They're not umlauts, just dots. We're simple folk with a simple language

Finnish is the most orthographically-perfect language in the world, supposedly.  One letter, one sound, no real variation (although unstressed vowels might have slightly different qualities than stressed ones).

Simple?  Hah!  Agglutinative languages are a biatch for English speakers.  And try explaining asteviahtelu to a non-linguist!  (Wish I'd studied linguistics before I lived in Finland.)
