Among the statements in the article is that gay people "account for half the murders in large cities."

Weird.  Violent criminals is not a stereotype I generally associate with gay people.

I suspect he won't resign, he'd have to be forced out.  Remember - the GOP isn't kidding when it comes to gays.  some members of the Republican party really do believe all the asinine things they say about women, gays and minorities.  this guy probably DOES believe all gays are immoral sinkholes of depravity.  its just something he accepts as fact.  I'll bet he's completely puzzled why he's in trouble.

I think it's close to 40%.  there are a LOT of very ignorant and asinine racist sons of biatches in the Republican party.  A lot of whom aren't afraid of warping religion in service to their political goals.

eventually the GOP is going to lock on to the idea that 'social media' means that their ENTIRE party - from top level leaders down to county commissioners - have to watch what they say or how they say it.  Because any of them at any level of the party hierarchy can find themselves front and center of the national stage without warning or review.  no second chances, no pity, and no remorse.  if they're under that level of scrutiny then they'd better be able to acquit themselves well.

Does Dave have multiple personalities or something?

Just another Republican upset with the Immoral Gay Lifestyle who want to use the Immoral Gay Lifestyle as an excuse to deny gay people the right to form moral family units. It makes 100% sense, if by sense one means utterly without meaning or reason.

Ah west side of the state Republicans, ensuring that the east side of the state moderates and Eisenhower conservatives feel an overwhelming urge to vote Democratic after every Michigan Republican primary, since forever.  Well actually it didn't used to be that bad.  The west siders used to keep their social views to themselves and just make life miserable on gays or any interracial couples that moved into their enclaves, but they've been more vocal recently.

/at least Grand Traverse purged him, in the Holland area they'd be having a parade and hailing this guy as a hero for telling it like it is

Oops, I should have read the article closer, the douche is from Grandville and the guy who is leading the purge is from Grand Traverse,  that makes a bit more sense.

1 Republican says something stupid and offensive. 21 call for him to resign and call his remarks "deplorable" and "indefensible". 1 says he has no point of view on the matter at all. I've seen a lot of speculation in this thread that Agema's repugnant attitudes represent 40%, 98%, or all conservatives or Republicans, but these are the numbers in the article. Keeping in mind the fact that loud and extreme views are more likely to be reported, I don't think we have good data on this just by watching random anecdotes about idiotic remarks.

Would anyone in this thread have any idea where actual numbers on the percentages strongly anti-gay by political party are recently? I'm betting it's been changing over tha past decade more rapidly than I would have believed when I was young.

/I know the Republican party of today is not the one of yesterday, but yes, it is possible to be extremely conservative and not be anti-gay. I'm thinking of Goldwater, but there are others from that era with similar views.

My parents are from that area (Grand Rapids and Grand Haven). I'm so glad that they got out and moved to Chicago before I was born. They were raised Republican and self-identified as conservatives for a long time, even as it slowly occurred to them that their views were actually liberal.

It's actually been pretty neat watching their views on homosexuality change over the years: They were of the generation that was told that gay people are pedophiles, so they used to warn me about Them. But my stand partner in youth orchestra was gay, and I pointed out to them that it was ridiculous to claim he was a pedophile. Well, they liked him, so he's okay...and another gay friend of mine is a sweet boy, so he's okay... oh, and that really nice lady is a lesbian, and you can really tell that she and her partner are in love... and so on until they realized that all the "Gay = Pedophile" stuff they'd been told was bullshiat. Now my dad's on Facebook posting about marriage equality...and getting a lot of flack from his sisters who stayed in Western Michigan and think we're all going to hell.

/The look on my dad's face in 2008 when his mother (born and raised in Western Michigan) said that she "didn't like the look of" Obama, and he realized that she was being straight-up racist...he was heartbroken. My grandma kicks ass in so many ways, but she has her flaws.

There's a reason a certain amount of flies and rat shiat are allowed in manufactured food. It's because, up to a point, it's no more than the amount you're exposed to just by living in a world with lots of creatures. However, once there's enough flies and rat shiat in the machinery, you gotta shut the factory down until it's all flushed out. The Republican party passed that line years ago.

I read this in total to my husband, who's a Michigan boy (Bay area) who has slowly realized over the years that "conservative" to him means "radical anarchist socialist" to actual conservatives. So your dad isn't alone. And I totally understand the heartbreak. It's devastating to discover the people you love and respect are just... *waves hands* totally WTFDerp on some issues. I'm still reeling after realizing (to my intense confusion and dismay), that my mother is a card-carrying Boomer with all the requisite idiotic opinions.
