simrobert2001: SO, how long do you think the war would actually last?  A few minutes?

An hour and a half.

Infernalist: As near as I can tell, it just seems as if Un is doing his best to be aggressive enough to satiate the military class.  I can see no other reason for this lunacy.

He has to know that him and ruling class companions are going to end up hung, castrated or castrated and then hung.  And shot.  If, you know, war actually breaks out for real.

And how 'real' is this?  Are there NK divisions on the border?

There are ALWAYS NK divisions on the border.

But the North would have to be suicidal - they KNOW how badly out-gunned they are, not to mention their abysmal readiness since the Soviets stopped shipping them ammo for free. Unless they think they can sell China on it having been started by us, which is unlikely, nothing's going to happen.

Oldiron_79: My best Guess for Lil Kim hatin on Austin is Lil Kim dont like Texas because of Bush, and since Austin is the capitol of Texas to a foreigner thats never been there it must be the most Texasy part of Texas, right?

If the map above suggesting the target's Dallas is correct, then it's more likely a statement against Bush 43; he lives in the Metroplex area, and his presidential library.

Doesn't apparently care about Bush 41, else they'd be aiming at College Station.

Okay, granted, they're always in position, but there's quite a difference from being physically there, and being ready to move across the border.  Plus, they've got quite the collection of seismographic equipment to determine if there's any heavy movement into the tunnel network beneath the DMZ.

Everything I've heard about their nuclear program seems to contend that they probably don't even have a weapon capable of being put on a missile.  So I'm assuming that a tactical nuclear artillery shell is out of their league right now.  What was the range on the one we had in the 50's?  15 miles maybe?  Seoul is well out of range of that.

J. Frank Parnell: Gyrfalcon: China has already indicated they don't want Best Korea to start any kind of war, and they've told Lil' Kim to STFU and stand down already, more than once.

With all due respect, expecting China to make their true feelings and motives clear is naive.

It's entirely possible China would use NK to do things it doesn't want to openly do, but be all "oh North Korea, don't do that!" on the international stage.

War, either directly or by proxy is not in China's interests. They are as tightly wound into the global economy as anyone and anything that hurts their customers is ultimately not good for them, especially if they are seen to be belligerents.

Kim's actions may be as much about testing the new Chinese president, Xi Jinping, who only came to office this month and wants to continue the economic reforms. Not to mention the new South Korean president who came to office last month. It's probably his way of getting their attention.

I'm sorta left thinking about black swan events and the fact the intelligence agencies really screwed the pooch on the Arab Spring.

Everyone in the know says he's just posing. What if they've built a dozen ICBM's and have a grab bag of Soviet NBC toys? Our intelligence agencies haven't really been that intelligent lately.

If I were a right proper sociopath I'd figure out what sort of options to buy in case Best Korea really does do something epic stupid.

When I was in ROK, the biggest concern that was always drilled into our heads was chemical artillery rounds.  It'll be interesting one day, when this is all said and done, to find out exactly what they DO have hidden in the mountains.  I don't expect to see it in my lifetime.

Being near the border in Korea...it's surreal.  Imagine taking a drive through the mountains to visit a friend...now imagine all along the way are these innocuous traffic signs....that denote the presence of mine fields.  Now imagine every time you go through a pass in the mountains, it is larged with tall concrete pillars.....with det cord strung along the top.

It's farking bizarre.

Simultaneously 3 North Korean Sang-O submarines come to the surface, originally 6 were sent, and refueled at several points along the way by disguised refueling ships.... 4 arrived at their destinations.... trinity bay in Houston, Hudson River in New York, and off Seal beach in California.  They detonate with a average nuclear explosion strength of 4 megatons (NK nuclear test in 2009 as estimated at 2-6 megatons).  North Korea claims 3 more submarines remain, and threatens to detonate them along the united states coastlines, and announcing that 3 are in the European area.  In reality, one remains.  Total life lost is in the millions, and damage is in the hundreds of billions.

the remaining 34 in the class, several upgraded to the Sang-O II class, begin operations against united states naval vessels.  The 10 Yono class submarines are used to bring infiltrators and special ops military into South Korea.

5,000 tanks, thousands of APC's, 7,500 mortars, and 8,000+ artillery begins attacking South Korea, backed up by the 1,106,000 active duty personel.  8,200,000 reservist are called up (the largest military reserve in the world), promised South Korean land and wealth if they are victorious.

250 Mig series aircraft, 80 Harbin H-5 bombers, and another 100 strike aircraft assault south Korea airfields, and military centers.

Using nuclear weapons, nerve gas, and chemical weapons as force multipliers, its a total all out war the likes of which the planet has never seen before.

knowing the only hope of victory lies in all out fast warfare, following the Germany blitzkrieg tactics, Everything is thrown into a assault.  Mixing North Korean military targets in with South Korean forces and civilians before the United states uses nuclear weapons on their military centers. While incredibly effective the South Korean country is overwhelmed with numbers, asymmetric warfare, and the usage of weapons that are viewed by the world with horror.

Gawdzila: wantingout: Its funny that every time economic doom seems imminent, another country comes along that needs invadin'.

You don't really believe that wars help the economy, do you?  That's a really tired piece of tripe that hasn't been true for a long time.

Since we have gigantic stockpiles of weaponry and military equipment, the industries that produce those things don't need to add new jobs nor innovate new technologies just because a war breaks out.  All war means is that we spend a whole lot of money on deploying people, buying fuel for our existing war machines, and paying medical expenses for injured soldiers.  The last couple wars we fought hurt the economy immensely by sucking up well over a trillion dollars that we didn't have on something that hardly contributed one iota to the country's bottom line.  I don't know if you noticed, but the Iraq war didn't exactly catapult the economy, and the economic climate right now is on the upswing despite the fact that we just ENDED two wars.  We sure as hell don't need another one.

No, it isn't like WWII, but it does make certain segments of the economy a shiatton of money, particularly if they are given no bit contracts to do logistics at 3-4 times the cost of the military did it themselves.

I think you carried a decimal point to far in your estimation of the power of their nuke test.  2-6 KT is more likely., add to that the "MIG Series" aircraft - keep in mind that the MIG 15 (which was used where there really was a war in Korea) is a "MIG Series" aircraft.
Doubt what they use for Nuke tests would fit on a sub, while leaving room for fuel and a crew - probably kill them all with radiation before they reached the target.

Popular Opinion: vygramul: Infernalist: As near as I can tell, it just seems as if Un is doing his best to be aggressive enough to satiate the military class.

Unless they think they can sell China on it having been started by us, which is unlikely, nothing's going to happen.

the general population in north korea, living in such isolation, could be completely unaware of reality.
not unlike those that believe blowing themselves up will be rewarded with virgins in heaven, they don't have the opportunity to choose sides because they only hear one.

it sickens me that so many farkers seem to relish the idea of blowing up thousands or millions of innocent people.
those same asshats were probably bashing bush and the gulf war last week.

When I refer to "they" I mean the leadership. The poor sods who are the average Joes are less informed than Fox viewers.

sendtodave: Read somewhere that Un knows how his country is farked, but he can't do a damn thing about it, so the most viable solution is for him to lose a "war" and accept favorable terms.

Iunno, seems nuts, but an interesting take.

safetycap: Lt. Cheese Weasel: Deep Contact: Wonder what this diversion is for?

New boogy man needed.
Seal team 6 members keep dieing.
Economic meltdown coming soon.
Increased defense spending.
Distraction from expensive vacations of president and vice president.
Billions of rounds for Homeland Security. Enough to kill us 5 times.

Do you like, inject the kool aid or smoke it?

It has got to be via an enema. That is the only way the oil could be hitting the anus that quickly.

The South Korean government believes that North Korea may have as much as $6 trillion USD in rare earth elements.
Make it look good.

There was a joke in Lithuania in 91 after they got their independence the joke was that the first thing they should do was declare war with the United States. True we would bomb them for a few days but after that we would pay to fix everything!

Yeah... but this time there'd be a lot less to fix.
At least things we broke.
