His name sounds like cymbals hitting each other.

Zildjian founded Sabian Cymbals in Canada in 1981

I thought Zildjian and Sabian were the two major brands of cymbals? Does a relative run Zildjian?

They care about quality. They do not want an ambitious factory worker trying to do work twice as fast, churning out more cymbals than usual. They wanted somebody who absolutely showed up on time every day. And they pay low enough to make sure that their employees really "want" their job. Working at Zildjian is a dream come true for some. That's their target when looking for employees.

They've found the sweet spot where they make just enough cymbals to keep customers happy but not enough that their price comes down.

For some reason this reminded me of my garage band days, and the drummer who hit cymbals so hard he tore them apart at least once a month.

Its like Puma and Adidas.  Two brothers started competing companies and both got really successful off of them.

Armand Zildjian ran the Avedis Zildjian company.  Robert Zildjian founded Sabian

Godscrack: Now he looks kinda Paiste.

A good friend of mine owned a pair of Pomeranian dogs named Zildjian and Paiste. Those dogs were straight up assholes. As much as she claimed otherwise, it was a good day when those nasty little yappers went with her exhusband.

Sorry but I to.

Former drummer myself.

Until I moved on to guitar and keyboards.

The Zildjian legacy is one of the most interesting stories in history. It starts in the early 1600s. Full of mystery, magic, betrayal, spies.

Fun fact: The brand SABIAN was invented by combining the first two letters from the names of Robert Zildijians' chilfren: Sally, Billy, Andy.

Had the same experience with a drummer as well.

We lived in Massachusetts and he got the bright idea to drive to the factory to return his broken cymbals.

I was shocked when the next day at rehearsals he had brand new ones.  I think they even upgraded him as well and told him not to hit so damned hard.  They held together though.

Major props for being good guys and helping out a bunch of local music rats.

Alas his great ride has ended with a crash.

I'll tip my high hat to him as he rides into the sunset. I just hope he doesn't make a splash in the afterlife.

/Really people? There are more types of cymbals than a crash.

say what you will about him; he showed a lot of brass.

I cracked a 17" Sabian AA Rock Crash. Sent it to Sabian with no real hope of anything happening. They sent me a new one. For free. Yep. Are their better, more melodic cymbals out there? Sure. But for my money, much like Pearl, Sabian is TOPS with their customers, pro and amateur alike.

The name Zildjian is synonymous with cymbal-making.

No, that's literally what it means.

He proved that his company was not just a flash in the pang; for a long time, the value of Sabian cymbals just couldn't be B8.

There won't be a dry ride in the house when he's eulogized.

Rocktagon.

How do you know the drum riser is level?

Drool is running out of both sides of the drummer's mouth.

good_2_go: Rick Mercer visits Sabian

One of the most incredible things about Sabian is that they'll make a custom cymbal for anyone, as long as the request is possible with their standard tooling and materials.

A. Zildjian & Co. won't answer your calls until you've been on the cover of Modern Drummer at least twice.
