midigod: HMS_Blinkin: Hitler was democratically elected, at one point in his career at least.

He was never democratically elected to any post or position.  He was appointed to positions of power both through friendship with Hindenburg and through threats of violence, and once he got enough power, he steamrolled over everyone, abolishing laws that would limit his own power.

Litterbox: GGracie: Litterbox: GGracie: Bomb Austin, Texas???  But all of the good BBQ!  And I have friends and family there too.  But the BBQ!  We must save the BBQ!   And the friends and family as well, of course

[artofbackpacking.com image 640x426]

Uh, Salt Lick aint BBQ.  You should get out more.

I liked Salt Lick, and Rudys and Smokey Moes, and a lot of places.  As far as getting out... I'm in Seattle now.  All the BBQ up here is soaked in liquid smoke and dry as a bone.  But I brought my own smoker with me, so I treat myself once in a while when I can actually find a brisket that still has some fat on it.  They shave the fat off the meat up here for some reason.  Ruins the meat.

Next time you're down this way, head over to Lockhart, Luling or Gonzales and you will get the real deal (Blacks, City Market etc.)  Salt Lick is aimed at tourists hoping to see Sandra Bullock (sorry Im being so critical...had a bad experience at SL years ago and its stuck with me).  You're lucky you're brave enough to try doing your own BBQ...hate to admit it scares the hell out of me and I would hate to ruin a great hunk of meat.

\Blacks forever!

Blacks is ok, but they dont hold a farking candle to Kreuz meat market and you farkING KNOW IT dontchya?!11one!   Blacks just has better dessert.  Hell Kruez has a onery old lady at the counter who is ALWAYS bitter and been there since before dirt.  Salt Lick is ok, good even for Austin quality but it juts doesnt stack up to the other BBQ shacks around Texas and its WAAAY overpriced.  But both Blacks and Kruez have better BBQ than anything in Austin.  My personal favorite is in Llano, Coopers, even though my mom got robbed there once.  If you can name a local critter then they probably have it in one of their smokers.

A damn good for Austin place btw is a new coach eatery off east 11th, Micklethwait Craft Meats, Pretty damn good.  Their slaw and potatoe salad is nothing to overlook either.  But yea if you want the best bbq in Texas, you have to leave Austin.

But I am not afraid of smoking em myself to save me a trip....

Oh hey, another Korea thread. Shocking the number of similarities I'm seeing between this and that Iraq thread from 10 years ago - "It'll be over in hours" "We'll be greeted as liberators" "Deposing dictators is what we're good at" "There won't be any unforeseen problems of any sort like the Shia/Sunni conflict in Iraq or the Pakistan-Taliban connection in Afghanistan"

Plus, we're just about to get out of a land war in Asia. Can we please not start another one just yet? It would be nice to have a brief period of peace, even just for the novelty's sake.

Dancin_In_Anson: You folks in LA, DC and Austin, Texas need to hunker down...

Wait, whut?

Samsung (South Korean company) has a huge factory complex in Austin, as well as other tech companies.  It's also possible that if they are making random guesses, NK could be a few inches off the map in either direction to take out Ft Hood in Killeen or make a play for San Antonio's military bases (Ft. Sam, Lackland AFB, Randolph AFB).

My money's on Samsung.

There aren't any parallels to Iraq here. Iraq was a colossal clusterfark that never should have happened. This situation is one of the last cold war hold-outs that should have been resolved decades ago. And we're sure as hell not going to try to occupy it. We destroy their ability to make war and kill the dear leader and let Worst Korea deal with the aftermath.

I do know exactly what I'm saying and why I feel this way. This World isn't worth saving. The banks are in a state of financial collapse. We are living the sins of our forefathers. They have depleted all of our natural resources, they are eroding every shred of freedom we have left, they are taxing us beyond our ability to pay our bills, they've corrupted any modicum of government with any integrity. Our votes are meaningless. Our governments don't care about what our needs our. They only care about their self-perpetuating bullshiat.

What's left? To sit here and become indentured servants to the governments around the World?  We have food and water shortages worldwide, the governments don't care. We are working for corrupt governments that plunder our hard earned wealth and then expect us to sit idly by only to have our wealth redistributed to people who refuse to pull their fair share and make it better for all of us. We have the wealthy getting wealthier across the globe.

JDJoeE: NobleHam: paulseta: This is a very serious escalation - Obama will find himself in a tricky situation: either take pre-emptive action based on a possibility that NK could have something which could damage US forces; or sit it out and deal with the consequences if it turned out he should have done something. Either way, a large (and different for each scenario) section of the public will have their own thoughts - no doubt.

Personally, I think Kim is hankering for a nukering.

Take pre-emptive action. The longer we wait, the more difficult this war is going to be, and I don't see North Korea going away any time soon without a war. Furthermore, if we strike first we can minimize the damage to Seoul from artillery shelling by targeting North Korea's artillery bunkers before they have a chance to fire.

North Korea's not serious about an attack right now, this is just more posturing, but we're going to have to take real action at some point. For one thing, at this point allowing a country with such a horrible human rights record and history of belligerence off the hook sets an example for other countries: get nukes and the U.S. won't fight you, no matter how much you deserve it. For another, it's just the right thing to do to topple that regime, and the indoctrination and control they have over their people is strong enough that it's not going to topple any other way.

Pity Truman didn't have the sack to finish the "conflict".  How many people have starved because of Truman?  How many more will die because he allowed this mess to happen?  How hard would it really have been for him to nuke the Chinese out of North Korea?  How many less people would be dead (or will die) had that useless dolt prosecuted Korea as an actual war?

Truman kept a disobedient MacArthur from escalating the conflict; that alone saved far more lives than have been lost.

Ike convinced the Chinese and the Russians that he was willing to use nukes on the Norks if there wasn't an armistice agreement that didn't force repatriation, but he knew goddamn well that if he became the second American president to use atomic weapons on yellow people, leaving Korea in stalemate would have looked like inspired statesmanship in contrast.

Its a reverse flow smoker.  Inside attached to the fire box is a channel that goes to the far side of the smoker.  Smoke goes through it and starts at the far end and then flows back around to the chimmeny so both sides get all the smoke over the trays as it flows around the long way.  Used it last night to smoke up two sides of pork ribs and some home made pastrami.

orclover: Litterbox: GGracie: Litterbox: GGracie: Bomb Austin, Texas???

But yea if you want the best bbq in Texas, y ...

Virtuoso80: ransack.: Virtuoso80: As someone who will admit joy thinking about the notion of the USA kicking the crap out of 'best Korea', I still am compelled to ask: Did we even try talking to these people first?

Yes, I did. They responded with what I believe to be unintelligible gibberish.

Did you ask for the Kung Pao chicken?

Yes and they only said "WAT NUMBAH?", the furthest I got from just messing around was that if I said "to" or "for" or "ate" they would ask for my "AJRESS". I never discovered what that meant. It was like playing Final Fantasy V before the fan-translated ROM.

Cer10Death: LibertyHiller: Cer10Death: I do know exactly what I'm saying and why I feel this way.

Our "leaders" refuse to learn from errors of the past. We keep repeating the same mistakes including nuclear proliferation. I say use them. Just use them and get it the fark over with. I'm tired of the Sword of Damocles. Like I said, let 'er rip. I'm ready. I think the place sucks. fark it.

I think it's time for a hard reset. This planet needs an enema. A huge Plutonium and Uranium enema.

/ and no, I'm not trolling. I really do feel this way. I'm entitled to have my opinion. I respect yours, please respect mine. I don't care if you disagree as you should care if I do with your opinion. Your mileage may vary.

I hate to say this on Good Friday, but you know what? Kill yourself. You, and the people around you, will all be better off.

Guys like you who want to watch the world burn are the embodiment of evil.

Then where are people like you when we need to be filling the streets to try to save this place? Sitting on your couch debating how crappy Miami played last night? Seems like a lot of you aren't willing to fight for it. Where are you people??? That's really my point.

Who are you calling "You people"?

Now that I have the cheap joke out of the way, I don't join any mob until I know to where it's marching. For some strange reason, I don't care for pepper spray, tear gas or being truncheoned by paramilitary forces, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Nevertheless, my original suggestion stands; you'll feel better and so will we.

Mixolydian Master: North Korean leadership has no interest in dying. This is all show. Kim Jong Un needs this pose to show his people he is not afraid of the big bad capitalist yankees, and their south korean lapdogs. I don't think he was born on a mountain with rainbows and doves crying, or hit a worl record for hols in one, on his first try at golf. This bullshiat is for internal consumption.

I'm really curious as to what his end game is here.

Is it a show of strength against China?   He can't stand up to China directly.  That could result in the Chinese responding in kind and North Korea can't risk an invasion by a superior land force, particularly without any remaining allies.  The US is a "safe" proxy because they know that the US won't likely attack because NK isn't a direct threat since NK can't deliver a missile to US soil.

Is he looking for aid?  Perhaps the deal is that if you scale back your threats and we'll send aid.  This could have been worked out back-door already.  The US (either alone or as part of a multi-national coalition) agrees to this dog and pony show.  NK postures, countries offer to send aid in return for peace, NK scales back its threats.    Aid is given and politicians can say they did it for "peace."  (Because really, you just don't need a barrack of hungry soldiers selling a warhead for a cart of turnips.)

Is he looking for business?  Is this a ploy to get the US and other countries to the table?  Kim knows that his country is falling behind and needs to move towards the 21st century.  But to open the doors for US businesses to invest in NK he needs to first get the US government to allow it.

Or we can pretend that he's not really trying to stay off a military coup, a public uprising, and three neighbors that would like nothing more than to erase his borders and be done with him.

Before that it was called Sam's I believe and while they did make an increadible batch of spicy chicken wings (not tiny buffulo but full size chicken wings) back in the 80's they were nothing extrodinary in terms of bbq.  Since Sams got bought out and I assume sold his recipe's/ect to the new (hipster?) owners they have been booming business with the new invading locals.  They are pretty good (for Austin), but cant really compete against other smoked meat distributors in Texas.

phyrkrakr: Oh hey, another Korea thread.

Why would you put your chimney on the same side as your firebox?  How does the meat at the far end get any heat?

Its a reverse flow smoker.  Inside attached to the fire box is a channel that goes to the far side of the smoker.  Smoke goes through it and starts at the far end and then flows back around to the chimmeny so both sides get all the smoke over the trays as it flows around the long way.  Used it last night to smoke up two sides of pork ribs and some home made pastrami.

Nice. Haven't seen one of those before.

Because no matter how much some people would like him to be, he's not a Dick Tracy villain.  He wants to come out of this as leader of NK which requires two things: he retain control and there be a North Korea.
