(Time)   Apparently really going for that "rebel Pope" image, Pope Francis breaks Church law and washes the feet of *gasp* GIRLS on during Holy Thursday services. No word on when he's replacing the Popemobile with a Harley   (world.time.com) divider line 149

Interestingly this might be more than Pope Frankie bieng a mensch, it might signal his intent to institute a seismic change in the Church:
I The feet washing has always been restricted to men, because the Apostles were all men (Martha and Mary and Mary Magdalene apparently being chopped liver)  This is the same logic that has been used to restrict the priesthood to men (in fact, in Catholic tradition, Holy Thursday is considered the Frist Mass ever celebrated, and the moment when Jesus ordianed his Apostles as priests).  If the Pope is washing the feetof women, is it a sign he is considering opening up the priesthood to them as well?

It's not "Church Law" it's church "I'm the frickin' Pope and I shouldn't have to do that crap Law".  For 2,000 Popes have been from the uppity orders who didn't want to do that. The Vatican should just send around a media guide to press outlets entitled "Jesuits and You."

no holding my breath, but if anyone is aware fo the symbolism of that act, it has to be him.  We'll see how he resolves the thing with the US nuns first

Seriously?  They have a feet-washing rite and even that is men-only?  How many insidious little misogynistic policies are there in the Catholic Church?

The homily at the church I attend was about this last night. It's not a rule, it's just a tradition that it's only men. I find it encouraging that he's willing to break with tradition.

Having been raised in the Catholic tradition I thought the same thing. Although, not moving as quickly as some would like the church has made some progress in having female participants. I was born in the mid 80's and I remember when I was a young child many priests would not allow women at the alter at all. This meant no female readers, no female alter servers, and no females serving communion. By the time I was 8 years old this had all changed and there were women serving in all of these roles. A big part of this was because the men in my congregation were totally uninterested in doing anything besides being ushers, which basically means you get to stand in the back and screw around with your friends all mass.

Firstly, someone needs to photoshop the pope onto a motorcycle (or equivalent badass variant).
Secondly, as someone who was raised Catholic, and went to Catholic schools and had 12 years old religion class, I could not tell you anything about the Catholic Church. I could tell you about Jesus and other religions of the world, but I have no idea about most of the "teachings" and traditions of the Catholic Church.
Not sure if I'm an isolated case, or maybe I was told all about the Church but tuned it out because that stuff is boring?

Not that you care, but the vast majority of Catholics have been just as angry at Church leaders for the scandalas non-Catholics, but if you need that to feel better about your prejudices, don't let me stop you.

I basically backed out for that reason. Teenage me was less than pleased. I hadn't gone to Catholic school and we weren't exactly regular churchgoers in my family so it wasn't that big of a change, but still.

It could also be a sign that he spent the entire day doodling pictures of dragons and spaceships the day they covered this in Pope School.

Also, none of you can steal that "Pope School" idea, it's mine. I'm looking up the number for Adult Swim right now.
