Kahtanna Culp, 29, is charged with improper relationship with a student, according to court records.

I really don't think 29 has been considered middle aged since the Middle Ages.

As someone who will probably end up teaching AP Physics in a couple of years, I'm getting a kick out of this reply.

In all seriousness though, isn't salary generally determined by education level?  The highest paid teachers at every high school I went to (that's five, if you're counting) were all PhDs in various subjects.  My AP History teacher was addressed as "Doc", and made over $90K back in 1993.

Nope, AFAIK it's more closely correlated with property values and politics.  Wealthy liberal suburbs may be receptive to paying all teachers a living wage, but if you work in Fox Nutwork country you could be teaching trust fund babies for peanuts while half the district's payroll goes to the football coach.  With poverty-stricken areas you're screwed either way, as there's no money to pay you.

education level is tied to it a lot but that doesn't always make sense.  Maybe the ap physics teacher we mentioned could benefit from a masters or phd.  The wage scales are set by tenure and education though.  So for example if you are a teaching music to first second and third graders you get the same compensation bump for getting your phd as a teacher that teaches AP Calculus, Physics, and Statistics.  That is why you see so many teachers with masters degrees, it is an instant raise and its not even that hard to get.

The wages also completely ignore the private sector compensation.  The market value for someone with a PHD in math for example is incredibly higher than someone with one in say philosophy.  Without even considering the subjects they teach, this creates an enormous problem because the highly skilled teacher with the better degree would opt for the private sector because he will be paid on the same level as the less in demand degree.

We also have been tied to the thought that a degree is an accurate measure of teaching ability and proficiency at your subject.  Maybe someone with a bach degree and 20 years experience as a structural engineer makes a better physics teacher than a 25 year old with a fresh physics PHD?  The compensation difference in huge between them though.

NickelP: NickelP: dragonchild: Z-clipped: In all seriousness though, isn't salary generally determined by education level?

This is not a thing. Try 28-29, if they're lucky.  Anything lower is ridiculous, and they're not working for a high school, that's for sure.

He also said he had lived at her apartment intermittently from the middle of April until the end of November.

So, what we've learned so far is that teachers have sex with their students until they get caught, and they get paid too much, especially the ones who teach subjects/ages that are not as important as the other subjects/ages. Also, Starbucks and insurance coverage results may vary.
So, teachers are greedy and horny? Why can't we just have the schools hire nuns or something?

I originally had majored in Education before I changed majors at the last second. Even back then there were numerous discussions in class about what was an appropriate relationship with students and what was beyond being readily available and accessible. Granted, this was in the Nineties, and social media has changed all that, but I see she had a Twitter account and was actively tweeting with students back and forth. I'm not sure my take on this, but it's possible that it's a tad much. I remember my nephew had a band teacher with a Twitter account and if I'm not mistaken the administration kind of urged him out of that idea, maybe even made a rule about that for teachers. It's kind of like the undercover cop thing works I guess... I mean, how far in are you willing to let yourself go? This one went all the way in. No pun intended.

She is charged with "  improper relationship with a student".
All you lawyers out there in farkdom lay into this question.
If she moved out of state would she be extradited back for such a charge? is it a felony? She was not charged with rape or childendangerment. She could use the defense that she "fled" the state to avoid the blackmail of an abusive little twat banger. Think about that for a minute.

Well, they'd have to be non-students with respect to the state in question, or in some states the district in question, since that's the actual law being violated, not statutory rape, in most cases.

Also, they'd only have to be 17.  17 is the AoC in Texas, not 18.  Like the vast majority of the US.

I couldn't drink at my grad school orientation, and a straight PhD program can be as little as 4 years, depending on what specifically you're doing.  25 isn't unheard of for someone that went straight in from undergrad.  Somewhat unusual, though, yes, especially from institutions that make you get a master's first.

Yeah, legally they're adults, which was kind of the point.

Reread what you wrote carefully

Can we dispense with the semantics get back to discussing the details of servicing the middle aged teachers?

Kahtanna Culp, 29, is charged with improper relationship with a student, according to court records.

I really don't think 29 has been considered middle aged since the Middle Ages.

You are soooo missing the point here.

29 is the gateway to the dirty 30's when women go into their sexual peaks. IIRC the energy is similiar to a teenage boy. Middle aged is 40 or 50.
Good on the teacher for lawyering up.

He also said he had lived at her apartment intermittently from the middle of April until the end of November.

Why do you say that?  I think it was a pretty accurate analysis.

The top ten states for teacher pay in 2010-11 were blue states (minus Alaska, for obvious reasons), and the bottom 10 were red states (counting Florida as red, again for obvious reasons).  The median in South Dakota in 2011 was about $35K, and the median in NY and Mass. were both over twice that.  Here.  (I'm not vouching for the conclusions drawn in that article- it's just a convenient listing of states).

There are definitely exceptions about money being available for teaching in poverty stricken areas, but that money is generally coming from state and federal grants, not from the local tax base.  And if you went to a school where the football team didn't receive more money than all of the arts and music programs combined, you're probably in the minority.

What's your beef?

If she fled, she'd probably be convicted in absentia, sentenced to the maximum possible time, and a warrant issued for her arrest. Plus bail forfeited along with whatever extra time they tack on for fleeing. Bail jumpers have to go so far underground they live like illegal immigrants, working cash jobs and the like, or just leave the country, otherwise they get caught all the time.

Same thing goes for deadbeat dads, too. My dad moved away and hit the underground economy for years before finally coming back and paying a settlement to avoid jail time.
