Right, because we really care what comes out of her mouth.

As pretty as she is to look at, can you imagine the hew and cry that would erupt if she mispronounced a trek word and it was left in the finished film? The wailing and gnashing of Trekkie teeth would be awesome to watch.

There's a great homage to that clip in Mystery Men between Garofalo and Stiller.

J.J. Abrams made Zoe Saldana redo her Uhuru dialogue because

English isn't her first language.

That'd be Uhura, subby. Not Uhuru.

The actress...found it difficult to keep up with the film's fast-paced, snappy dialogue as English isn't her first language.
From IMDB: Zoe Saldana was born in New Jersey and raised in Queens, New York. When she was 10 years old, she and her family moved to the Dominican Republic where they would live for the next 7 years.

So she was home schooled and housebound until moving to the DR?

Listen to her say "Farragut" in the first film...

Words like "trajectory" are hardly Trek-specific.

No. But if her family only speaks Spanish and that's what she was mostly exposed to at home. Then Spanish would be considered her first language.

So the stuff she says won't make sense on purpose, not like the rest of the script.
Am i the only one who thinks that first movie was terrible?
Not Star Trek: the Undiscovered Country Terrible, but at least Star Trek: Insurrections terrible.

I've been marathon watching Star Trek shows on Hulu seeing as they have them free all month and I have to admit, they do pour on the techno-babble pretty think sometimes.

"Nooo, Zoe...it would be pronounced 'traj-ECT-ory', emphasizing the proper inflection by an Enterprise communications officer.
Mr. Abrams, you have disappointed me once again. I shall attend 'Into Darkness' only four more times."

Well... "trajectory" is something of a real word, so perhaps pronouncing it correctly should be priority.

You'll find it less annoying if you jury-rig a reverse tachyon beam through your digital converter box and then run a bypass between the chronoton emitter arrays and the aft shield generator on your flatscreen.

Sorry, but while queens is chock full of latinos, all of her education until she was 10 was in english.  There are plenty of us who are fluent in both.  Also, she has spent the majority of her life in the US.

The problem is she probably only hung out with people who spoke ghetto English.

Also, her Spanish is terrible.

I take that no one here has read Inside Star Trek, by Bob Justman and Herb Solow.

In this case Zoe is PERFECT for the role of Uhura.  Nichole Nichols absolutely could not say "Hailing frequencies open" without a mistake.

Bob Justman talked about this in the book in detail.  She flubbed the line constantly....over and over again.  And it was her most-used line of dialogue.  She constantly put an L in "frequencies", and would curse when she got it wrong....which was quite often.

"Hailing FLEEQUENCIES...oh shiat!"

Eh, Saldana is pretty and all, but she's nowhere near as hot as Nichols was. I still think the casting director should have gone with someone more able to properly fill out Uhura's miniskirt.
