Followed by Jefferson Hemp?

The presidential home reconstructed Washington's distillery and will make more than 1,100 bottles of unaged whiskey available beginning April 4. The bottles sell for $95 each.

It's cool that they're reviving the recipe and all, but I don't think I'd lay down close to a hundred bucks on a bottle of unaged rye. If I keep an eye on the sales, I can usually pick up a bottle of 10 year old Whistlepig for around fifty.

Will they have to call out the army to go fight the locals in Western Pennsylvania over taxes on whiskey now too?

I hope so.

The thing about Washington Rye is that it sneaks up on you.

Unaged rye whiskey? Is that even a thing? Certainly would change the flavor profile.

I went to see the mill/distillery a few years back.  Definitely worth a visit.

I'd love to try it just for the sake of trying it but not at that price.

No different than unaged corn liquor, a.k.a. Moonshine.

It's not moonshine; unless it's made in a bathtub by a guy named Clem!

/ even if it is raw grain alcohol

There's a reason they use corn instead of rye when moonshinin'. Corn is cheap. Rye is a little more expensive.

Yes and it can be nasty if you aren't used to it.  Smells like rye bread (duh) with woody and grassy notes.  Seems to be big in Virginia - there are at least 3 other distillers in VA I've seen that have unaged (green/young/whatever) rye whiskey they sell.

The Washington fanbois are just trying to compete with Jefferson's bourbon

Yeah... I prefer my spirits to hang out in barrels for a while. This unaged stuff is very interesting from a historical perspective, but gastronomically speaking it's probably better for removing that sticky residue after you've peeled the price sticker off of something.

Doesn't look like you can order it online though. :(

I had actually seen the distillery in a segment of How Stuff Works on whiskey. Its pretty neat, the whole operation is done exactly how it was done in Washington's time. Worth a watch..

Rye whiskey, rye whiskey, rye whisky I cry
If I don't get rye whiskey, well I think I may die
Gonna go up to yonder holler, gonna build me a still
And I'll sell you a gallon, for a five dollar bill

Well it's beefsteak when I'm hungry, rye whiskey when I'm dry
Greenbacks when I'm hard up, and heaven when I die

Well if the oceans were whiskey, and I were a duck
I'd swim to the bottom, and never come up
But the oceans not whiskey, and I ain't no duck
So I'll sing the Jack of Diamonds, and trust to my luck

I am beyond shocked and appalled that people are making money off his cherished recipe. His was a labor of love, not of profit, and this drink was created solely for the enjoyment of his friends and family. Indeed, after a night of sipping on this drink Washington's own father implored him to create several barrels to sell across the country, but George just shook his head and muttered these famous words:

"Father, I cannot sell a rye."

Washington's Whiskey Recipe

The recipe, or "mash bill," calls for 65 percent rye, 30 percent corn and 5 percent malted barley.

First, grind the grains into a coarse meal. Then, mix the rye and corn in a wood vessel called a "hog's head." Add hot and cold water. Stick your hand in the mash to make sure it isn't too hot. If it doesn't burn, the temperature is just right. Add barley and stir.

Cool the mixture down a bit more, and add yeast. Let the mixture ferment for a few days.

Pour the mixture into a copper still, and let it boil. The alcohol will vaporize and condense, flowing out of a tube, also known as a worm.

Collect the liquid and run it through the copper still one more time. Now you have finished whiskey.

Washington barreled his whiskey and sold it immediately. These days, distillers age it for a few years to improve its taste.

If they think they can spare the capacity, might as well cash in on the latest trend.  Might not pan out in the long run but by then the management will be running after the next trend.

A few years ago they released a blend of American whiskeys aged in Washington's barrels.  I bought a bottle as a gift for my dad and it was pretty tasty.  That, I would buy again, but it wasn't nearly as expensive as this stuff.

/Don't mind paying a little bit more if it supports Mount Vernon and the distillery, but not tons more.

2013-03-26 11:32:08 PM
I'd try it.
