udhq: Well, if we're talking New England as a whole, you can't leave out the pride of Rhode Island and the greatest live band of all time....

better live band than this New England band?

Last I checked, assaults were on the rise and there was a (as far as I know) uncaught serial arsonist prowling the streets of Allston. Just seems like a waste of time and resources.

Gifted Many Few: To be honest, Boston, or the whole New England area is pretty sub par on the whole music scene. There have never been any historically decent bands from there. The ones that are, were usually from somewhere else and came to that area because of lack of competition.

Whaaaaaa?

Mission of Burma
The Pixies
J. Geils Band
Aerosmith
Jonathan Richman
Throwing Muses
Belly
Dinosaur Jr.
Dropkick Murphys

...and as a poster above noted, a whole host of well known hardcore and punk bands like SS Decontrol, The Freeze, Jerry's Kids, Gang Green, Verbal Assault, Neutral Nation, etc. etc.

You can argue about whether they suck or not, but there are plenty of well-known and some influential bands that came out of New England.

Slives: GreenAdder: We can't automatically assume BPD is doing this for noise reasons. Maybe they just hate sniveling indie rock.

I assume that truth behind this simply that TicketMaster is not getting their cut.

Truth has been spoken!

/I despise Hipsters but still want them to have the freedom to play without ticketmaster getting involved
//Goth events could learn from this

midigod: I think they're just trolling, keeping an obviously high profile so that their other moles have an easier time.  It must be working, because of all the venues the article says have closed.  So the cops must be finding out info from other accounts besides the ones that are "laughable."

I highly doubt it. The police do not typically display that level of competence. Which is why watching them pretend to be 'hip' is farking hilarious.

Silverstaff: dj_bigbird: GreenAdder: We can't automatically assume BPD is doing this for noise reasons. Maybe they just hate sniveling indie rock.

Probably has more to do with the fact that these underground parties don't have permits (i.e. not paying their royalties to the city) and are selling booze that they aren't collecting taxes on (i.e. not paying their royalties to the city)

Why should people have to

If it's about "nuisance" control, why not wait for the noise complaints to come in from the neighbors?

If you're having to stalk around Twitter and Facebook to find these parties, supposedly to quash public nuisances, instead of actually responding to reports of nuisances, is it really a nuisance?

Saying people can't meet in private dwellings to play music and socialize seems to be rubbing up against First Amendment rights to Freedom of Assembly and Speech.

See commerce clause.

PUH!!!
Baby-faced snitches have been infiltrating since the 90's, WAKE T.F.U.
Sometimes they come in swarms, but they'll have some handler posted out front.

Look for the plaid nerds, babyfaces or blue jackets out front asking stupid questions when you walk up.
Or they've waited all this time for YOU to walk up and ask YOU for a light.

You are on the crack or whatever the 411 is for the new drugs the kids do.

Anyone want to put up a good list:

Pre 80's J. Geils Band (and the list could stop righ here)
The Cars
Del Fuegos
Pixies
Breeders
Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Does Boston count? or Aerosmith?
Only to 2

Tell me, fellow young person and iconoclast, can you direct me to the proper venue for this evening's terpsichorean brouhaha? I'd be most grateful, as I believe it will be "cool", as we say. Thanks ever so much. Pizzeace.

In 1988 Smalltown America our impromptu field parties only got busted if we forgot to INVITE the local cops.

deadsanta: Andulamb: Um, why don't they just wait until someone calls to complain?

Um, so they can prevent a crime from happening? So they can build a case against the "promoters" and bands that gypsy from one house and neighborhood to the next, essentially ignoring all laws and ordinances so they can fleece the idiot kids who come to these "shows", then stagger out to puke on my lawn/sidewalk.

I'll never understand why many DIY promoters insist on holding events in residential quarters. It's not difficult or terribly expensive to rent a suitable event space and implement a BYOB policy. When there's no complaints, there's no cops. Problem solved.

2013-03-29 05:15:15 PM
I have seen people post a handful of the bands from that area. The predictable ones of course. Now if you take that minuscule sample and compare it to entertainment meccas like Chicago, New York and L.A, you can see my point.

Bah, kids today!  All about counterintelligence ops and comsec.  Back in my day, it didn't matter if the UCs wore an afro and groovy glad rags, they still wore Hush Puppies and smoked oregano.  So some Hippie girl named Angela would slip them a 20 of STP, then give them a roaring dose of Vietnamese clap, before dropping them off naked in the desert to talk to don Juan and shiat.

2013-03-29 05:27:20 PM
This reminds me of 70's sitcoms that would have some awful fake dialog with teenage characters wanting to go to "the rock concert." I was 10 and thought it sounded ridiculous.

Ishkur: "no one can identify a poseur more quickly than a hipster"

By rule, all hipsters are poseurs, so no, no they can't.

Seriously!  This was the first big FAIL that I noticed in TFA...  Didn't bother to read the rest after that.

There is a big difference between indie fans and hipsters.  The only "similarity" is that hipster kids in most locales seem to have misappropriated the majority of their schtik from the snob contingent of the indie kids.  Of course, if you are neither a hipster nor an indie music fan, you might have trouble telling the two apart from a distance at first glance.

Anyway, the reason cops do this sort of thing is not because of anything to do with Ticketmaster.  Most legit shows don't go through Ticketmaster anyway; it's only certain (mostly larger) venues that have Ticketmaster contracts (or are owned by Ticketmaster). Most smaller venues use other ticket agencies, have their own box office system, or just take cash at the door.

The cops are doing this for the same reason why cops do a lot of shiat.  Because they will pick the lowest-hanging fruits whenever the opportunity is given to them,  i.e., there is very little risk involved, and it's not really labor-intensive.

As far as why people hold underground events-there are many cities in which the local officials, bigwigs, and busybodies make it extremely difficult and expensive for anyone to host small events legally. Most of underground events don't make a profit anyway; often everyone involved-the hosts, the promoters, and the bands-end up in the red. They do it for the love of what they do and to support local independent music scenes.

2013-03-29 07:06:14 PM
So let me get this straight, the cops are using the email 'Bostonbeatgang' to attempt to appear like punk rockers? Really?  I hear 'Beat gang' I think violence and random victims, not music.
