Damn, people just started the game, and idiots have to publish stories like this? No spoilers please in this thread.

Ahhh! I'm so close to the ending, yet so far at the same time! Can't read this article yet.

And I'm not going to post spoilers, but the only thing I will say is Elizabeth rocks! One of the best companions I've ever had in a game.

It's a little soon for that isn't it? I just figured out how to increase my texture buffer (they call it a pool for some damn reason) to get the game to stop stuttering while loading HD textures.

Care to share? The game runs pretty well most of the time but I notice some nasty little slowdowns in certain areas.

It is a helluva game, though.

It's one of those where you want to run through and find out the story, but at the same time, there are all of these little side events (like the kinescopes) that you also want to look at.

I don't know what the hell they were thinking with Bioshock Infinite.  Why the hell would you make an e-Sport without a multiplayer mode?  The Koreans are never going to take this game seriously as an e-Sport.  e-Sports.  e-Sports e-Sports e-Sports.

You are going to have to do a little searching I'm on my work PC and I can't remember the exact path but,
go-to  my documents/my games/bioshock infinite/xgame/engine.ini then to a ctrl + F and look for 'poolsize' and you should find something that looks like;

[TEXTURE STREAMING]
poolsize=400

I doubled it to 800. It seems that the issue is the speed of the HDD it's installed on not loading textures fast enough. Also update your video drivers as there are new drivers out for bioshock.

After doing both of these steps I'm running smooth as glass in Ultra and damn if the game doesn't look good.

About two hours in. This is most certainly not a bookmark for much later.

I can't believe i spent a full hour in a FPS not shooting anything. The fact that that's not a complaint is a testament to just how beautiful the world they've built is.

Then they handed me a baseball, and things got real ugly real fast.

Take Two can go fark themselves. I paid $60 for the original Bioshock and never got to play it because the SecuROM on it unloaded my mouse driver every time the computer booted after the first install. First the customer service guy accused me of having a pirated copy, then when I pointed out it had successfully activated over the internet he told me I had to use a different mouse and that I should just switch back and forth between my gaming mouse for WoW and a regular one for Bioshock.

So.. yea... they can still go fark themselves. Haven't bought a thing they've released since, won't be buying this, won't be buying anything in the future from them.

2013-03-28 11:08:48 AM
Oh, and then when I uninstalled Bioshock it didn't uninstall SecuROM anyway so the mouse still didn't work. I had to roll back Windows to a prior state.

Farking virus makers as far as I'm concerned.

Haven't played the game, but I did read the article.  I won't post spoilers here.  All I have to say is...does no one read science fiction any more?  I mean, it sounds like it was a pretty decent sci-fi story and all, but when reviewers like this guy break out the breathless prose making it sound like this is the greatest thing ever, it makes me raise my eyebrows just a bit.  These aren't new ideas.  Kudos to the game for telling the story well, but let's not act like this isn't a well-worn path.

Oh, well, whatever.  I don't actually care.

I went crazy and DID finish the game already- and I gotta say, if you don't want spoilers, mayhap you shouldn't click on the link/thread about discussing the ENDING.

I thought the ending was fantastic, beautiful, crazy, depressing, and disappointing all at the same time.

But I guess the thought police means that I'm not allowed to tell you why.

In the overall realm of science fiction, no, it's not the greatest thing ever. However, video games these days RARELY get good stories and I honestly cannot recall the last time one was this fantastic. The video game as an art medium is seriously underused and when something like Bioshock Infinite comes along people really take notice. For those of us who appreciate good, thought-provoking games (NOT looking at you, CoD), this game is a rare gem. It reminds me why I liked video games in the first place when I was young, why I've become so jaded with them in general the last decade or so. Bioshock Infinite and games like it give credibility to video games as a true art form.

2013-03-28 11:33:13 AM
I am not yet done with the game, although I'm darned close (I think).  I will say it has the best narrative of any video game ever.  And the game play is excellent.  And the music simply amazing.  And the game is beautiful.  And Elizabeth is the most fleshed out character in any video game ever.  As an overall experience, it's the best video game I've ever played.  It's like the best sci-fi movie ever possible, except with a budget of a couple billion dollars, with intelligent writers, but you control the pace, and get to shoot things and set them on fire from time to time.

I understand your point, but you have missed out on a great game. I had a similar problem with a Logitec joystick years ago (the drivers farked my machine so bad I ended up reinstalling the OS) and it took over 10 years before I would consider anything from them.

Lamadin: However, video games these days RARELY get good stories and I honestly cannot recall the last time one was this fantastic.

I've seen some people complain that the level of technical storytelling isn't all that great in retrospect, which, to a degree is accurate. At the end you've got all the pieces to make a pretty robust explanation of everything that has transpired, and the plot does boil down significantly.

Something I haven't seen anyone discuss yet, and what might be far more interesting than the simple mechanics of what happened, is what the essential moral of the story is. I felt the ending was depressing in part because it felt like the game that built itself up as so much of a morality play didn't ever really take a stand on morality. But, maybe it did, but that meaning isn't lurking at the surface.

I will say this, because I gotta say it to someone. This might be a SPOILER in the vaguest possible sense:

I was disappointed because at the end of the game I didn't see a clear path to redemption for Booker. It seems like, for a game so much about Christianity, that Booker becomes damaged goods at Wounded Knee: he becomes a sinner, and then it's literally impossible for him to redeem himself, no matter what he does from that point forward. For a game that seems to want to say something about religion, they missed the absolutely critical aspect of Christianity, which is the possibility of redemption, and in doing so the religion in the game seems much more like a straw man or caricature of religion than something meaningful. It reduces the narrative from, "This is a commentary of Christianity." to "Comstock is a crazy man who made up his own cult and these events have no bearing on reality."

Fubini: I was disappointed because at the end of the game I didn't see a clear path to redemption for Booker.

Ah, but the scene at the VERY end, after the credits role, leaves that issue up to the viewer. Or maybe the entire point of the game is that sometimes there IS no redemption, no matter your faith.

There was a story about one of the programmers almost quitting because he didn't agree with the way that Christianity (himself a Christian) was portrayed. Ken Levine talked him into staying, but it's possible that he was so angry was because of the lack of redemption, a tenant that goes against most religions.

Anyone know which console version is better? I've got both a PS3 and an Xbox. I know for the original Bioshock the textures and water effects were better on the Xbox. Any difference between the two that anyone has heard of?

They are probably pretty similar. The controller will probably impact your gameplay more than minor differences in graphics. Your best bet is to go with the system with the controller that is better suited for an FPS (xbox IMO) .

He almost quit because of how badly the religious themes were initially handled, according to Levine.   Levine worked with the programmer to make the game's religion more realistic and feels the game is much better due to the input.

It reminds me of Clive Barker's Undying (although not as spooky, not in the same way) which was one of my favorites back in the day. Lots of cool backdrops and sets. The fact that I didn't jump right into a blood bath when I started the game was nice, too. Gives you time to feel the game out and get a taste of its story.

If you like Undying, Thief, Omikron, etc... yule like this.

I'm liking the shock jockey vigor with the storm hat and the increased critical damage item (not sure which slot). The shock jockey stands them up for a nice head shot which kills them and makes the effect spread to nearby enemies who in turn get headshots (usually from a carbine) and spread the effect further.
