huh didn't realize they still had cable driven ferries.  They used to be all up and down the Monongahela river, there is exactly one remaining and I've been told it's the only one in the eastern USA still in operation.

The Dukes of Hazard never seem to have that sort of trouble....

To be fair it is one of the shortest ferry crossing's I've ever seen.  But not that short.

I don't know if there are others, but White's Ferry is the last ferry crossing of the potomac.   It's boat, the General Jubal Early is cable driven.   Of course, the Potomac at that point isn't very navigable at that point. You could walk across it at most times of the year (depth is only about 3').

Another one?  I was expecting this to be about the car that ran off the gabriola island ferry from a few days back.  So is this a copycat incident, coinkydink, or are the ferry-gods angry at us?

I'm calling it for a GPS farkup.

Correction: A driver farkup for following their GPS too literally.

Wonder if they were new to the area and thought it was a bridge of some sort.

Never heard of that one, might have to take a look next time I'm in the area. The one around here pretty much only still exists because of the prison. Lots of people live across the river and it cuts about 10 miles out from having to take the nearest bridge.

You have been misinformed.  The Hatton Ferry in central Virginia is still going strong.  See http://www.thehattonferry.org/  .

Whoa, hadn't realized it was a Canadian article until I saw these comments on the sidebar:

"Hmmm, insert the words "Liberal Party of Canada and/or "NDP" into this Straussian philosophy and you'll likely come out with the same result. "the masses haven't a clue..we'll tell them what they..."

"I always wondered how the CBC could get away with promoting itself in it's own ads all the time, using taxpayers money. $1.2 billion to the CBC from the feds. not sure why the public isn't..."

"It will be interesting if either Justine Trudoodoo or angry Tom Mulcair, as PM (LOL!) will hire Page? Not a chance."

It would appear Canada's Politics tab is The Chronicle Herald.

The Chronicle Herald is actually a fairly decent paper, but never read the comments.  Seriously, don't ever.

I was on a cable-driven ferry on the Frazier River in BC.  One would not want to fall into that river.

I'd believe it. It seems like there's been a massive spillover of YouTube commenters into every news site over the last couple years. It helps to make your local crazies more visible.

This happened on the ferry between Sydney and North Sydney?

http://thechronicleherald.ca/sites/default/files/u13/ferrymap1.JPG

Why didn't they just take the Sydney Harbour Bridge?

///People will do anything to avoid paying a bridge toll nowadays

Every year or so we get the "news" story about vacationers (usually European) who find themselves in Nova Scotia instead of Australia.
