Which version of Genesis, out of the two older myths that were cobbled together?

2013-03-26 09:23:07 AM
Who gets to pick the judge?  If the case is being heard in East Pigfark, Tennessee, I call bias.

So they stack the court with Creationist judges?

2013-03-26 09:24:49 AM
"The Literal Genesis Trial contest would be held in a courthouse in Santa Ana, California and Mastropaolo has said he will create a list of potential superior court judges to decide the case. The participants would have to agree on a judge. "

I can see where this is going. Someone will take up the offer, he will create a list of retarded judges that have zero belief in anything scientific, the challenger will not agree to any judge and Mastropaolo will proclaim that "No evolutionist is brave enough to take me on in a court of law using science!"

Laughable, at best.  Like we know enough to prove anything. Man-made climate change anyone?

I was thinking the same thing.  Sounds to me like this guy is trying to stack the deck.  Minitrial?  What's wrong with a regular trial if you're absolutely positive your arguments can hold up?  Also, changing the rules of evidence to  "objective, valid, reliable and calibrated"?  What the fark does that even mean?  Calibrated to what, exactly?

Easy.

Genesis says that Yahweh created the day and the night... and then a day later, He created the sun and the moon to rule over them. This is a gross misunderstanding of where day and night come from, as though day and night exist apart from the sun and the Earth's rotation.

Also, who the hell did Cain marry after he departed for Nod?

No self respecting scientist with 10k to burn would take part in a Side show like this.  Now on the other hand if he would modify the debate, I would argue the FSM creation mythos vs. Genesis any day.  Because his great noodly appendages crafting a flawed earth after a Night of Heavy Drinking is just about as disprovable as Genesis.

Mastropaolo believes that evolution cannot be proved scientifically. "It turns out that there is nothing in the universe [that] is evolving, everything is devolving, everything is going in the opposite direction," he said.

I disagree.

If I had the $10k to put up, I'd be walking out of there a happy man. Just his statement alone about "devolving" is so mindnumingly easy to refute it isn't even funny. Coupled with the sheer volume of irrefutable evidence that pretty much everything in Genesis is bunk, and how easy it is to refute creationist mumbo-jumbo, a lobotomized baboon on heroin could do it. So you know... I might have a chance.

It is probably one of those stupid word games that fundies love so much.  Evolution is just a "theory" and not a "fact".  They like to use the nonscientific definition that a theory is an idea and a fact is a constant unchanging truth and as we keep adding to and refining the theory of evolution then it sin't a fact.  They also like to role other none related ideas into evolution. Evolution doesn't explain how the universe was created or how life started so ipso facto it is wrong and the Bible right.

Genesis is a metaphor for spiritual development.

I'll take that in cash, please.

These right here.  You can't use logic and reason to argue your point and expect the other side to concede, since the other guy never used logic to get there in the first place.

On the positive side, he'll be building a list of judges who need to be targeted for recall elections and/or impeachment.

This guy is likely to find a "judge" that isn't going to rule on the scientific merits.  I highly doubt this contest will end up being in any way fair.  At best, the judge will just say "it can't be proven either way" and it will be a draw for the money (but a loss for science).

I would agree, provided that the judges are an unbiased third party that are randomly selected from the tv series "The Universe".

KatjaMouse: Can we call the guys who did this already with a PA school system? Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial

I graduated from Dover in 2000, one year before the derp hit the fan.  To be fair, all the high school science teachers treated it like conscientious objectors.  My one teacher gave a one sentence disclaimer saying basically "The school board is making me mention this Panda book, now let's move on to science and not total bullshiat."

We did kick the school board out next election though, so at least we redeemed ourselves a little.  Our school only had like 600 people, the town was around 6,000.  It was weird being the center of attention for a national outrage de-jour.

Creationists think this is just "adaptation", which is different from evolution.

Or something.

I get what you're saying but likely you'd walk out angry, frustrated, and 10k out of pocket, because he's put his friends as judges, and will refuse to accept your evidence as true. If he doesn't believe factual evidence already because it contradicts the perceived word of god, then how is that going to change? It won't, nothing will convince him, and he won't pay up. It's like conspiracy theorists who can never change their mind because anything contradictory to their delusion is a falsified piece of data put there as part of the scam. Which means Lucifer planting dinosaur fossils.

He can argue away biblical inaccuracies thanks to cognitive dissonance. He can argue away scientific mistakes in his language because he's not a scientist and may have misused a term. It's not a real trial so he will not be held accountable or responsible for his words.

If it was a real trial, with judges not selected by him, then perhaps people would be all over it.

Did God create man before or after animals?  Because the Bible says both happened, and the both can't be true.

seems like a variation on the almost patented Kansas school board game of 'firing up the base'...
step 1: get someone in the school system to say the word 'evolution'.
step 2. get someone to be indignant that they are teaching their children 'evolution' instead of about 'god'
step 3. keep story in the news for weeks
step 4. demand very public 'trial' or 'hearing'
step 5 have some intelligent college professor, preferably from out of state (one of the coasts) to explain why teaching evolution is the only reasonable approach based on current scientific understanding... also preferable if he could sound condescending when poked to talk about religion and intelligent design, etc...
step 6 - uppitty professor from back east wins debate
step 7 - base is sufficiently fired up... pushes through whatever they wanted in the first place and then elects even more conservative fundie school board members at the next election...
... rinse, repeat...

2013-03-26 09:44:46 AM
Scientists have long recognized that creationists who issue such "challenges" are charlatans and no one will accept the offer, as it will be known to be as fraudulent as any previous such "offer". As such, he will declare victory and claim that scientists secretly "know" their theory to be untenable, hence their refusal to subject their work to a non-scientific circus.

Creationists are liars. Nothing that they say or do is credible.

I do believe we'll be seeing this guy's name on a GOP primary ballot within a decade.  Educated, loose with money, believes in a literal interpretation of the bible, knows how to stack a deck, and with a significant sense of being oppressed.  He'll make Dr. Ben Carson look like the actual second coming.
