My school just started a confessions page.  I read through a couple of them and they're clearly unfunny troll lies or boring and stereotypical (OMG had sex in the library!).  I think John Gabriel has a theory about anonymity on the internet too.

Honestly, its in the best interests of the college to start to police Facebook. Kids are too fng stupid not to post pictures of themselves doing illegal/embarrasing things, and it eventually comes back to bite the school.

This new thing is anonymous posting, done through facebook.  How do you police anonymous posting?  Also, let em be stupid.  They're adults.

You mean people have finally figured out they don't have to use any real identifying information on Facebook?

AMAZING!

There are 2 successful Fb strategies. Either don't have a page at all or friend your mother, boss, spiritual leader, etc. and post accordingly.

Kids are getting pretty god damned stupid.  I think we should lower education funding, that will help.

Art Sunleaf, Dean of Students:

"They were like, 'How did you do this?'"

This is why you go to good schools, not Loras College.

Not really, with few exceptions (the ones fully paying their own way through school) College kids are exactly that. Poorly supervised children.

They can be stupid, but don't involve the college.  Remember that parents foot the bill (at least part of it) and administrators don't want to get their sugar daddies/mommies upset.

/yes, young adults will do stupid things no matter what college they attend, but I can see why the college doesn't really want their name attached to it.

Exactly.   Dear anon college blog, I never believed the stories here were true until I was in the library one day when the entire cheer leading squad walked in.....

There was an anonymous comment board when I was in college (over 20 years ago) but it was used for serious discussion instead of one-upmanship. Unlike in this story, replies had to be anonymous. An ACL prevented logged-in users from commenting.

We had a page here that posted for about a week, then stopped for some reason (and the "confessions" were so ridiculous that it was hard to believe anyways). Then a counter-page was made for compliments because most of the posts were anonymous trashing of faculty and students. Then about 2 weeks later another confessions page popped up and has been running for a week now, touting itself as "new and improved, with no bullshiat."

Anyways the point I'm trying to make here is that this fad is pretty stupid.

Since Loras' page was taken down, Sunleaf said he's gotten calls from a number of major universities across the country. "They were like, 'How did you do this?' " he said.

Iowa, heartland of suppressive censorship.

Rocklin said it's unlikely that the U of I would try to have the U of I Confessions page taken down: "It's very hard for me to imagine a situation in which we would have a concern that would trump the First Amendment rights of students."

Or, wait. Iowa, land of freedom of expression.

No wonder it's a purple state.

Linda Stewart Kroon, director of the UI Women's Resource and Action Center,

Nice acronym (WRAC). I wonder what her thoughts are about men.

The confessions were anonymous?

So basically like TFD threads

2013-03-26 02:24:52 PM
So people make it all the way to college and don't know the difference between 'confession' and 'bragging'?

So this guy walks into confession and says' Forgive me father for I have sinned. I've been sleeping with my 18 year old neighbor'.
The priest asks how long it's been since his last confession.
'I've never been to confession' replied the penitent.
'What? How old are you?' asks the priest.
  'I'm 65' he says.
'If your 65 years old why have you never been to confession?' asks the priest.
The man replies 'well, I'm Jewish.'
The priest is flabbergasted. 'Why is a 65 year old Jewish man coming to confession now?' he asks.
The man says 'Hell father, I'm 65 and I'm schtupping an 18 year old- I'm telling anyone who'll listen!'

I highly doubt that it would trample any First Amendment rights for the university to insist that the university name not be used at the title of a page on Facebook.  If that means the page has to be taken down - oh well.  Start a "Confessions of College Students in Central Iowa*" page instead and brag away: no precious rights taken away.

*Disclaimer: I do not know if U of I is in central Iowa, but it's a small state, so it probably doesn't matter anyway.

Nice to see an educator doing his job.

I know someone who has really stupid photos up on his FB from his college days. Now he's a junior executive and he is fully aware he cannot lock down who has those photos or what pages they are on or what sort of privacy settings his friends have. I was kind enough not to say, "I told you so." but did say, "What the hell were you thinking?" when they popped up in my feed years ago. (Yeah, we were both early adopters.)

Civil_War2_Time noted that  Art Sunleaf, Dean of Students, was quoted saying,"They were like, 'How did you do this?," and observed:

(CW2T:)  This is why you go to good schools, not Loras College.

This, This, a thousand times this. The "like" problem, however, is  both everywhere in K-12 teaching *and* making discouraging inroads into teaching by the younger generation of college professors everywhere.

Yep. Kids are stupid. My late cousin's daughter, who just turned 15, has been posting on
FB about how she smoked crack and "got so high", how she let some guys run a train on
her, etc... She thinks its funny. We've explained to her that there's no such thing as true
privacy online, that once something's on the 'net, it's always out there for her family, future
bosses, etc... to stumble across. She doesn't care.

I thank God that my oldest son thinks FB is stupid. He has an account on Deviant Art to
showcase his writing and to do some collab stuff with others but that's it. My youngest has
expressed an interested in FB but he's only 11. So hell no.

FB has been great for finding friends from years long past, and for work stuff, but that's
about it.

I am dean, so I'm getting a kick, etc.

Some student recently started a confessions page for our institution.  It's mostly sophomoric nonsense, but they were using our logo.  We had our attorneys send a C&D notice to Facebook and they immediately took down the logo.

If kids want to act like kids, why the fark should I care?  They can have their little page.  However, I am an academic dean, not a student life dean - those are the folks who get their panties in a wad over this sort of thing.... which sort of cracks me up.

Gaseous Anomaly: FTA: "The confessions page for Loras College, a small Catholic school in Dubuque, didn't last a full 24 hours."

And this, I think, is what everyone is overlooking:  "Dear, Facebook, When I was young, my priest...."  "Dear, Facebook, when I was on campus yesterday, I saw a priest and we...."

THAT's why the page has been taken down.  The U of I spokesperson really couldn't care less what students confess to, so long as they don't implicate the university.  "I'm a student at U of I, and I went to see the campus of Loras College, when a priest came upon me."  (That's it, no ellipses.)

It's the religion that's the problem.  Stupid kids will be stupid.  Stupid religions will be stupid and fascist.  PROTECT THE BRAND.

That's sickening and disheartening.  Why don't these girls have any self-respect?  I don't have any answers or solutions, I just want you to know that many people feel similarly - the moral decline of young girls is a real problem in this country.  You should post her name and cell number in this thread to teach her a lesson about privacy and decency.

/Post a picture of her at gymnastics practice too, that'll really show her.
