I feel like the identification took an unnecessary amount of time. The severed head matched Rifkin's style and they had believed he was connected to the crime for a few years. Knowing that he had a particular fondness for killing prostitutes - why did it take them years to look up known prostitutes from that time period? That narrowed their list of potential identities to 20.

I thought it was standard for courtesans to give
head.

Because they are prostitutes, and prostitutes don't matter.

Don't you ever watch SVU?

I've only ever watched that show about 4 times and only one of those episodes didn't have something to do with incest.

I prefer my crime shows to be incest free.

They would have found her sooner if they had a more accurate date of disappearance.

They have her listed as missing since Feb 1995, six years after her remains were found.

There is no reason listed for any discrepancy. Maybe she was a transient and no one had any idea she was missing since 1995.

This is why you should always wear a condom.  Even if all you're getting is a little head.

It's a show the entire family can enjoy.

The aunt said that a friend thought she saw her years later...that can throw off an entire investigation.

If you read the article, it explains that the victims real name was Heidi, and that Susan Spencer was just an alias.  They knew they had Susan, they just didnt know she was Heidi.

I can't believe Joel Rifkin killed an entire golf course. Sick bastard.

You ever wonder how many victims of crimes are just pinned on serial killers to close the books on the crimes?

The most interesting part to me is that Rifkin is still alive, despite having AIDS for 20 years.... wonder how much NY taxpayers are paying for his antiviral medications?

Little Stuart Rifkin likes to go shopping with his mother.

This is news because she was good-looking. If she was homely it wouldn't be covered at all.

I'd say it's news because she was the victim of a well known serial killer.

"It's the fulfillment of my whole career," Carnall said.

Congrats.  It only took you 24 years to solve this when the killer had already admitted it, and the victim had been reported missing THE DAY AFTER you found the head.

That's some crackerjack sleuthing, is what that is.

Enjoy your pension.

Because criminals never, ever falsely confess to a crime, not to mention that the victim was going by an alias.

Hopewell, NJ? Isn't that where the Lindbergh baby was kidnapped? Is Rifkin possibly related to Bruno Hauptmann?

//thought  Subby was talking about the still-unidentified Long Island Serial Killer

Growing up in Hopewell in the late 80s/early 90s, this case was TERRIFIC fodder for slumber party horror stories. I think between 1989 and about 1993, this may have been more effective than a good game of Truth or Dare.

Actually, when I'm back in town and am driving non-locals around, I point it out -- "And this is the golf course where they found the severed head."

The Lindbergh kidnapping is a bigger story, obviously... but the Lindbergh house is also waaay out of the way.

Read the article. It's a pretty easy mystery to solve.
