(Yahoo)   Philanthropist figures out that hey, since Coca-cola seems to be able to distribute its products to every village, no matter how remote, on the African continent maybe I can convince them to take a little food and medicine on their trucks as well   (news.yahoo.com ) divider line 69

rooftop235: wildcardjack: I'm pretty sure that Coca Cola does not go out of their way to get product to each and every remote village. They make the product available to distributors who then get it out to every little village. If it was in their economic interests before you wouldn't be hearing about it.

whistleridge: for the record, when it's 120+ outside and 114 in the shade, 100+ degree Coke is...not...refreshing. But it beats hot beer or hot water

If the air is dry and you have a water supply (doesn't need to be pressurized, but potable) I could probably rig up an evaporative cooling system that would weigh next to nothing. And if bike pumps are a regular sight then I could make the kit in a few parts, mainly a tank and hose.

I was on the same thing it path. Evaporative cooling equals comfy weather and a mildly chilled coke. Also a Peltier effect cooler and a dollar panel would do nicely.

As for the program, that's cool that is being done.

/sorry for that travesty With regards to spelling on my previous post. Didn't proof read.

whistleridge: Truth.

I served in the Peace Corps, waaaaay out in the back beyond of Burkina Faso. To get to my site, you had to:

1. Fly to Burkina Faso (not easy in and of itself...I think international flights only come in every 3rd day or so).
2. Take a 9 hour bus ride out towards the eastern part of the country.
3. Get out in the middle of nowhere, and wait 2 - 8 hours for a bush taxi to come along.
4. Take an insanely crowded bush taxi another 4 hours out into the deep bush.
5. Get off in the middle of nowhere, with your bike.
6. Ride your bike 30k on trails, until you got to my village.

We had Coke. Delivered 3 times weekly. It cost $.60 per 500ml bottle. It wasn't cold (no power out there), but it was Coke. And yeah...we frequently had the delivery guys bring other stuff too.

So basically you're saying that the Coca Cola Corporation should be handling US Mail?

But how will that enhance their net profit statements per quarter?  you can't just do something useful because you rake in billions.

Lord Dimwit: scubamage: Lord Dimwit: I remember reading somewhere that the only word spoken on Earth more often than "Coca-Cola" or "Coke" is "okay". I'm not surprised, really.

Okay.

The article was trying to point out Coke's ubiquity.

Coke should put some clothes on. Nobody wants to look at that thing.

Slives: My question is why the fark did it take 20-odd years to pull this together? It should not have been that hard to get the idea out and spread around.

See! That's when you know you've had a brilliant idea. You look around and feel stupid you didn't think of it before.

It wouldn't surprise me if it lets them write off part of their distribution costs as a charitable contribution.

Okay.

Hahaha, no worries :) It's friday!

I would have thought the word most often spoken would be Hello/'ello/'allo.

Coca-cola has market competition. Their formula is a trade secret rather than a patent. Thus their maximum profit is selling as much product to as many people who want it as possible. Hence a distribution system that gets product to every corner of the planet.

The market for many 'necessities' doesn't work this way because people get this idea that these products are too important to leave to market forces. Thus they don't get distributed as well, they aren't as cheap as they could be, and are often unavailable at any price.

Does no one see the wonder?  The AWE?  Capitalism is an amazing beast.  It delivers a dehydrating drink to the deep bush, but you can't find an immodium to save your life.

I'm simply saying that capitalism - - finds a way.

stewbert: Don't take this the wrong way, but wouldn't it have been a lot easier if you'd just hopped on the back of the Coke truck?

If by 'truck' you mean 'donkey cart', then yes...I suppose I could have done that. But it would have taken a LOT longer, so why bother?

And like whislteridge said, the concept has been in use on a smaller scale for a long time.

Someone has to think of it. And sometimes ideas that seem glaringly obvious once they've been done just didn't occur to anyone for a long time.

Did this idea ever occur to YOU before just now? That a Coke delivery truck could deliver other stuff besides Coke if necessary?

He had the idea in the mid-80s.  He couldn't sell it to Coke until 5 years ago.  IDK how hard he tried; how good a salesman he is; or how indifferent Coke VPs were until they retired and were replaced by more persuadable ones.

Yes, the trucks are probably owned by independent distributors. But Coke's blessing would be required to stuff things into their crates of their products.

Chach: Cool program. Wonder when the racist eugenicists will co-opt it and start trying to send along abortifacients and contraceptives.

This was great. pro/am leaderboard for the All-Invitational  Augustus Bowl for sure. 7.89/10

Cagey B: a far candle: I have been to an African village without Coke (or Pepsi). It was on the coast of Lake Nyasa and was only accessible by canoe or a hike down a steep dirt path with a 2 km altitude difference. No road = no soda.

We've probably never heard of it.

I have, it's where the Circle of Sages is.
