J. Frank Parnell: About as innocent as the 600,000 to 800,000 Cambodian civilians the US killed because Pol Pot was being a douche.

Considering Pot turned around and killed everybody left, I'm not sure how you go in and authenticate who died when.

Bisu: Dancin_In_Anson: You folks in LA, DC and Austin, Texas need to hunker down...

Wait, whut?

No. The NK website "estimated" that one of the trajectories ended in Austin, Texas. If you look at the image, some guy's hat is blocking the end of it. The hat starts blocking somewhere in Texas. It could just as likely be ending somewhere in Georgia or Florida.  Look at the image.

The NK must not be planning to use ballistic missiles, because those "trajectories" do not follow a great circle path. Maybe they have cruise missiles that like to plot a curvy course to match a Mercator projection of a line.

They're more advanced than I thought.

While it's perhaps not so appealing for people who need an 18" DIAMETER penis substitute, small and agile guided missile destroyers are all the rage these days.

While I do agree they have impressive fire power, there is something about the visual of those old battle ship cannons firing.

We've only fought against China in one war. Vietnam was backed by Russia, not China. It was Cambodia that was backed by China. (Which is why Vietnam and China subsequently fought a war against each other)

SlothB77: NK has no money, no allies and its military is largely incompetent. Its army is starving. They do have nukes, but those nukes can't reach the US. Most likely, they will just fall into the pacific ocean. Those nukes can reach S Korea, though.

That sounds like a recipe for instability.

North Korea is a pure example of what would happen if a religious cult ever took over a country. It's actually a bit of a sociological PhD student dream if they could possibly study the society in depth.

THAT SAID... since it is a cult-lke organization, it is entirely possible that Kim Jong-Un and his predecessors are/were politically incapable of extending any serious olive branch to the U.S. or South Korea simply because the military would then assassinate them in their sleep and replace them. Cults exist because a population has had a significant portion of it's critical though suspended. You can't simply re-implant those thinking skills and get everyone on a different thought process overnight. Countries/organizations like best korea change course much like a runaway freight-train where the conductor can do only limited things to put his train on the right track, and if he tries to do too much he'll kill himself trying. Contrast this with any democracy, which while appearing chaotic and directionless, at least has 4-wheel drive and no tracks.

The Dear Leaders are just as likely to be prisoners of North Korea as anyone else there.

LazerFish: Directly attacking the US is the best thing that could happen to NK. They'd get a whole new government from the ground up.

Seriously, ask Japan on that one.

2013-03-29 10:48:29 AM

NobleHam: paulseta: This is a very serious escalation - Obama will find himself in a tricky situation: either take pre-emptive action based on a possibility that NK could have something which could damage US forces; or sit it out and deal with the consequences if it turned out he should have done something. Either way, a large (and different for each scenario) section of the public will have their own thoughts - no doubt.

Personally, I think Kim is hankering for a nukering.

Take pre-emptive action. The longer we wait, the more difficult this war is going to be, and I don't see North Korea going away any time soon without a war. Furthermore, if we strike first we can minimize the damage to Seoul from artillery shelling by targeting North Korea's artillery bunkers before they have a chance to fire.

North Korea's not serious about an attack right now, this is just more posturing, but we're going to have to take real action at some point. For one thing, at this point allowing a country with such a horrible human rights record and history of belligerence off the hook sets an example for other countries: get nukes and the U.S. won't fight you, no matter how much you deserve it. For another, it's just the right thing to do to topple that regime, and the indoctrination and control they have over their people is strong enough that it's not going to topple any other way.

Pity Truman didn't have the sack to finish the "conflict".  How many people have starved because of Truman?  How many more will die because he allowed this mess to happen?  How hard would it really have been for him to nuke the Chinese out of North Korea?  How many less people would be dead (or will die) had that useless dolt prosecuted Korea as an actual war?

You'd think some general would love to take over and be revered himself.

NK is essentially a feudal society. Each of the generals has their own military district and literally owns everything in that district (including the people). Each general is scheming against the other generals, doesn't trust the other generals, and Little Kim stays in power by playing them all off against each other.

They must have a think tank that sits around and thinks of new things that they can threaten to do. "cut off hotline!" wait, already did that. "Threaten to nuke them" Hmmm. already did that too. "Cut off their cell phones!" oh, did that too. "load missile on the launcher!" oh, did that.. "make video!" did it. What's left? They are going to have to get creative.

Lil Kim has seen the outside world. He knows he is just a figure head at the top of a massive pyramid scheme of shiat.
Let's say  you were lil Kim an d you wanted out and you wanted to take the NK people out from under it too.
How do you do that?
Who is gonna be opposed to that?
How does he get out of it alive?

The army/elite class aren't gonna like it one bit. too afraid of peasant reprisal. They wants things like they are.
If you wanna change NK you are gonna have to somehow beat the military.
Why not get them in a fight they can't win?
After the military gets the shiat kicked out of them and the NK brainwashing about their superiority is tarnished just a bit the people might be better able to see they have been living a lie. They might be more receptive to change. If their pride is hurt and they are a bit less amped up they might be willing to see that they have been wrong. If you were in charge and wanted change, what better position to be in to get er done?

Meh, it's a theory.
