"It was the second cougar shot by a resident in the last two months. A Sheridan County resident killed a 2-year-old female mountain lion that was feeding on a white-tailed deer near his property Feb. 8."

Nice, how would that guy like it if someone popped a cap in ass while he was gulping down a Big Mac.

That probably happens in the more urban areas.

The man made noise to scare off the lion, but the big cat showed no fear. The resident then shot the cat with a 9mm handgun and notified Game and Parks officials.
[...]
Officials investigated the incident a short time later and determined the physical evidence was consistent with the resident's account.

20 yards? Guy is lucky he didn't get ate. Sucks for the cat, but that's waaaay too close.

We have somewhat regular mountain lion sightings here, they usually stay out of sight but some just don't give a fark and will get bold and hide near the bike trails.  Hi Kitty! aaarrrgghgh!

Only 150 yards from his home too, and these animals can have huge territorial ranges.

It's a good thing he kept calm and didn't try to make a break for his house, that might have triggered it to give chase.

So, you're telling me you're going into this living thing's habitat who had been living here in peace for years and now because it doesn't want you in it's home, you shoot it? No different from when you people just landed here and started killing native Americans. Same story. Why was he carrying a gun anyway? Wouldn't mace have worked so this creature could live?

I call shenanigans. Everyone knows that a 9mm is only used in  weapons intended to kill people.

20 yards with a 9 MM is still a pretty good shot at a moving target. Much respect.

2013-03-29 12:12:18 PM
That's unpossible! Mountain lions don't live in Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Missouri. The Department of Agriculture, along with the Department of Wildlife says so. Don't the mountain lions know that, by law, they can't live anywhere except the mountains.

/ this is what happens when you irresponsibly limit deer hunting; an excess of mountain lions, coyotes and wolves. Since the deer go into town; so do the predators. It's only a matter of time till they start taking pets and small children.

And that's one of those "get it right the first time" shots. A 9mm sucks to be shot with, but... animals are more likely to get angry and take you out with them before they kick it off from blood loss. A 9mm round may not necessarily put one of those cats down immediately.

Male mountain lions can't make a troll.  For that you need two trolls who love each other very much.  Or perhaps just one troll who is fed after midnight.  It just depends on what kind of troll you want.

Nothing in that article tells me if he was a responsible gun owner or not. I was just reacting to the intentionally inflammatory comment.

More importantly, can two male mountain lions legally engage in catrimony?

An infant can fire a gun. Truly that makes infants a greater predator than a 300 pound lion.

2013-03-29 12:52:01 PM
The guy never says the mountain lion came towards him. When he was making noise to scare it off, did he try shooting NEAR it? I'm not a big fan of killing things that don't have to be killed, and this sounds like a case of wanting to get rid of a mountain lion by using the "It's coming right at me!" defense. Except that he doesn't say it was coming right at him.

Then again, I've never been in this situation. If there was a mountain lion 60 feet away and keeping pace with me, and I have a gun, I might very well want to shoot it before it actually approaches and leaps at my jugular. Still, I think I'd try firing at its feet first.

As a rule if a cougar doesn't avoid human contact, there's something wrong with it (e.g. rabies) and you are probably doing it a favor.

Still, the constant march of housing develops deep into the country side taking up animal habitat, rich farmland, and the like has to stop.
