It's a shame Johnny Carson is no longer alive because I'm sure he would have loved to be the guy that told Leno to get his ass out of the chair.

After the first few shows I decided he was pretty lame so I quit watching.  The extra sleep did me good.

He ran out of OJ jokes long before he stopped talking about OJ.

WTF Indeed: It's a shame Johnny Carson is no longer alive because I'm sure he would have loved to be the guy that told Leno to get his ass out of the chair.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has been partially subsidized by the rotational speed of Carson in his grave. They found that the generators hooked up there can generate enough power for 9000 homes.

I tuned in to the Tonight Show last night for the first time in years to hear him trash NBC. Left disappointed.

How about not leaving some of the headlines on the desk? That just pisses me off for some stupid reason.

I find it funny the pic Nikki Finke puts for this is a snake wrapped around Big Jaw's ego-soaked head.

I find it hilarious that he's cracking jokes about shiatty NBC is, when he's probably their biggest problem.  It's like the head chef of a restaurant joking about how much their food sucks.

He's a good guy, company man. They like him. And the 12:30 guy going to 11:30 is the logical process even though they've screwed it up twice. Imagine that, they hit a home run TWICE at 12:30 and then screwed it up both times. Sure they pulled ahead of Letterman in ratings but was the margin that big of a deal? Would CBS have given Leno a shot? You'd have Letterman with maybe no real competition for a decade and a half, transitioning to Conan much earlier (2007?). The Tonight show might still be a thing.

/Poor Conan.

Just like Leno's schtick doesn't appeal to everyone neither does Conan's. And timing wouldn't have mattered with Conan, he just needed to tone down the goofy things he does. I know my parents and in-laws (old people just for clarification) were all willing to give him a chance. But within the first minute of his first show as the new host he jumped out on stage and did that robot dance he does and I could collectively hear my relatives changing the channel. If he had just toned down the nutty shiat he would be the host today. I realize it's the nutty shiat that makes him who he is, but wrong audience. To my parents Jay is like those old worn out socks they won't get rid of. Conan was like the new compression socks the doctor forced them to wear, and they wore them once.

He was still making Clinton jokes six years into W's presidency. Speaks volumes about his relevancy.

Exactly.  I like Conan a lot and I still watch his show on TBS pretty regularly (even though his monologues are kind of suffering), but the old folks who had made up the Tonight Show's viewership for decades were never, ever going to get into Conan's awkward weirdo schtick.

Also, Andy Richter is the best second banana ever.

Conan's schtick wasn't really the issue. The issue was that Jay Leno had such an iron clad contract when they gave him the 10 pm show that even after it tanked and affiliates were threatening to not show it; the only way to get him off the air would be to offer him the 1135 timeslot back or to give him a ton of money (way more than what they settled for with Conan).

The funny thing about ratings is that I read an article that said that Conan was getting better ratings in 2010 for the tonight show than Leno is getting now. And that was with the shiatty Jay Leno 10pm show killing the late night ratings for NBC.

The only good thing about Jay Leno's 10pm dumptruck was that the shows that weren't cancelled to make room for it(RIP "My Name Is Earl") were pretty much impossible to cancel for a year, letting Chuck(which I liked a lot) go on.

The amount of attention that late night talk shows get is staggering, especially when you consider how few people watch them.

Well in my not so humble opinion, there's nothing about contracts to blame here. It has to do with the fact that 7 out of the 8 people I know who watched the Tonight Show on a regular basis tuned in the first night Conan was on and had their fingers crossed that he wouldn't try and "stay normal". Like I said above, not a minute into his monologue and he did that little robot dance and it was over. All he had to do was stand up there and do his comedy routine, and go sit down and interview the guests. The ratings fell pretty hard and fast when he was on because people wanted the Tonight Show with Conan OBrien, and got the Late Show with Conan OBrien instead. I am not defending Leno but out of the 8 people that I know who watched the Tonight Show all of them were watching since it was Carson's. They put up with Leno because, frankly he didn't act weird. I don't know how else to say it, but he came out and did his comedy, some hit, some miss, and stayed with the basic format Carson laid out. When he changed things it was gradual over time. Conan thought he could come in and just sweep these people off their feet with his brand of comedy and got his ass handed to him. He did this to himself. He had a later show to pull his wacky antics and an audience of followers. But when he moved up in time slots he just ignored the new (to him) audience and tried to force it down their throats.

Say what you want about contracts and such but it boils down to Conan was handed the keys and did a burnout first time in the car. Keys were grabbed and handed back to Leno. It's all about ratings. Truth be told it's probably a mix of what we are all speculating here, but we will never truly know.

Your right it was all about ratings. And the ratings it was about was Leno's horrible 10pm ratings. It was killing the ratings for the affiliates late local news. And a bunch of major affiliates were threatening to stop playing the leno show and show syndicated stuff in its place (like repeats of Seinfeld or Law and Order). Those were serious threats, but Leno's contract was so good that the only way to get him off at 1130 was either to pay him millions or give him back the 1135 slot. Conan's ratings were respectable. And they were growing, and good with some key demos. He was in a better position compared to his competition than Leno was when he took over from Carson, and his numbers were better than what Jay gets now.

Here's what I find really hard to believe. That I just typed all that for this topic. Someone must have snuck something into my glass of water this morning because looking back at this thread I am shocked I really spent that much time typing about a late night show?

You know. You think leno's level is at the peak-douchiness, and then he pulls something like this.

Look, jay, you hid in the freakin' boardroom to figure out who was winning the late-night war years ago. NBC pays your over-entitled bills, puts up with second-rate jokes as long as they don't get too many complaints, and has given you far more chances than you deserve as a mediocre dumbed-down comic. That you have the chutzpah to then bite that hand?  Maybe it's about time leno finally reaps what he's sown for so many years..

The Leno hate is unwarranted.

I think Conan is fantastic, but c'mon, his limited appeal is what makes him cool.  And let's face it, irony flies over the heads of most of the country.  Leno found tried and true jokes that work for the majority of the TV viewing public, who just happen to have a 5th grade reading comprehension level.

It takes a huge amount of talent to appeal, and not offend, the giant swathe of conservative America.

Fallon is going to face the same problems Conan did.  He's the wrong choice.  A Tom Bergeron, or  a Drew Carey, would be massively more appealing.

It's stunning that Leno is even couching his situation as backstabbing, when he's the one given a second life after a contract he originally agreed said he'd be done with NBC years ago.
