It's almost like a person might ask for a specific group of people they can help in a dire situation with limited resources due to close cultural, religious and language ties so as to maximize their ability to aid through the use of a skills and knowledge largely unique to them.

But, no, I'm sure you're right. It's probably safe to assume he was just being a racist dick.

Yeah but it *was* the general thinking of two generations ago (and one still very much alive in many parts of the world today): your clan comes first. Never mind countries. Never mind mixing (the sacrilege!). When push comes to shove, you take care of your own. And your priest/whatever determines who 'your own' are.

"What difference does it make?" Lulek, who was 7, said. "I'm older than you, anyway."

"Why do you think you're older?" Rabbi Schacter asked, smiling.

"Because you cry and laugh like a child," Lulek replied. "I haven't laughed in a long time, and I don't even cry anymore. So which one of us is older?"

Well, damn.

I was 'fortunate' enough to visit Buchenwald in 1991, not long after the reunification of Germany.  At that time the museum at the camp was still the one that had existed for the East Germans to visit.  It focused on the plight of the anti-fascist insurgents who had been imprisoned there, along with the Communists and the Catholics and the Gypsies.  I could find the word "Jew" or "Jewish" in only one single display in the entire museum, and that was a passing reference to Jewish children who were freed from the camp along with the other classes of children.  As sickening as the camp would have been in its own right, the fact that the East Germans had then whitewashed their history was even more repulsive.

If I recall correctly, a few years later, they found thousands of bodies in mass graves in the forests around the camp.  But the graves dated to the period AFTER the war, and were the bodies of undesirables disposed of by the Soviet / East German regime.

/and for any of you deniers who aren't just trolling for the lulz, fark you too.

Seems like a mensch, but:

Statement by Rabbis Schachter, Willig, Rosensweig, and TwerskyIn 2010, TorahWeb.org published a brief position statement entitled "Torah View on Homosexuality". It was co-authored by

. . . Prohibited homosexual activity includes any non-platonic physical contact; even  yichud (seclusion) with someone of the same gender is forbidden for homosexually active individuals. . . .. . . today's  galus [exile] seeks to legitimize and mainstream the abominable practice (toeiva) of homosexuality. Frighteningly, we who live here are not only practically affected, but also axiologically and ideationally infected. Not only our behavior but our very
. . . Homosexual behavior is absolutely prohibited and constitutes an abomination. Discreet, unconditionally committed Jews who do not practice homosexuality but feel same sex attraction (ssa) should be sympathetically and wholeheartedly supported. They can be wonderful Jews, fully deserving of our love, respect, and support. They should be encouraged to seek professional guidance. Moreover, in an uninfected Torah society, appropriate sympathy for discreet  shomrei Torah u'mitzvos who experience but do not act upon ssa is clearly distinguished from brazen public identification of their  yetzer hara [temptation] for forbidden behavior. . . .How painful, sad and sobering is the sharp contrast between the clear attitude that should prevail in a pure Torah community and the confusion that exists among well-intentioned individuals within our communities. . . . ssa is not viewed as a challenge of  kevishas hayetzer (overcoming and taming impulses for forbidden behavior), but rather as a troubling  halacha lacking in compassion,  rachmanah litzlan [God forbid].. . . Inevitably, with respect to homosexuality,  Talmud Torah [Torah study] will place us at odds with political correctness and the temper of the times. Nevertheless, we must be honest with ourselves, and with  Hakadosh Baruch Hu [God], regardless of political correctness, considerations or consequences.Still a leader of the asshole branch of Judaism.

There was a line from a Law and Order episode that I liked (with regards to deniers):

"These people both deny and celebrate the Holocaust at the same time."

I think it's pretty accurate.

Insatiable Jesus: Since the Holocaust, we have enjoyed the murderous stylings of Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot, just to name a few. Far more people dead yet no constant hand wringing and worship of those genocides.

The thing that made the Holocaust's evil unusual was twofold - the industrialization of the process of wiping out millions of people, and the fact that it happened in 'civilized' Europe which was supposed to be beyond such things.

Mid_mo_mad_man: By pulling out you are referring to the campaign of terror against the British and thier Arab neighbors?

Do you think that was a one way street?

Mid_mo_mad_man: And again just because a person does not support Zionism does not make you Anti-Jew.

When you comment that the holocaust was good for jews it does.

Mid_mo_mad_man: Ask the ultra orthodox Jews what they think.

Your ignorance is showing again.  The "ultra orthodox" clown that hate Israel are a small minority, but why woudl I expect an antisemetic moron like you to take time to learn about the people you hate.

Thanks to the Holocaust, Germany has the weakest banks in Europe. Oh, wait.

A. There was a relatively small Russian, Chinese and Cambodian diaspora to the U.S. and Western Europe to spread concern about those genocides, and the people who did flee those regimes had less of a English-language literary and journalistic bent. B. No pictures. No death camp liberations, so not the same emotional impact. C. Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot killed people because of their perceived ideology, not in order to exterminate a "race," so not exactly the same. D. Nazi genocide against the Jews was the core of their ideology. Communists didn't write whole books about their need to exterminate "human vermin," so there's less of a "never again allow that philosophy" impetus. There are plenty of Communist regimes who didn't pursue genocide (the whole Warsaw pact, for instance, and post-Stalin USSR and post-Mao China), but no Nazi ones.

Get it now?

I think it had far mroe to do with the industrialization of the slaughter.  Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot killed most people through starvation.

If you extend "Nazism" to include associated fascisms, the Italians never embarked upon a genocide. Possibly because they just couldn't get their shiat together, but they never did.

Japan sort of did, though. Although not in a uniform manner, and they were hampered by there being a lot more Chinese than there were Jews.

Why would you do that? Nazism is its own thing; racial prejudice is an integral part of it, unlike fascism. And Nazism is still popular with a fringe.

I realize you're a troll with a hobby horse, but the correct answer is that NAZIS are special. Nazis was the answer we were looking for. Thank you for playing.

Indeed. Click the link (in the second to last paragraph) where he tells Obama the story of the soldier who was one of the liberators of Buchenwald asking his forgiveness for being too late...68 years later. It gets dustier.

mbillips: Seems like a mensch, but:

Not only our behavior but our very. . Nevertheless, we must be honest with ourselves, and with  Hakadosh Baruch Hu [God], regardless of politi ...

The Jewish obsession with purity...why, it's almost Aryan.

I loved Fark when the news items and teaser lines were. well.....Farked up.

Now people submit (and the  pun loving sissies at Fark accept) news stories to push their PC agendas, like this.

A Hero Tag, really?  So he only cares  if jews are alive in the camps, that makes him a hero?

In  the good old days of Fark, this would not even be considered for submission, unless someone maybe put on the comment  "WWII racist lives to the ripe old age of 95."  You click and read the article expecting some  Nazi no one knew existed and laugh when you find its the other Nazi that we are forever stuck with.

Mid_mo_mad_man: Deep Contact: "Are there any Jews alive here?" the rabbi asked him.
No one else mattered?

Legitimate question since more Gentiles died in the camps then the Jews. I guess they need better pr people

Nope the numbers are about equal, but remember he's a rabbi, there were christian chaplains there too, so they handled the gentiles. In fact there was a story with Dachau, when the first jewish chaplain arrived and addressed the prisoner that he was an American rabbi and was here for them, the first thing the people wanted was for him to lead a prayer service. Don't underestimate the power of faith

Mid_mo_mad_man: "One could argue that the holocaust was in the long term good for the Jews/Zionists. They get a free pass to do what they want in thier illegal nation."
