Summer of 1968. That's when Chicago knew how to deal with hipsters...

/or hippies, yippees. Commies. Whatever.

"The people you are referring to are called hipsters, Hank. And they walk slowly 'cause they've got nowhere to be, man"

I consider myself fairly "hip" to the music the kids dig now days, but the only acts I'd be interested to see are The Breeders, Wire, Low and Trail of Dead. The only other acts I've even heard of are Bjork, Newsome, Yo La Tengo, MIA and R Kelly and of course Belle and Boring.

2013-03-27 07:00:40 AM
Bjork
Wire
The Breeders
Swans
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
El-P
Killer Mike

Well, it's 15% of a good show.

Man all those young people having fun to music that isn't Pearl Jam or STP because everyone knows REAL music stopped with the break up of Rage Against The Machine or any other without-the-hair glam band replacement that was popular when I went to high school in the early to mid-90s. It makes me so angry.

/it's nice to see Yo La Tengo getting a little more attention

A Pitchfork Festival in Chicago?  Scramble the jets.

I was with MagSeven until Belle and "Boring". The Life Pursuit isn't boring, damn you!

Swans, Metz and Trail of Dead could destroy that town. I'm just too old/broke/family tethered to invest in watching it happen. Emo sigh.

Nice to see the Breeders back in action (with the best of their lineups, no less).

Wire

Swans

The first 3 are established and well known. What are hipsters doing at such an event?

yeah, but they play music that you can't call rock to it and rock or pop and poop on it

I'd go for Wire and the Breeders. The rest of them can new jack swing on my nuts.

(even M.I.A. - although I would have seen her a few years back)

Also, Chicago- you guys have such a great history. Why aren't Arcwelder, Killdozer or Naked Raygun or like any band that has been on Touch and Go ever playing? Or is it an overkill kind of thing?

LIghten up. One of the best parts of getting old is making fun of what the kids are doing nowadays.

Welcome to my favorites list. Touch and Go is a fantastic label, so many great bands and albums.

I will probably go Saturday, maybe Sunday.

eiger, you are too right. I love it when they "discover" the music we listened to before they were born, so cute. Now I know how my parents felt when I raided their album collections.

meh lineup.

Bonnaroo is 20 times better and only costs twice as much.

I am pretty jovial about these threads because online hating on youth culture is hilarious. It's just that the people who are usually complaining the most about HIPSTERS are the ones that discovered Nirvana after Nevermind and think that bands like the Pixies and Tool are "artsy".

For the people who actually like music and seek out new stuff, this is an amazing time to be around where you don't have to send money to ads you see in poorly printed or photocopies zines for new music or learning about bands from eighth gen mix tapes. Getting all bent out of shape because some band ripped off Sugar again is just laughable.

I will say this to this generation. EFF you FOREVER for making Owl City a thing.

Because People in power are Stupid: What is a hipster?

Hipster:  Person who either likes things that I do not, or likes things that I'm far too apathetic to check out on my own.

Great, there goes my ride on the Green Line.  Thank god they'll all be getting off at Ashland.

Girion47: meh lineup.

Maybe twice as better; you forgot to account for how Pitchfork is taking place in civilization.

Narcissistic douchebags that try to self-confirm their superiority to you by looking like idiots, listening to crap, and struggling hard to hide the fact that they have butterflies for brains.

So add another 2-300 for lodging during the festival, the price difference gets even better.   And who needs civilization?  Being out on the Farm is super relaxing, good food is available from the vendors, and micro-breweries are well represented.   Keep your civilization and squalor.

Surely any band that actually exists is passé?
Disaster Area from the Douglas Adams books is the best band I never heard  of.

Amusing to see the Based God showing up in the Friday lineup, sticking out like Wonton Soup amongst the relatively no-name crowd.

To be fair, I haven't given them a fair shot. An ex of mine was really into them and it was during my Deftones phase so I wasn't quite receptive. Recommend me some tracks. I'll try again.

You could listen to one Deftones song on repeat and get their whole discography out of it.   I've only ever heard one other band capable of that....Nickelback.

I really liked the one that Trevor Horn produced (Dear Catastrophe Waitress?), though I think all the B & S fans hated it.  Therefore, I am dead to cool people.

Parquet Courts is the shiat.  I love Toro y Moi as well and I'd definitely check out Foxygen.

MIA?  While I saw this great show of hers in 2007, she hasn't done anything of note since Kala.  Is she just going to play Arular?

There are way too many bands in that lineup that play mandolins.  It seems like a lot of Dave Matthews Band fans to wade through to see St. Vincent.

I'm not so sure, Free Ice (probably other tracks too) sounds like a SY tribute, coupled with the sleeve of that EP looking like Raymond Pettibon work it's all a bit 'old'?
I like Sonic Youth but we don't need another one.

Wait....Merchandise?  Holy shiat. A friend of mine was in a bunch of really great, talented bands and made amazing music and just dropped it all to be in a shiatty band called Merchandise because he was scared of "selling out".

Now his picture graces Pitchfork magazine.

HA HA! He's an asshole.

I saw MIA at ACL. She sucked. The only way she got the crowd into her show was when she brought people on stage to screen her while she sparked up.
