Am I the only one who thinks it's kind of cool how lots of the trees in the landslide area are still standing? Like pulling a tablecloth off the table without knocking over the lamp?

"Not clear what caused the slide..."Normally it is water and clearcutting (to improve the view).  It is why passenger train service is out N of Seattle 10% of the winter -- mudslides in Mukilteo and Edmonds.  But it has been reasonably dry here for several weeks. This is a massive earth movement on the W side of Whidbey Island, N of the town of Greenbank.  I think that most of this land is glacial deposit, which often has rock/sand moving across sheets of clay on the way down the hill.

Can't be both, the guy on the streetcorner in the crunchy pants who was telling me gay marriage was an abomination also said gravity was just a theory, like evolution...  Last I saw him, he was lying in the gutter and peeing on himself, but I'm sure he made it to the international astrophysicist conference right after that.

So he couldn't possibly be wrong!  We have to come up with some different theories.

BEER_ME_in_CT: Look like theres one homeowner who won the beachfront upgrade from mother nature.

"Beachfront" on Whidbey is a very particular definition. As most of the island is cliffs near the water,
"ocean view" and "ocean front" often mean you are 100' or more above the high tide mark. To be "Beachfront" or "Water front" you have to have less than 10' of elevation (it might even be 4') between you and extreme high tide. Needless to say, beachfront properties go for the highest prices, if you can find one for sale, and often come with occasional saltwater in the crawl space.

Also,  the only reason we have access fees up here is because righties are too cheap to fund public land because socialism.

There's a reason bluffs are shaped the way they are shaped. You don't want to own property at either the top OR the bottom.

being someone who lives on Whidbey Island and is NOT rich I can tell you just why these landslides happen. people get stupid with their property and remove the firs and maples that grow on the burms and banks that keep the soil in place. Then like it does in washington it rains for days on end, over saturating the ground and then you get this. These homes I can tell you are at a minimum 1 million dollars or more. I actually know one of the dudes whose house was spared by exactly 1 house down from the mudslide. I am not surprised at all this happens.

FARK Whidbey Island Theme Park entrance requirements:

1. Hand over your wallet, bank account #'s and any weapons. These are evil remnants of your previous life as an unwashed capitalistic pig agent of the Bush Devil.
2. Abandon any hope of making money.  The park will provide for your every need.
3. Bundle.  There is only ONE bundle for information, TV and phone. (tapped, because you cannot ever be trusted. It's for your own safety)
4. Any home without the proper Hammer/Sycle flag flying will be burned to the ground in the name of preserving the serenity of the others.
5. You must burn Old Glory once a week to remain a member in good standing with the HOA.
6. Inspections of premises can occur at any time without warrant. Any home WITHOUT images of Che, Hugo Chavez  or Lenin will be duly noted and subject to re-indoctrination processes.

Assessor has been the usual f*ck you pay me and the insurance is priced out from what they can afford. To stable the slope would be hundreds of thousands and probably wouldn't be 100% against future slides. His wife inherited the place from her grandfather so it's basically their fault for not selling the place years ago when the market was hot.

A lot of the soil up here is effectively sand. When I lived in Magnolia and the outflow pipe (clay) collapsed, the plumbers had to build a trench out of sheets of plywood to get to it, because the sandy soil just kept collapsing on them. They ended up just filling in the hole with the wood in there.

Deception Pass is quite a ride of a sailboat. Depending on the time of the day, currents typically reach 7 knots

Depending on the time and location, it can put up pretty sweet standing waves for brave kayakers.

Yep. Deception Pass is incredibly beautiful.

But you pretty much need to bring a headset.

Godscrack: Those poor poor rich people.

Bullshiat. Rich my ass. They're taxed into oblivion there. My sister lives just a few miles from this event and I guarantee you most folks are far from what you or I would call rich. Would you define an eleven dollar an hour job as wealthy?

Have I told you lately what the queers are doing to the soil?  THIS IS PART OF THE PLAN!!!!1!

So what are you saying?
That the dude in the yard is gay, and that the gays got together and did something to the soil to cause the landslide to give their gay dude friend a great ocean front property?

No wonder they won't pass a gay marriage ok thingy.
They are afraid of their secret powers and don't want them to reproduce more that might be even more powerful.

So, Whidbey is sloughing off, falling to pieces collapsing into a pile of wet, mucky ooze.

So what else is new?

2013-03-27 09:09:06 PM
My inlaws live on whidbey island, near a bluff...so I'm getting a kick out of these comments.

/the north end of whidbey is far from "rich"....it's a mix of crotchety old people and military families....and the goddamn Dutch.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Medic Zero: Lt. Cheese Weasel: Whidbey Island?  Sounds like a Fark socialist trollers paradise.

That's funny, I always figured it was full of active and retired military, and the kind of rich jerks that don't contribute.

The view I get of Lake Sammamish, and the Cascades is priceless.

But I stay away from the bluffs, hate to see an investment slide away.

My first wife was born there.  Navy brat, when I married her I figured she'd be used to deployments.

When I came back there was another dude living in my house.  That's why she's my FIRST wife, not my WIFE.

My father grew up on Whidbey, way back in the day. As others have noted, it's a real mix of types, with the military around Oak Harbor, the farmers (yes, there are still farms there) the almost hippie-ish tourist-industry in the towns of Coupeville and Langley, and the rich Seattlites. And yes, if you're ever in the area, check out Deception Pass; it's a state park, great for hikes or picnics.

2013-03-27 10:39:22 PM

whidbey: Yeah, if they drive there by car. Understandable.  So show up on a bike. Big deal.
Also,  the only reason we have access fees up here is because righties are too cheap to fund public land because socialism.

Dammit. The headline got my hopes up.

Interesting. This landslide happened on the anniversary of the 1964 Alaska quake. A large chunk of Anchorage slid into Cook Inlet the same way this slide did.

Only for idiots.

ImpatientlyUnsympathetic: Deception Pass is gorgeous. Even in the winter.

Lynnhood is a hell hole.

Bellevue is clean, at least.

And Bellevue's PD asks questions first, before shooting.

In Lynnwood, the PD shoots, then shoots again. They don't like witnesses.

No argument there, OhYouMeanNancy, and I wish him and the Missus safety and good health! I had the honor of working under his direction, in a local production of his radio play "The George Tirebiter Story, Pt. 1: Another Christmas Carol." They'd brought me in for only one segment, and Ossman said, "I like this guy. Put him to work on the rest of the production."

I live in West Seattle, but I commute to Lynnwood every day.  Still trying to figure out the "vibe" of that town.  Is it a town?  Three separate towns?  (99, 44th, Alderwood)

Awesome community pool with WATER slides.  Great restaurants everywhere, plenty of parking ('cause there's mostly asphalt), And whenever you exit a driveway, someone always lets you in to the street.

Oh, and the KING TUT restaurant!  :)

The landslide was huge, and that bluff was covered with trees:

images.bimedia.net

wildcardjack: Well, the trees should have helped prevent erosion but I guess it's just too loose. In order to preserve the rest of the neighborhood I'd suggest building an in ground wall down to the water table. I've seen them do it from the top of weak levees to reinforce them.

Good luck finding someone to do that job.  Anyone would take one look, say "Nope!" and just walk away.
