I haven't been able to watch the Simpsons for a few years now. It is a shadow of what it once was, but it's still better than most shows on TV now.

RIP DON "EXCRUCIATING" PAYNE.

"He was 48 and had bone cancer" is not always necessarily exclusive with "death by cancer".

My Grandfather had a long battle with colon cancer. Ended up shooting himself because of the pain. This is always a possibility. I dont blame them if they want to end the pain.

"My only regret is that I have... Boneitis."

Per TFA, he also worked on the Thor screenplay. It was not a "quality film", but it was quite entertaining and fun.

Also, directed by Kenneth *f*cking* Branagh, and with Anthony *fava beans and a nice Chianti* Hopkins as Odin.

Don Payne, an award-winning writer and producer of and screenwriter of the 2011 blockbusteras well as "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles, said his friend and former writing partner John Frink. He was 48 and had bone cancer.

This is 2013. It's a shame they are using such euphemisms instead of coming out and calling John his husband.

I'm truly sorry he's dead, but all three of those movies really, really sucked

Well, just since 2007.

Ya know, I bet the death rate in the Simpsons cadre has been lower than average for a group that sized in the past 24 years.

You may want to dial your passion back just a smidgen because you're failing to see the obvious.

FTFA:  Payne is survived by his wife, Julie; their sons, Nathaniel and Joshua; their daughter, Lila; his mother, Barbara Payne; a brother,, and a sister, Suzanne Fanning.

Although 48 is much too young to die, he leaves a legacy of laughter to millions around the world. That's an accomplishment that few can claim. Goodnight, funny man.

/I will turn 48 in less than a week

Actually the last few seasons have been pretty solid. Not like Homer Goes to College awesome, but still a pretty good TV comedy. The one where the hipsters move into Springfield was awesome, the one where Grandpa was revealed to be an old time wrestler was really funny, and the one with the story of Homer's childhood dog was a really good story.

Wow I had not heard that. I did know that the guy makes something like 10 million a year from the Simpsons, even though he hasn't been involved with it at all since season 4.

Sue me, but I also kind of like another movie he directed, "My Super Ex-Girlfriend."  It's not really objectively good, but it's for some reason kind of Saturday afternoon cable fun.

eh, I'd put it maybe on par with season 10 or 12 in terms of consistency. It has its moments, and I did like the one with Grandpa being a wrestler, but the show still has quite a few issues, especially with pacing; when the show is bad, it can be rather dire as well.("Politically Inept..." has to be one of the lowest points of the show. Satire that was way too late, Ted Nugent clearly not being in on the joke, and just generally unfunny.)

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure he suffered immensely.  Bone cancer's a biatch like that, ya know.  Most just usually end their lives before things get too painful, but I'm sure he clung to as much life as he could, for as long as he could, just to make sure that you could feel that he was truly punished for writing a movie you didn't happen to enjoy.

FTA: ...as well as "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,"

And nothing of value was lost.
Also, there was a typo in "Insane Clown Poppy", I guess now we'll never get the needed closure on the story of Krusty and his estranged daughter.

2013-03-28 11:28:29 AM
though I initially didn't feel too sad for a latter-day writer/producer dying, I now feel kind of sad that everyone else in this thread has the same outlook.
