We can't automatically assume BPD is doing this for noise reasons. Maybe they just hate sniveling indie rock.

Probably has more to do with the fact that these underground parties don't have permits (i.e. not paying their royalties to the city) and are selling booze that they aren't collecting taxes on (i.e. not paying their royalties to the city)

So you're saying it has nothing to do with the appearance of shutter-shades, skinny jeans, recycled 80's fashion and fixed-gear bikes?

The worst are shiny black shoes with shoelaces in them. The hierarchy ascends from there, although practically all lowcut shoes are unhip, from there on up to the boots the heads like, light, fanciful boots. English boots of the mod variety, if that is all they can get, but better something like hand-tooled Mexican boots with Caliente Dude Triple A toes on them.

It has less to do with that and more to do with the fact that music venues in the city are closing down or becoming less than receptive to anything edgier than "Train."

This was the niche which The Rat filled.  Night after night in Kenmore Square bands would line up to play assembly-line style.  If you could put together a demo and make a few phone calls then the odds were you could end up on that stage.  The Middle East took a little more work but it could be done with some time and effort.  Same with Local 186.

If you shut down places for punk bands to play they're going to be resourceful and put it together on their own.  Worcester has a decently thriving scene.  Even Springfield has something.  But in Boston the real estate got too expensive so the places closed.  In any other city that might not be a big issue.  But were talking about a city that has more colleges per square mile than any other place in the world.

I would have hoped the BPD could have recognized this but apparently not.

Boston is a shiat city for seeing live music.  Bars have closed down and been turned into discos.  Other venues get bought up and turned into high-end coffee bars or hotels.  There's nothing to complain about; the ship set sail a decade ago.

Kind of reminds me of the seventies. Lots of parties were spread word of mouth. I remember getting close to the place along Sunset Cliffs, popping out the eight track, and then rolling down the windows so we could listen to home in on it. It was kind of standard procedure in those days.

One of my friends has been doing DIY basement shows for a couple years (local/regional/national punk & metal) and has never had a problem. He always notifies the neighbors a week before the show to see if they have any issues with it, none ever have. Live music ends by Midnight. Everyone's always been respectful of his and his neighbors houses, belongings, and yards. Cops here have always ignored it. Granted Utica is no Boston.

Why should people have to

If it's about "nuisance" control, why not wait for the noise complaints to come in from the neighbors?

If you're having to stalk around Twitter and Facebook to find these parties, supposedly to quash public nuisances, instead of actually responding to reports of nuisances, is it really a nuisance?

Saying people can't meet in private dwellings to play music and socialize seems to be rubbing up against First Amendment rights to Freedom of Assembly and Speech.

Don't equate dodging zoning and permitting ordinances with breaking criminal laws. They aren't the same thing. If one of your neighbors holds a huge party with several bands and hundreds of people and it's a problem, call the cops. It's hard to justify the police spending time and money trying to preemptively stop these things.

The whole Frisco scene, with the Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, etc, started out as rent parties.  The filthy hippies would knock together some flyers and word of mouth street team marketing and throw an in house fandango and charge a few bucks to help make the rent on their now multi-million dollar old Victorians what those wacky kids thought were so trendy.  Welcome to the pre-washed, lightly scented, quiet as a mouse, no brown people, thank you world of yuppie weenieburgers who "don't want those damn kids making a racket".  Naturally, the police are dedicating lots of effort to shutting these nuisances down so as to serve the demands of the tax paying public cause, revenue.

Silverstaff: dj_bigbird: GreenAdder: We can't automatically assume BPD is doing this for noise reasons. Maybe they just hate sniveling indie rock.

Probably has more to do with the fact that these underground parties don't have permits (i.e. not paying their royalties to the city) and are selling booze that they aren't collecting taxes on (i.e. not paying their royalties to the city)

I'll never understand why many DIY promoters insist on holding events in residential quarters. It's not difficult or terribly expensive to rent a suitable event space and implement a BYOB policy. When there's no complaints, there's no cops. Problem solved.

2013-03-29 05:15:15 PM
I have seen people post a handful of the bands from that area. The predictable ones of course. Now if you take that minuscule sample and compare it to entertainment meccas like Chicago, New York and L.A, you can see my point.

Bah, kids today!  All about counterintelligence ops and comsec.  Back in my day, it didn't matter if the UCs wore an afro and groovy glad rags, they still wore Hush Puppies and smoked oregano.  So some Hippie girl named Angela would slip them a 20 of STP, then give them a roaring dose of Vietnamese clap, before dropping them off naked in the desert to talk to don Juan and shiat.

Ishkur: "no one can identify a poseur more quickly than a hipster"

By rule, all hipsters are poseurs, so no, no they can't.

Seriously!  This was the first big FAIL that I noticed in TFA...  Didn't bother to read the rest after that.

There is a big difference between indie fans and hipsters.  The only "similarity" is that hipster kids in most locales seem to have misappropriated the majority of their schtik from the snob contingent of the indie kids.  Of course, if you are neither a hipster nor an indie music fan, you might have trouble telling the two apart from a distance at first glance.

Anyway, the reason cops do this sort of thing is not because of anything to do with Ticketmaster.  Most legit shows don't go through Ticketmaster anyway; it's only certain (mostly larger) venues that have Ticketmaster contracts (or are owned by Ticketmaster). Most smaller venues use other ticket agencies, have their own box office system, or just take cash at the door.

The cops are doing this for the same reason why cops do a lot of shiat.  Because they will pick the lowest-hanging fruits whenever the opportunity is given to them,  i.e., there is very little risk involved, and it's not really labor-intensive.

As far as why people hold underground events-there are many cities in which the local officials, bigwigs, and busybodies make it extremely difficult and expensive for anyone to host small events legally. Most of underground events don't make a profit anyway; often everyone involved-the hosts, the promoters, and the bands-end up in the red. They do it for the love of what they do and to support local independent music scenes.

2013-03-29 07:06:14 PM
So let me get this straight, the cops are using the email 'Bostonbeatgang' to attempt to appear like punk rockers? Really?  I hear 'Beat gang' I think violence and random victims, not music.
