Buttknuckle: InmanRoshi: neongoats: Don't you love seeing these full body tattoo people when they hit about age 50? Like someone laid an Archie comic book out in the sun for a month and splashed it with water a couple times.

Ooo, edgy.

You don't have to even wait until 50.  The tattoo art style will likely be dated within 10 years, just like tribal tats and barbed wire bicep tats have.  Everytime I see a 20 something with these stylized tat sleeves I think  " Congrats nitwit, you've just given yourself a permanent mullet".

Man, you should come over to my house for the Academy Awards.  I would love to hear your critique of the women's dresses each year.  You are gay, right?

So uh, is this how you normally find dudes to hook up with? I mean, I was always under the impression that gays were more efficient in their courtships, but damn.

riverwalk barfly: Not opposed to tattoos.  I don't have any.  My wife has a girly one on her ankle.   Davinci's cat.  My best friend who will be turning fifty (get off my lawn) this month, is getting one on his birthday.  With that said, why would you get the full body art that this girl has? There is something more going on in her Psyche.

She should have went with Schroedingers (sp). A tat of a box makes for a more interesting story. Though she could girlie it up with a ribbon or something.

My post saying she was a hag came because of all of these guys white knighting her saying she was pretty and then posting glamour shots so heavily shopped she looks inhuman.

She has made a career of being a loud mouth, a whiner, and hating on her own culture.  The tats were probably icing on the cake as an insult to traditional korean culture.

And what little attractiveness she does have is immediately lost by her behavior and attention whore attitude.

She was in a traditional spa, she should have shown some respect and put on the robe, instead she turned it into something about herself.

She is the Korean Andy Dick.

I disagree. She's the Korean John Waters.

And I'd argue that she'd consider the latter a compliment.

I don't know. Sometimes I find Margaret Cho funny, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I think I would like to have sex with her, sometimes I don't.

Sorry, got nuthin'.

Exactly.

I have a friend who dates this Puerto Rican girl who can barely speak three words of Spanish, but blares reggaeton, has the Puerto Rican flag all over her car, and every time I see her she has a Boricua tshirt.

I asked her if she had some indian blood, and she said hell no her family was pure spanish.

I informed her that while it is common for her peeps to call them selves Boricuas, that the Boricuas were the local tribe before the spanish got to the island.  She told me I was wrong and she had to check on that.

Same girl who had never heard the song Mi Viejo San Juan.

dittybopper: CPT.Goodlaw: blender61: the bottom line is that tattoos carry a cultural connotation that is unacceptable in Korea.
she should know this, or does she think that an exception should be made for her because she is somehow special.

I was following this too until I read the part of the spa being in Los Angeles.  I think it is reasonable for a blend of cultures to take place when one tradition takes root somewhere else.

True enough.

However, you wouldn't go to a Jewish bakery and expect them to have deviled ham to schmear on your bagel, would you?

Also, it's not like she didn't have other spa choices.  She *CHOse* to go there, and unless she's completely tone deaf to the culture she was raised in, she should have known what the reaction was going to be.  I see her as being the unreasonable one here.

Ahhhh!  Jews don't use the word "schmear."  At least, not often at all.  I feel like someone (I'm looking at you, Einstein Bros Bagels) decided in 2004 to make it a thing.

I have to agree with your annoyance. I have many students that are the same way. Usually (because it's the Central Valley) I see Mexican-Americans who, while living a life whiter than mine, claim they truly understand Mexico.

I'm a poor white mongrel myself. I just recently found out, with documentation, that I have enough Cherokee blood to register as a Native-American. I won't.

The history, culture, and suffering of the Cherokee people is something I have never experienced. Unless I take the time to learn the history, understand the belief, and live the life, I'll never understand what it is to be Cherokee. Nor will my students learn the richness of what being Mexican is. Not without the work.

Off soapbox.

And now you know why I don't have tattoos.

Most tattoo artists will draw on you with a Sharpie at a reasonable rate if you have a really tattoo-appropriate social function to attend, and that way you can try out several styles. If I ever get permanent ink done, I'd like one of those ultraviolet ones that's only visible under blacklight. I could look appropriate at my favorite nightclubs and at my future kids' PTA meeting, and apart from being Coolest Mom Ever at the kid-check of Chuck E. Cheese and on dark rides at amusement parks, it'd be completely acceptable.

scotchcrotch: Full body tats?

That's true of pretty much every form of appearance-based rebellion. How else do you signal to like-minded people of whatever subculture you're hoping to clique up with, that you're one of them? People are social creatures, and a blanket refusal of all social norms whatsoever will leave you by yourself. Years ago, I refused to own a black leather motorcycle jacket with spikes all over it and shiat, or buy a pair of Docs. This on grounds that said fashion items were sort of expensive, given my low-rent lifestyle, and that every farking idiot I knew had them. All it did was get me invited to fewer parties and laid less.

Everybody has some way to feel superior to others - it's just kind of how humans are. InmanRoshi has the fact that he has no tattoos to feel good about. It's not a high bar, to be sure, but it makes him feel good. Other people have huge cocks, great jobs, giant brains, etc.. why shouldn't he have something?

Even more toxic than regular tattoo ink. fark that. Tattooing as an industry has issues. Repetitive, hackneyed imagery arising from the total lack of imagination of both the tattoo clients, and most of the people putting them on. If I see one more Mexican sugar skull, I think I'll puke. That, and near me, there's about 40 more places to get a tattoo than there used to be 25 years ago. The number of people who can competently execute a tattoo is only up by at most, 8.

2013-03-26 08:46:36 PM

Barricaded Gunman: DeepDownHounds: I think it's totally silly to say her ink looks like shiat. She has the money and the freedom to be worked on by world-class artists. Those aren't bullshiat onsie-twosie flash pieces picked off a wall, those are fully realized concepts and long, hard-earned sessions with undoubtedly talented world-class tattoo artists. That is literally (not figuratively) some of the best tattooing the world has to offer, and it sucks?

Right. Have you actually seen her tattoos? If that's truly the best the world's tattoo artists have to offer, then it's a pretty craptastic art form.

I agree that she should not be treated differently because of her tatoos. But the reality is that she is going to be treated differently by the other Korean ladies, and its not quite the same as Rosa parks on the bus. The business has no control over the hostility of the patrons and is trying to figure out a solution.

A reasoned response, on fark entertainment tab?

I don't think he'd have lost business over letting her be.  Those types of cranky old women have a tendency to complain but aren't so sensitive they'd stop going over that.

It's the principle of the thing, if it was white/black or christian/non or gay/straight you know it would make bigger headlines, and it would become popularly reprehensible for the manager to act that way.

She didn't complain "I can go to a spa"-- she complains "I went to this spa and look what happened this time". The point is that she grew up with has been to Korean spas before.

This is it.  If there was a published rule or a sign posted to say anyone with visible tattoos cannot enter the water, she wouldn't have gone and this wouldn't have happened.

But if the spa is in Los Angeles and there was no mention of it when she arrived, entered, visited the changing rooms, etc...  this all just reads like bitter older women complaining that things aren't like in the Old Country.
