This. So this.

So if that one falls, can we put away monogamy next?

2013-03-27 09:06:51 AM
Why do we have any marriage?
Just nullify the whole lot and let's all get in a big naked pile and get nasty, the world's going to end soon.

Grumpy cat, YOLO, Dumbledore, "ain't nobody got time for that" - pop culture has spoken!

For an interesting analysis of the evangelical voting mindset, pick up this month's Harper's.

I see the pro-DOMA crowd went with pre-printed signs. Good idea--helps ensure you actually get a few of the words spelled right.

Good for them. This should be over pretty quickly.

If I had the energy to go down there, I would go with something like 'Gay marriage may not produce kids, but they raise an awful lot of yours!'

Justify that position.  Explain to us how allowing anyone who wants to marry, to marry, will objectively make the country worse or negatively affect you in any tangible way.

Maybe something like, "Well, it's OK if some of them normal-lookin' ones want to marry, or like two really hot lesbo chicks, but none of that fruity freaky crap. I don't wanna see no poofter in drag getting married to some dude dressed like a lumberjack or nothing like that. It's OK if they want to get married, but they shouldn't act all gay about it."?

Anyone have photos of the signs from the pro-DOMA crowd? Is it all just "The bible says..." stuff or more imaginative?

I'm for equality, but, damn, some of those signs were awful.

A handful were OK, but, jeez, if you might be photographed with your sign for posterity's sake, take a little pride in penmanship or something. My kindergartener could make more presentable signs than some of those.

Hahahahahaha ... I've got one ...

The only incest laws in Ohio deal with the parent/child relationship over the age of consent (16).

Which means, in no parsed words, that IN OHIO, you can marry your sister, your brother, or your cousin and have that marriage be recognized in ALL 50 STATES.

Take that GAY MARRIAGE!

Based on the few that snuck in to the pictures in TFA, they all seemed to revolve around kids needing a mommy and a daddy. I guess that's what the pro-DOMA crowd are going with. I guess if you can't conceive of any reason for marriage other than pumping out kids, that might make a certain kind of sense to you, as long as you don't think too hard about it. Still, I have to think there's some really badly spelled signs in there with crap about Jebus and Adam&Steve and "its aways ment 1 man+1 woman".

bulldg4life: How is someone slightly towards banning marriage equality?

Well, marriage has always been defined as "the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law" (Merriam Webster). I am not apposed to civil unions by any means. But it seems that 'marriage' is man and wife. I guess it brings up the argument that if you can marry whatever you want, why not a horse or vacuum cleaner?

But that said, I think if you want to give another man a vigorous butt-rodgering, that's your own business. You want to live together with the same sex for the rest of your life, and share your health benifits? That's fine too. It just seems to me that an actual 'marriage' should be opposite sex. If a gay couple gets unionized, why do they need to be 'married?'

to sum it up, by being 'slightly' for the DOMA, I think it should pass, but if it does not, I will say "oh well" and go about my life. It's not important enough for me to protest at all.

The one that actually got me wasn't the funniest or the cleverest, it was the one that said "Stop Being Mean."  Because if the younger generation sees this - correctly - as older people being mean for no good reason, then the battle is pretty much won.

Marriage has always been defined like that? I'm not sure you want to start off with that argument.

Also, your attempted "desperate but equal" thing with civil unions dismisses the entire point behind the legal benefits of marriage. Now, if you would like to amend your point to say that ALL marriage within our legal framework should be removed, then go for it. However, if there is a legal framework for marriage that grants certain benefits (tax implications, power of attorney, estate issues) then it should be extended to everyone.

I'm not going to respond to the reducto ad absurdum part of your post because only goddamn idiots continue to miss the "two consenting adults" issue.

Roest: So if that one falls, can we put away monogamy next?

Probably.  It's the next biggest social group that's being banned, has some hard-core proponents, and doesn't have a lot of popular vocal opposition outside kooky religious idiots.

Plus, there's a lot of analogous arguments to be made.  Arrangement common in nature, analogous sexual behavior (having multiple partners) isn't illegal, no known bad effects on offspring, helps relevant family units keep their affairs in order, hospital visitation rights, etc.

Additionally, this (the gay marriage issue) has been much more about breaking the stranglehold of religious institutions on government than about the actual, y'know, issue.  So the hard work for poly families has kind of already been done here, it's been established that the "this is really no one else's business but ours" principle wins over "but but but JESUS" principle for the first time in a millennium even on non-economic matters.

//What we morally _should_ address next is our literal disenfranchisement of certain groups, most notably ex-felons.  But there's still too much "think of the children" going around for that one.

2013-03-27 09:52:52 AM
Most of those deserve the Spiffy tag.

59 (go home homophobes you're all drunk), 9 (grumpy cat, or whatever), and 1 (nobody got time for that) deserve Asinine.

All the ones drawing analogies to the black civil rights movement are spot-on. I feel like this is going to be a more compelling argument to people than trying to pin them down with their own religion. As much as that feels like that should work, it never seems to.

I really got a kick out of 50 (If god hates gay people, why are they so cute), even if it was just silly trolling.  33 (this is not your church) was awesome too, in a more serious way.
