you forgot to add that the study was conducted by the noshiatsherlock institute for the blindingly obvious.

1/3rd of them lived with their parents, FTFA

So yeah... there's that... at least their parents don't need to shove a febreeze tampon up each of their nostrils to co-exist with those losers.

Uh, yeah. The ones being found are the ones getting caught because they're dumbasses who think they're l33t but are actually playing with fire. The real hackers are making millions in organized crime, working for cyberwarfare corps or 3 letter agency, or maybe working for an info sec company.

The problem that they faced is that they weren't able to convert their technical competence into financial profit," said Dupont, who studies cyber-invaders from Canada, the United States and England, and found a similar profile.

dude just don't understand cryptanarchy

What a stupid study. 'Hackers' without social skills aren't hackers. If they're not proficient at social engineering, they're just wannabes.

Then again, when your base cases are idiots who run large-scale DDOS's for the lulz and attention - garbage in, garbage out.

I think the correct term for these are "script kiddies."

FTFA: "The typical hacker is male, in his 20s, and is usually socially immature. Many have criminal records for non-digital crimes such as drug dealing and uttering threats."

Reality: "The typical hacker habitual criminal is male, in his 20s, and is usually socially immature. Many have criminal records for non-digital multiple small-time offenses crimes such as drug dealing and uttering threats."

This has been known for a very long time about habitual criminals, or "at-risk" men (to use the politically correct term). All the study revealed is that "hackers" really are no different from most low-lives, perhaps excepting how often they are living with their parents. If I'm bored enough later, I'll look up the study and see what else was wrong with it other than the itsy-bitsy sample size of 10. ("Itsy-bitsy" is a criminalogical and epidemiological technical term, honestly. It refers to studies that are better than "pulled out of your ass" but not as good as "crappy".)

God I wish the authors of that study would read your post.  But the lead is a professor in Montreal, speaks French and will probably not admit to himself that he understands English.

1/3 of computer hackers between the age of 17-27 live with their parents.

That's a meaningless statistic unless we know the proportion of 17-27 year olds in the general population that live with their parents.

Correction subby, studies of "hackers" caught or as they are more commonly referred to, script kiddies.

This.  Hacking is what white or Asian boys take up instead of basketball as a backdoor path to wealth.

A sample size of ten is what passes for social science these days?

Don't get me wrong; the stereotype was not born in a vacuum. But can't the people studying these things do better than ten people?

Especially since you have 17-18 year olds in the sample, who are still in high school. There's 20% right there. Now you simply need another 13%.

Or they can say 1/3 of folks ages 15 years, nine months- 27 live with their parents.
