Wait, he paid for a 360 degree view of the city skyline. Isn't the top of the neighboring building part of the skyline?

He should be thrown off the building.

So all all buildings being built near this entitled farkstick must not be taller than his penthouse?  And he thinks he should be allowed to dictate that??

Check it out on google or apple maps.  This won't be blocking his view of skyscrapers.  It will block his view of...New Jersey.  In his hooker pad.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: Couldn't he buy the building himself? I've heard of homeowners doing that in neighborhoods.

That was my thought as well.

The problem seems to be that the elevator is already built and has a variance that allows it 40 extra feel. Even buying the building doesn't necessarily mean he is going to be able to get the permits to tear down the elevator.

It is harm, and possibly irreparable at that.

GoldSpider: So all all buildings being built near this entitled farkstick must not be taller than his penthouse?  And he thinks he should be allowed to dictate that??

No, I'm saying that the skyline is defined by the buildings you can see from your current location.  By definition you can't block the skyline with another building, because the other building is PART of the the skyline.  It would be like saying that a tree at the edge of the forest is blocking your view of the forest.

That thought popped into my head, and then I thought "but wait, I'm not a massive blubbering vagina that whines about everything despite living with several silver spoons in every orifice."  Once you consider that point of view, his vantage point becomes much more sympathetic.

Day one of nuisance law: if you buy a property for the view, you better buy the view as well.

He might have a case on the zoning regs (and that "permanent and irreparable harm" bit is what you have to spew at the court to get them to actually issue an injunction against a project rather that allowing it to go ahead while te issue's being litigated and have them pay compensation later if it's found to cause damage.) But damn, what an asshole.

There was A LOT left out, I always tell people that the movie is the beginning, middle, and end of the book.  Also they did a better job at explaining the ending of the book than with the movie.  Admittedly though, it's a bit darker sometimes than most people are comfortable with.

Why is the elevator shaft 42 feet taller than the building? Does it house the machinery or something?

morg: Why is the elevator shaft 42 feet taller than the building? Does it house the machinery or something?

Even if the top of the shaft housed the utilities for the elevator, 42 feet seems excessive. I used to design 160 foot tall feed mills that had a service elevator in them the entire height and the utility room at the top was only 5'-6" tall for everything. So, 42 feet taller seems like they were going for having the tallest building in the area type of claim without actually having the tallest building in the area...

Yeah, this.

I mean, technically the law is on his side...but do the 1% not understand that it is not their money that causes the rest of us issues with them, it is this smug and entitled attitude we find so intolerable?

BE rich. HAVE lots of money. Hell, enjoy the shiat out of it. But for F*CK'S sake, don't go pulling this kind of crap and whining that your view from the top of your diamond-encrusted tower is blocked by that golden tower over there, because we're just not going to be sympathetic.

morg: Why is the elevator shaft 42 feet taller than the building? Does it house the machinery or something?

Elevators usually need an over-run of one floor plus a bit, so they can be hoisted up and serviced. There's often an elevator room on top of the building where they house the pulleys and machinery and can pull the whole elevator out for repairs and servicing. Higher buildings have larger elevator rooms.
