Now your kids with your loud music, and your Dan Fogleberg, your Zima, hula hoops and pac-man video games, don't you see? People today have attention spans that can only be measured in nanoseconds!

Obviously, video games are responsible.

Wait.

Maybe it's jackass that's responsible.

Hand sanitizer is mostly ethanol, not sure if that counts as poison.

My older brother told me about this one kid who put LSD in his shop teacher's coffee.  Apparently he went insane in class and started screaming and running around the room like a madman.  I had that teacher almost 20 years later, and frankly the guy deserved it, as he was a complete dick.  He was fired a few years after I left for assaulting a student.

At my junior high a couple of kids got carted off by the cops for putting bleach in the vice principal's coffee. At least that was the rumor going around as almost the entire ninth-grade class watched them being walked, in handcuffs, across the ninth-grade lawn at lunchtime.

/You can see the front of the school (Walter Reed Jr High -- now "Middle School"), and the ninth-grade lawn, on certain episodes of "Seventh Heaven".

It sounds innocent enough, but over time, real damage can result.  This is why rehabs often do not have hand sanitizer.  Some idiots have taken the pouches out of the dispensers and consumed the stuff and eventually end up in the hospital for stuff like renal failure.

In my day all the teachers drank, so anti-freeze wouldn't work.

Okay so the article says that the kids were doing this for months which leads me to think that the teacher had to have drunk something containing hand sanitizer. That leads me to wonder just what the fark that teacher was drinking that they couldn't tell it had hand sanitizer in it.

I did something very similar when I was in 7th grade.  It resulted in a 3 day suspension.  I can't believe these kids were expelled, and are facing juvie.

I've read where kids are drinking hand sanitizer to get drunk. They do something to it to make it a bit more liquid.

Ethanol, from what I was always told, is poisonous and, on the TV series about Moonshiners, the first run is Ethanol, which they throw away. (I didn't know making corn whisky produced ethanol at first.)

Now, I knew a lab tech, who was a sheer genius at his job -- and also a hopeless alcoholic -- who stated you can drink a certain amount of Ethanol (he had) without any ill effects. He had drunk rubbing alcohol. Then again, I knew hard core drunks who drank sterno and survived.

I figure the kids, not being the brightest bulbs in the lamp, were actually just trying to get the teacher drunk and not actually poison her. By the time it got to the news, as things will, it had turned into felony poisoning, which sells more papers.

We are all familiar with FOX news blowing headlines out of proportion anyhow.

Besides, these days, teachers should be aware to NEVER leave anything they consume open or within easy reach of students. It's not like it was 40 years ago.

Back in the late 60's, students in one of my classes kept giving the teacher oranges injected nearly to bursting with Vodka. She caught on real fast, thanked them for the treat and took them home after school to share with her husband, who was also a teacher there. The guys who did it were deliberately not very secretive about it, because they liked the teacher.

I also knew a girl who came to school every day with a milkshake in a thermos. Found out later, it was made with Vodka.

So, I figure the kids weren't trying to actually poison her. Just get her blitzed -- probably after finding out about kids drinking hand sanitizer on YouTube or something.

I had a room mate once, who really boozed it up. That's how I learned that most of those flavorings you buy for cookies and cake are actually made with a considerable amount of alcohol. I also discovered that my mouthwash was made with a hefty dose.

I discovered this after he drank them all.

At least he didn't drink sterno.

If you're going to poison, look around your home for things that are more effective.  Cleaning supplies not meant for human contact is a great start.  Antifreeze apparently tastes great, cheap, don't need id to buy and can be stored in a thermos.  Another idea is chlorine.  This time of year it's being sold in stores in the swimming pool section.  It's a bit smelly, but if ingested would cause damage.

But hand sanatizer.  That's not even trying.

This is why I don't continue drinking my drink, despite it being re-sealed, if the kids have been moving around the classroom and I've been up and doing something else. Also why I have locks on my backpack and lunch....

Kids are farking brutal, they will do stupid things to get back at you. I saw one purposefully sneezing on a paper they were turning in once, another wiping their nose and then touching the paper (quite purposefully, mind you.... most of them just wipe their noses and continue their work, but this one was pretty obvious)

Damn sick kids.

They shifted to the hand sanitizer only after they failed with, pecans, pistachios, pine nuts, coconuts, fennel, walnuts, sesame and poppy seeds, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, fruits, vegetables, maize, spices, synthetic and natural colors, rice, red wine, bee venom, and cat dander. Police say their cunning plan failed to elicit the desired effect because the victims didn't know they were being exposed to the "poisons. "

I'm not a sciency-understanding dood, but how much hand sanitizer would a person have to consume per day, before the cumulative effects killed them?  To call this a "poisoning" seems a bit much.

Nope. Ethanol is the good stuff. Methanol is the bad. It comes out of the still first because it boils at a lower temp than ethanol.
