Mugato: Taylor says Nava had a handgun and a bag containing duct tape, trash bags and latex gloves

Who doesn't?

"What is it, the first hole I dug? Not the first time I dug a hole."

CSB:
I was driving around with my absurdly hot girlfriend when we were in high school, and some thugs started following us, for like a half hour.  Finally I drove up to the police station and started leaning on the horn.
They cleared out most rapidly.

Gyrfalcon: Because then the story would be:

"she saw a police cruiser parked on the shoulder.  She pulled over and was shot in the back of the head."

I kind of doubt that. If she'd pulled over, she'd have been shot in the front of the head.

Would you rather be shot in the back of head or the front of the head?

Si Robertson: I would rather not be shot at all, if I have a choice in the matter.

My friend got carjacked, guy with a knife got in at a light at 2:00 am one night and told him to drive.  They came to an intersection with a cop car and the guy told my friend to be cool.  My friend floored it through a red light, honking his horn like crazy.  Cops got the guy and my friend got away just fine, but he was lucky.

That was pretty sensible of him.  Seems obvious from the armchair, but I bet a lot of people would be too scared of the guy to try it.  Same with this girl.

Why would she have to hit the cruiser? Why isn't the story:

"she saw a police cruiser parked on the shoulder. She pulled over and jumped out to tell the officer what had happened. "

The "gun" turned out to be an airsoft gun. There's a better article that this one is linked to.

/ it was a AkArGlock assault airsoft gun

Did the girl know that?  A lot of those airsoft guns look frighteningly realistic, especially to someone who might not have much experience with guns.

The girl did the smart thing here: she created a diversion with the collision, then ran for it.

Airsoft guns have orange plastic tips; they are very easy to distinguish from the real deal. Some look more realistic than others; if you haven't ever seen a real gun, you could mistake an airsoft gun for the real deal.

She acted correctly; I was just pointing out that there wasn't actually a gun involved.

/ my paternal grandmother once hit the same highway patrol car 3 times in quick succession. In her defense; it was very icy out.

I would think her chances of escape would be higher with her scenario.  She's expecting it and has planned what to do, her abductor hasn't.  The impact will almost certainly disarm her abductor.  She will be in an even better position if she was belted and her abductor wasn't.

I've seen this suggested before as a way to escape a kidnapper.

Some out of luck unprepared person. I'm sure not gonna let them use mine!

But does she know where her towel is?

Jokes on you. With duct tape, trash bags, and latex gloves...she can make her own towel.

Xanadone: There's a link on that page to an earlier story about the crazy woman's arrest.  Seems the teenager is the birth mother.

HER mother, AKA grandma, is the crazy one.
She evidently WANTS her grandchild and was planning on killing the adoptive parents.
(why else the murder kit in the bag?)

If I were going to hijack someone's car and hold them hostage with an airsoft gun, I'd remove or paint over the orange tip. Which might also be why the initial reports had it as a real gun. Just saying.

It seems no one can read past the first paragraph

"45-year-old Floribert Nava of Wildwood demanded the girl take her to the home of the family that had adopted the recently born child. "

How the eff can a newborn even reach the damn pedels?!?!?!?!?
Or have reached puberty!

I think Obama needs to answer for this!

This is strange to me. My car automatically locks when I put it into drive and doesn't unlock until I'm back into park. So this could never happen with a newer car..

Often you can turn that option on or off. Most people don't know it, but if you read your owner's manual you'll find all kinds of nifty stuff. When I got my last car I turned off the auto-lock and the horn beeps on remote lock / unlock.

Actually, she DID have a real handgun as well on her person, with a Airsoft gun in a bag with the other items.
