You spend your first nine months trying to get out of it, the next nine years ignoring it, then the next ninety years trying to get back in.

It's interesting to see this starting to spread. Used to be women were the only ones held up to a standard of sexual fidelity and morality. More and more men in public eye are being held to similar standards.

I find it surprising to slowly see the old boy's club crumbling but it seems pretty fair.

Adulterers have always been seen as untrustworthy.  The simple fact is that there is far more media attention into the affairs of Washington politicians now.  Male stars are still celebrated for philandering, unless they have commitments.  Women are still held to a far higher standard - Hilary Clinton has been accused in the media of being a lesbian because she had a younger, attractive aide.

Why does he even need to rehabilitate his image? You're retired, enjoy some time off, if you need money join
a couple corporate boards.

What I want to know is: why do we care? Was it a dick move on his part? Sure. But did it have any bearing on the, apparently pretty good, job he was doing? Not so much. It's one thing when there's outrage over a "Family Values" politician for cheating on their spouse (usually with a few other addendums to make it even more hypocritical), but when it's a general or your average pol, who gives a flying fark? And why is it that the ones we shouldn't care about doing this always seem to resign (see Wiener), and the ones we should don't (see Vitter)?

With Petraeus, it was more of a national security issue.  Protecting secrets of adultery can lead to blackmail.  Which it seemed to do, as least at an implicative level (ie: it wasn't overt blackmail).

With Wiener, it was more of an embarrassment for a junior Congressman.  He could have kept his job, but there was probably some political pressure to force him to resign.  Had he been in Congress for 10 years, he might have had enough clout to stick around.  Hell, I can forgive the guy for some stupid mistake, as long as he kept fighting for the people like he did.  One of the best Congressmen I've seen in a while.  At least he's coming out of the woodwork to consider a NYC mayor bid.
