Then there was stuff to give even Freud nightmares: Link (NSFW)

I don't suppose I don't need to go on with the stuff Catullus, Martial, Juvenal and Apuleius was writing...

Wait, people drank out of a bowl with a giant cock sticking out of it?

...I want to party with these people.

Romans were all like "Cocks are awesome! Let's put em everywhere!"

I think this is where the early Christians developed a fear of genitalia from the cock-crazed Romans.

Christianity is a slave religion. first popular among Roman slaves. If you developed a religion under those circumstances, wouldn't you try to forbid as much of the behavior of the slaving class as you could in order "to make a better world?"

Pretty much. There are people in the comments there saying the eruption was god punishing them for their hedonism.

God hadn't been invented yet in 79 Anno Domini   Let's not get ahead of our theology.

Snerk

/I love the Romans, they accused their politicians of bestiality and incest like we accuse ours of lying, that should give ya a insight to their character
/I also find it funny that they considered homosexuality ok as long as you were the pitcher, but being the catcher was just beyond the pale...

Oh, and as long as it was with the right kind of person. Emperor Hadrian was excoriated for his habit of playing with little boys...but I guess adult men were acceptable IF you were on top.

(and nobody called it 79 AD until much later you silly person. That didn't get started till the Venerable Bede)

I thought you were cracking wise visit the no God in 79 AD but if you were being serious there are several Roman records surviving from that time showing that Christian cultists were already causing them grief, Heck Nero blamed the great fire of Rome on Christians in 64AD

This country used to be great, before Congress was given the powers of taxation by the Constitution and True Patriots were fighting the British! This period lasted from roughly 1775 to 1789.

Amazing how people who weren't alive at that time, mostly Libertarians and Sovereign citizens, see this period as some kind of golden era.  I guess the part where only white males had any rights is what really appeals to them.

Didn't seem to happen with those former freed slaves in the U.S.

You don't think black American culture (at a high, general level) rejects white American culture in some ways? Also, it was over 300 years between the time of Jesus and the time of Constantine. It's only been 150 since the slaves were freed. And they had no inspirational figure like Jesus during their enslavement, either.
