Listen to "I Saw the Sign" by Ace of Base, then Maroon 5's "One More Night" and tell me if those are close enough.

2013-03-26 12:45:39 AM
Maroon 5 deserved some number one singles from Songs About Jane.  The shiat they've churned out since then does not merit such consideration.

does it cost as much as it did back then to buy a #1 single?

never heard of them that I know of

'i saw the sign' remains pretty catchy and that's all that I want is another....um....whatever

Pfffft. I used to like Maroon 5 when they were still Maroon 1. Now that they're all mainstream, they're totally lame.

Jeebus, that Ace of Base album was 19 years ago? Fark me that makes me feel old.

"....and Ace of Base is still the better band" should have been the rest of the headline.

How sad are you Maroon guys!

I hear that whiny Adam lavine voice I cringe a little and change the station... I also laughed when he played some guy in American Horror Story Asylum and got his arm ripped off.

Him and that Bruno mars bars guy. Ugh.

Ok it is not alright for grown adults to get pissed off about popular music.

My parent's generation got pissed off about Nirvana and Public Enemy
Their parents generation got pissed off about The Who and Led Zepplin
The generation before got pissed off about Sinatra and Elvis
the generation  before got pissed off about Glen Miller
the generation before got pissed off about Irving Berlin
the generation before got pissed about Gilbert & Sullivan
the generation before got pissed about Henry Clay Work
and so on and so forth

screw it all getting old sucks, but really explore deeper then the radio, deeper then what is popular.
you're an adult, you're not supposed to like the majority of what kids who you're old enough to have parented like...

It's not the same.  You can't compare 20th century charts to those from the 21st century.

The current Billboard singles chart counts YOUTUBE VIEWS.  Let that sink in for a second.

My dad didn't get pissed at me when I listened to Husker Du and The Replacements, probably because he listened to The Who and Led Zeppelin.  I only get pissed when I hear the oldest boy listening to dumb radio music, like Maroon 5, which is like the same dumb Duran Duran stuff from the '80s as was the same dumb Ace of Base stuff from the '90s.

At first  was kinda perplexed by this overwhelming respect farkers have for Maroon 5. But then I learned that they write their songs and play real instruments and it all made sense

Ace of Base's 3 #1's off the same album were only on the Canadian chart; nowhere else did Ace of Base even HAVE 3 #1 hits in their career, on the charts I just looked up...also Mariah Carey had 3 straight #1s on Canadian charts off an album in 95; and 5 straight off an album on the US charts.

Correct on both counts.

She's the only female artist to ever have 5 #1 singles from one album (Teenage Dream). The only other artist to ever accomplish this was Michael Jackson with "Bad".

Sorry, man, but it's not relative to generational curmudgeonry..   I can find you a 20 year old that likes every act you listed and still thinks Maroon 5 is sh*t.

Lack of exploration is moot, since we're talking about what's on the radio.  And yes, chart toppers have almost always sucked more than the neglected artists, but the talentlessness and paint-by-numbers aspect of the pop music industry has grown exponentially over the years.

Did you know that the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" was the number one hit in 1969?  Preposterous, I know, but I'll take "Sugar Sugar" over anything topping the charts now.  It's not because I'm old or I've changed.  It's because autotune and television exposure isn't as good as vision and practice.

Funny thing... A musician buddy of mine in SoCal was actually hyping them (M5) to me years ago, well before they broke out. As soon as they made it, he erased his memory of them and to this day swears he never liked them.

^^ This ^^

I was dragged to a show by a girlfriend back in the early 2000's where they were the opening act for Vanessa Carlton and they played "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails. You could hear the audible gasp of the parents and teenage girls in the auditorium. It was awesome. What happened to that?
