Wow, normally that seizure-inducing editing would drive me nuts. Might actually make me angry(Strange things make me rage at weird times), but I liked it. The editing was freakin' tight. ANd yeah, a "wall;mounted lazy Susan two-man roto drum kit."would be so totally boss...

You know, to me, I think that this is a marked departure from Winny Puhh's original sound, epitomized by this new single, Meiecundimees üks Korsakov läks eile Lätti. It's easy to dismiss this as simply an orgy of cacophonous aural assault, but that's oversimplifying it.

Blessed with the carefree spirit following the departure of Olavi Sander, this new sound really glows with an easy confidence, its visionary ambition recalling the fertile sprawl of Ricardo Villalobos' 2003 debut Alcachofa. The bold vocal parts go hand in hand with the fleshed-out songwriting: each track is like an embarrassment of riches, with hooks and melodic morsels everywhere you look. Their new album Ma tahan süüa oma hinge really conflates the last 40 years of pop, soul, and meth-fueled post-punk thrash into a series of warping, ambitious songs that extol the simple, delicate joys of music, friends, murder and cannibalism.

It mixes up not only genres and traditional song structures, but entire critical value systems. The critics who rode Winny Puhh's wave to post-guilty-pleasure virtuousness may decry the album's lack of three-and-a-half minute hits; old-schoolers may dismiss its simplistic themes. But by combining the direct warmth of a picture-perfect performance with music that is complex and expansive, they're hearkening back to an era when the biggest-selling album could begin with a six-minute, multi-part, groove-based epic. It's ambitious, as they gather together everything they've attempted to date--beery, rollicking country-rock, haunted tribal hymnals, regret-soaked bar room heartbreak-- and fashion it into something close to a defining statement.

It's a bright, rich, warm record, and Winny Puhh's lyrics are appropriately transcendent, rooted in redemption, transformation, and gaining a sense of perspective about one's place in the world. This album demonstrates newfound assurance, marking them as a new songwriting voice to reckon with. Ma tahan süüa oma hinge is full of the vagrant wisdom of people who might once have hitchhiked across the country but were born into a moment when they could just join a punk band instead. It has a blazingly honest, hyper-personal quality that places it in the tradition of Elliott Smith, early Cat Power, or Liz Phair's free-flowing Girlysound tapes-- the work of a band skilled enough to make introspection seem not self-centered, but generous.

I prefer DEVO's cover.  Got all the raucous but you can hear the words too.
