"Patrick filed a bill seeking to raise the income tax from 5.25 percent to 6.25 percent and to lower the sales tax from 6.25 percent to 4.5 percent. "

I want my easily calculable 5% back, thankyouverymuch.

Jon Hamm get elected governor of Massachusetts?

As a resident of Massachusetts I fully support the Governor's plan. I do not mind paying an extra 1% on my income to further improve the education in this state. We are already at or near the top, depending on the study, and I wish to make it better. And reducing the sales tax will help relieve the burden on the lower incomes, as they pay more of a percentage of their income tot he sales tax than I do.

Cancel the Fall River railroad. I just saved you one year of the tax increase plus $50 million per year forever.

It seems like there is just no political will to invest in society anymore.  Not only is nothing new getting done, we have to watch what our ancestor's built decay and crumble.  I'm actually excited about the plan to reopen the commuter rails.  Not only because I think it makes sense for Massachusetts's high population density.  But it gives me hope that society can still move forward instead of just atrophy.

What would make the most sense (and I'm sad they've never done this) would be to connect North and South station and have one continuous rail line from Maine to D.C.

But the South Coast commuter rail makes sense (UMD students can take day trips to Boston) and has been a possibility since the 60s

It already exists, but it would need to be repaired and upgraded before it could sustain full time use...

well that's mostly a freight line anyway. I was thinking a strict passenger line like the subway that runs through Boston anyway

North South Rail Link is a several billion dollar project. Can you justify that cost? The per-person per-trip capital cost would be significantly higher than the Big Dig, which was probably a bad investment.

If you can get over 200,000 riders per day on the rail link the figures are much more favorable. That exceeds current total MBTA commuter rail use.  (Unless the reported ~130,000 figure is for round trips; then it is comparable to current total commuter rail use.)

Maybe if the Governor's tax plan didn't close "loopholes" like being able to deduct tuition, have emergency medical accounts, etc., this wouldn't be an issue. But then he wouldn't have the money. The MA house and senate will not pass this. It's a moot point.

/ignoring the fact the the governor's obsession with charter schools blows
//"innovation" schools too

Yeah, why would the people of the South Coast need a cheap, efficient way to get to the capital, right?

It's not like any of us work in Boston and have to commute, further congesting 24 and 93.
