I didn't know by posting my thoughts on this matter that I would be viciously gang-raped (as Mike Tyson put its,) "until I like it". You guys know what? Screw it. As I cannot reasonably justify my position on this matter, I have decided to chance my stance on this subject. You all now have my explicit blessing to marry, as well as my support to repeal DOMA.

I know, I know, what are the chances right? After all, not one anti-gun activist has been swayed by my logical and reasonable points about the safety of a gun in the hands of a well trained user. No one. Not even close. So why would anyone with an opinion be swayed by opposing opinion on some random internet post? Well for several reasons. As mentioned early, I didn't think my views were particularly excessive, but I guess we're on a Bell curve here. With a distinct lack of trolls and militant right wingers in this thread, my slightly to the Conservative side views place me 100% to the right side of this left side thread. Pehaps had the standard mix of trolls shown up, my antics would have been lost in the enusing chaos, and not become an issue. But as it where, they did, which garnered quite the bit of thought provoking discussion.

Secondly, the following sweaty dogpile on yours truely, has made it clear to me, that while I may hold a certian ideal, I've no practical reason for such ideal other than 'because'. Third, since it really doesn't matter that much to me, and means so much to you guys, it would serve more good to pledge my support. So from now on you can consider me a member of "Team Pink". Just an honorary member, mind you. I'm not batting for the other team now, but I will root for you from the sidelines.

MythDragon: Well, marriage has always been defined as "the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law" (Merriam Webster).

For being so "old-fashioned", you sure speak pretty graphically about homosexual males. Are you sure you aren't a little curious yourself about this whole penis thing?

Tell me more about how horses and vacuum cleaners can voluntarily enter into legal contracts.

Also, please introduce me to the horse or vacuum cleaner who can provide consent and enter into a legal contract.

I've always supported gay marriage, but recently I've been leaning towards a complete separation of "marriage" and "domestic partnership." For everyone, gay or straight. The state would have no say in who marries - that would be completely up to whichever religious institution performs the ceremony. Likewise, marriage would cease to be a legal contract. That would instead be a Domestic Partnership Contract, issued by the state, and between consenting adults, gender being irrelevant. You could choose to be married but not Domestic Partners (and would not be treated legally as a domestic unit) or Domestic Partners but not married (if you don't care about such things) or both. Or neither. Whatever. But this would remove religion from the argument. Which is a good thing because in a society which claims the tenet "freedom of religion," religion has no place in civil law.

Now if the next step is marriage between three or more, same deal. As long as everyone is an adult able to enter a contract. The law has some work to do to catch up on that one in order to iron out the messy contract details, but we'll get there.

There. I solved the whole thing. You're all welcome.

I grew up with the understanding that gay was bad and unnatural.  To me the thought of two guys getting it on is still kind of icky, but over the years I slowly came to understand that:

(a) being gay really isn't a choice and is as natural as anything else Nature has come up with, and She's produced some mind boggling stuff
(b) what other consenting adults do with each other in private really isn't my business
(c) gay people really can and do love people of their same sex
(d) realizing all of the above, I have no valid basis on which to deny them the same rights, joy and burden that my wife and I have by being pronounced married in the eyes of the law

If you can stop a contract between two adults based on the sexual chromosome of the people wishing to enter into a contract, something that is not permitted by federal law in every other circumstance, it's not a slippery slope argument to ask:

Why can't California make it illegal for a white man to give a black man a haircut?
What stops California from deciding that people known to carry recessive traits for heart disease are forbidden from marrying?
What stops California from deciding that marriage is between an man and woman, of IQ tested to be no less than 120 each?
Why can't California to do something about their smog by saying ethnic Europeans can drive on Mondays and Thursday, ethnic Africans can drive on Tuesdays and Friday, and ethnic Asians can drive Wednesdays?
Why can't California give a comprehensive genetic screening, and prosecute for child abuse if you ignore the statistics and have a child with a birth defect anyway?

The one that actually got me wasn't the funniest or the cleverest, it was the one that said "Stop Being Mean."  Because if the younger generation sees this - correctly - as older people being mean for no good reason, then the battle is pretty much won.
