the bottom line is that tattoos carry a cultural connotation that is unacceptable in Korea.
she should know this, or does she think that an exception should be made for her because she is somehow special.

I am happy in my skin and I am not sure what to say when others are not happy with my skin.

So happy, in fact, that you had to cover it in tattoos, all over, to show how much of a rebel and independent you are.  Why not change your name, while you're at it?  Maybe do something really eccentric with your hair, too, and don't forget the piercings - all to demonstrate to anyone who sees you how comfortable you are with being who you are, and you don't care what other people think.

That's exactly what she thinks.  Fierce Korean pride, but doing her best to offend everything that makes Korean culture what it is.

I was following this too until I read the part of the spa being in Los Angeles.  I think it is reasonable for a blend of cultures to take place when one tradition takes root somewhere else.

True enough.

However, you wouldn't go to a Jewish bakery and expect them to have deviled ham to schmear on your bagel, would you?

Also, it's not like she didn't have other spa choices.  She *CHOse* to go there, and unless she's completely tone deaf to the culture she was raised in, she should have known what the reaction was going to be.  I see her as being the unreasonable one here.

Unlike sexual orientation and skin color, tattoos are a choice.  I think it's reasonable for a private organization to set their own friggin rules as long as they don't violate anyone's civil rights.

"...Margaret Cho has revealed how she was forced to..."
and
"...[The manager] asked if I could please wear something..."

Sounds like yellow journalism to me.

She sucks, the whole of her comedy is:  my mother is traditionally Korean and I'm a whiny biatch, wanghhhh

I'll never understand the need for people to get full-body tattoos. I have a small tribal tattoo around my upper arm that women seem to love. I doubt they'd like it if it were a huge sleeve or back tattoo.

Also, go to a spa that is not Korean you stupid whore.

I'll never understand the need for people to get small tribal tattoos.  I have no tattoos and the women seem to love my bare body.  I doubt they would like me if I had tribal tattoos or other small tattoos.

Wow, those are just some AWFUL tattoos.  Just hideous.

Also, nothing says glory like Medusa.

2013-03-26 08:21:31 AM
It's so important to her - her "right" -to be naked with people who share her heritage, yet she wants to be able to offend them in the process.  Fantastic.  There's nothing oblivious her.

2013-03-26 08:21:51 AM
I know a woman who wanted to teach English in Korea. First question after getting through background and education stuff - Do you have visible tattoos?

If yes, you are not getting the job. People will not have their kids exposed to you.

I can't comprehend how Cho doesn't know better. Also the notion that they should adjust their culture to suit your shiatty ink is beyond me.

2013-03-26 08:22:04 AM
Not opposed to tattoos.  I don't have any.  My wife has a girly one on her ankle.   Davinci's cat.  My best friend who will be turning fifty (get off my lawn) this month, is getting one on his birthday.  With that said, why would you get the full body art that this girl has? There is something more going on in her Psyche.

No she wouldn't.  She still has that smashed korean face that many korean women seem to have, where 90% of her face is cheeks.

I'm always amazed when people with tattoos are SHOCKED that it is looked down upon by others.

not a fan of the ink but she is smokin' hot and funny.
About 20 years ago she did an HBO special wearing a leather jump suit and no bra she seemed stoned outta her Kim-chi crock but yikes she was hot.

She started out pretty funny until she decided to go 'Edgy', which she decided meant saying fark 4 times a sentence and talking about her pussy until people got uncomfortable.

Don't you love seeing these full body tattoo people when they hit about age 50? Like someone laid an Archie comic book out in the sun for a month and splashed it with water a couple times.

Ooo, edgy.

That seems to be whats really needed, her body is decent, but that head...yikes.

Well on the one hand she has a tattoo of Medusa's head which was used as a shield motif in some Hellenistic cultures because it would scare their enemies. On the other hand those are some awesome tattoos.

I don't know, maybe it's because I've always been a bit of a fruit fly but I still like her comedy. I also like most of her tattoos. And as pointed out before this spa was in LA and there should be reasonable expectation of cultural blending. As for comparing it to ordering ham in a Jewish deli I think that's a false equivalence though.

She looks like an aged hipster who has not done a day of exercise in her life, no muscle tone and pancake ass.  Not to mention the pancake makeup.  She really looks like an old asian crossdresser.

She can even fark up a glamor shot.

You know she used to have a career induced eating disorder right? How she was working out and dieting so much to the point (under the direction of a network, by the way, just so she could play herself) that her freakin kidneys collapsed on her one day. If she's genuinely happy with her body what business is it of yours?

I just wanted to join in the hate parade.

Margaret Cho sucks. She's not funny and was never funny.

I hereby request that we rename when a comedian fails onstage from "bombing" to "Cho-ing". They bombed, they Cho'd.

If she's genuinely happy with her body, the comments of an anonymous poster on the internet won't matter one whit.

People that get noticeably UPSET about tattoos crack me up. "I hate tattoos, so she's stupid and I hate her because I think her tattoos are ugly!" While her comedy is a pandering mess and she is painfully unfunny (Both her Korean bits, and her new-found 'Queen of the Gays' persona), it has nothing to do with her tattoos. Her act is one thing, her skin is another thing entirely. I think it's totally silly to say her ink looks like shiat. She has the money and the freedom to be worked on by world-class artists. Those aren't bullshiat onsie-twosie flash pieces picked off a wall, those are fully realized concepts and long, hard-earned sessions with undoubtedly talented world-class tattoo artists. That is literally (not figuratively) some of the best tattooing the world has to offer, and it sucks? If you think her bodysuit is bad work...well, the shiat doesn't get any better, dude. We mock what we don't understand, and we reveal our ignorance in the process. Getting hateful and mad about tattoos is a great barometer for people like me to know who I don't have to take seriously.

No, but making it all about her looks detracts from an actual conversation. You don't like her comedy or think she's a sh*tty actress/personality you're free to include that as a topic for discussion as it is a valid/reasonable point. It's zeroing in on how hot or not (in this case not) a celebrity/female politician is that continually lands Fark on internet misogyny lists.

As for Cho-ad, who farking cares? Her act sucks, her TV show sucked and she appears to be an ugly person inside and out.
