The then-18-year-old Saraiva was cycling near his home in an upscale Rio neighborhood when he was set upon by several young men who were after his bike. One of them pulled a gun.

WTF is wrong with people? Shooting someone to steal a bike is so screwed up.

It just now occurred to me, at age 50, to ask why people who'll never again move or even feel their legs don't have them amputated. Why keep them? Aren't they more trouble than they're worth?

I mean no offense and I'm not saying anyone should have anything chopped off. And yes that's probably the most intelligent question I've thought of in months, another reason I've spent 13 years asking my (now-ex) GF to please remove my almost useless head. Migraines, mental problems, increasing senility, my  degenerating spine buckling under the weight it has to support: every noteworthy problem I have can be fixed by decapitation. Several times a year I consider building a guillotine.

Amputees are at very high risk. It ain't as easy as chopping it off and be done with it.   The legs may not work for neurological reasons but they are fine from a circulatory perspective. Removing a limb totally messes up the circulatory system, which can put increased stress on the heart. It can also cause blood clots that can travel to the lungs or the brain.Amputees are also at a very high risk of infection at the site of the amputation.

Oh. I'll have to do some reading then.

Well, I doubt you would have to worry about infection if you amputated your head. It would seriously interfere with circulation, however, so I don't recommend it.
