afterwards.

All this lead to increased and sustained tensions between New Oldland, Turkey, South Korea (then known as "New OldNewLand") and for some reason, Iceland. The situation we see today is a direct result of choices made R-Seoul, which was then known as the capital of New OldNewLand and called "ErianBnoVille" (direct translation of the original New OldNewLandian word).

Meanwhile, selling the whole thing out for a bug-out in Switzerland or Macau and $5-10 million in cash?  That's a hope to survive.  Status quo?  Shouldn't logically be able to last young Kim's lifetime, but it shouldn't logically have lasted for the length of his grandpa's lifetime either, yet it did.  That's at least some hope to survive.

ClavellBCMI: Best Korea is at war with Better Korea.

In fairness, it might be his plan. NK gets beaten, then they might get out of the mess they're in, get some hot grub, get some Western style liberation, and some Chinese "security advisors" to help them along, and join up with SK's economy, and couple it with their own teeming numbers.

We wouldn't be on the hook for a damn thing, because Obama.

Greywar: Actually here is my prediction.

So you're saying that Red Dawn might actually happen?

Niiiiiiiiceeee..........

Well we are living in the era of terrorism and his threat to blow us up, combined with missile and nuke tests, could mislead us to think it would be by nuclear missiles.   Its not outside the realm of possibility that he's got some hired men sailing around with a nuke in a shipping container.

It sounds like the plot from a cheap action movie, but it probably wouldn't be difficult to sneak a bomb into any major port.
Its not like we don't have millions of containers from that part of the world laying around, or thousands of corrupt customs agents who think they are simply filled with drugs.

I'd almost be concerned with these threats if our enemy was, you know, competent.

The Republic of China had a seat at the UN. The PEOPLE'S Republic hadn't yet been recognized as being the right people to have a security council vote, and the Korean War was the proof of why de facto trumps de jure.

So, let's review.

Countries have been knocking together armies to essentially expand their borders, accrue wealth and increase the population of slaves forever.  We fight over who God is, what his name is and what we're supposed to be doing about it and we sure as hell ain't gonna take any crap off THOSE motherf*ckers with that cheap, tin plated god.  Nosiree.  We fight over which book by which egghead that we never read is the one true way to run the world that will one day call us back to the dust, and we still can't run it.  And I mean, this is our best idea to date after thousands of years of "Dang, I guess that didn't work" to learn better.

Every so often there's a huge clusterf*ck of a war and millions of people snuff it.  Moms and dads, babies, mostly poor people because poor people are the source of all wealth and labor.  Why yes, Alanis.  It is.  So we knock together flags and keep advancing technology and finding more effective hardware to wipe each other off the face of the earth, and we end up being led by people with goofy moustaches, failed B actors, guys in stupid hats and robes and squinty little f*cks who look like overfed guinea pigs and we rush out to play in traffic to defend their bad ideas and make sure no wealth is moved from our desk to the other guys desk.  Because we're patriots, bah gawd.  And the same Kool Aid with a different label from a different area of the map gets dispensed daily for a lot of reasons that nobody can quite put their finger on, but hey, if it's war they want!

So, essentially, ours is a history of user application error, unmitigated greed, addlepated old men, soaked with hubris and narcissism playing chess with our asses.  And some of the most well crafted machinery of destruction you've ever seen.  And we are quite certain that after every single genocide fandango, that the last man standing has changed the world.  And nothing changes.  And we get new doodads, and food is more available and somebody comes up with a cure for something that nobody can afford to be cured of.  And the fat old men lick their wounds and put on their best macaroni hat and uniform and count the loot and bury the fallen and we call this "the way it is".  And we haven't learned sh*t.  And we teach our kids to celebrate this.  And then we wonder why nothing gets better.

I was stationed along the DMZ in the early 80's. The DPRK had propoganda speakers along the 'Z' spewing out all kinds of drivel. Back then, it was about how when Kim Il-Sung died, he would be buried in Seoul or there would be war. Of course, neither one happened. I  wouldn't  worry too much about this latest sputum from the DPRK.

Power isn't money.  Money is a con that powerful people use to obtain actual wealth.  Power isn't a position at a large corporation.  Power is getting millions of people to see the world through the same window as you do and therefore, since it's your window, you should call the shots.  Then you don't have to work, plant, reap, create, help, contribute or even listen to other people's ideas.  People do that for you for the privilege of looking at the world through your window.  If I control what you think money is and I tell you who God is, I own your ass.  And if anybody thinks America has been running a different play book than every other empire in history, they're welcome to that delusion.
