He was actually charged with using a Weapon of Mass Destruction (an RPG) against  Bashar al-Assad's regime, which carries an indefinite life sentence.

I submitted a much better article from CNN on this yesterday.

Teaming up with Al-Qaeda to overthrow a government is so 1980s

Remember when "weapon of mass destruction" meant nuclear, biological or chemical weapons?

Limped dick wannabe that voluntarily went to a war zone to fight alongside people who were previously his enemies and then turns himself in to his country after he embaresses it?

He may be a lot of things, (attention whore comes to mind) but I think limp dicked wannabe is out.

This. I've read about this a couple times in the US, where somebody is arrested with a crude homemade pipe bomb and charged similarly. Can they actually convict or is it just an attempt to throw the book at the guy so he'll plead to what he actually did.

I dont have the source in front of me, but the US law states something along the lines of anything with more than 4 ounces of explosives is to be considered a WMD.

Fighting for and funding terrorist groups is only OK when the CIA does it.

This.  Independent operators (Bernie Madoff) get reamed for doing what the big boys get rewarded for.

If you're helping anti-Assad groups, you're probably helping al-Qaedists, no matter your affiliation.

I can't wait till out empire finally falls.   Britain's fell and look at them -- no worse for the wear.  Plus, they can grouse about the 'good old days', tho most of them that would remember are dead.

I can't imagine he's not CIA or something. News articles like to talk about his odd, brash, random behavior, which to me looks like a good cover-up. I'm sure he's having fun with it too - they wouldn't pick just anyone for the job. They'd pick just the right guy.

Several ways to respond to this, but I'll take a stab:

Britain was "replaced" by the United States, which shared similar values.  I'd love to see your fantasy as to the power that would "replace" the United States that would also have similar values and wouldn't lead to a worse world in general.

Admittedly, because I want to dust off my "Let me laugh even harder" image, but hey, maybe you'll impress me.

Yup, the term has practically lost all meaning.

(1) Any explosive, incendiary, poison gas, bomb, grenade, or rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces [113 g], missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce [7 g], or mine or device similar to the above. (2) Poison gas. (3) Any weapon involving a disease organism. (4) Any weapon that is designed to release radiation at a level dangerous to human life

Harroun was charged specifically with conspiring to use a destructive device outside the US, not a weapon of mass destruction. The article writer is an idiot.

I wasn't aware that the US enforced the National Firearms Act beyond its own borders.

So the government is now admitting that the rebels possibly might be Al-Qaeda like fundamentalists that would make Syria worse off than it was under Assad if they win?

Or are they still wanting to arm these rebels, like HilDog wanted?

/We should stay out of this mess.

Why did he willingly meet with FBI agents in Turkey and then agree to fly back to the US, if he knew he was going to be charged?

And how does the US have jurisdiction to charge him?

Why was he charged with anything, instead of being killed in a drone strike?

The odd thing is that both he, and his father, were rather surprised by this, in that they both thought he was employed by the CIA.  Elsewhere it was suggested that the CIA's right hand doesn't know what its left hand is doing, and that one side authorized this, and when the YouTube video came out, the other side pulled the plug, and went into "plausible deniability" mode.

Lucy got some 'splainin to do.
