Imagine if it was bear infested.
Or infested by wolverines or honey badgers! But, to be fair, a coyote infestation is still pretty dangerous territory.

willfullyobscure: still not good enough to justify a 30 round magazine. she would have done fine with 10 or even 5 round clips. A Ruger Ranch would have been perfect. Claiming otherwise is just an excuse for AR owners to jerk off .

ah, you droll troll.

You haven't been here long enough. One day your butthurt will melt away and you will learn to poke crass fun at the morbid.

UNPOPULR OPINION

Having lived in "coyote infested" areas and having walked around at night in same parts and having encountered coyotes...

Maybe.. just maybe ...
It doesn;'t mean shiat.

She is NOT A HERO OR A BMF for merely surviving in the first place
And anone not in a state of shock would go seeking help..

So she did what anyone else in her circumstance would have done
... seek aid in order to survive

I am sad that Americans now see desperation as an equal to heroism.
How low our bar has been lowered.

When will panhandlers be revered as heroes for "braving the extremes and the odds"?
Perhaps after our next 'publican President.

IDisME: If she needs money from the interweb, now would be the time to bring it up.  Seriously though, what a brave and smart little girl.

Whoa!  Vincent_blackshadow just tapped us all out.  Maybe if she asked Oprah nicely...

Just out of curiosity--since survival doesn't seem to be it--what exactly WOULD be your criteria for heroism?

I mean, obviously anyone who does their job (like a cop or firefighter or soldier) wouldn't be in; and now anyone who hikes out of a canyon at night, even if they are a child who's just been in a car accident is out; clearly anyone who does anything to ensure their survival isn't a hero; so pray tell, who WOULD be doing something heroic?

That faint, high-pitched sound you're hearing? That's rcain sobbing into his keyboard.

Thanks you two. The best I could come up with on my own was BubbleFishyMon (sorry, sometimes I forget I'm not on Slashdot) or biatchassMetaFarker (which I guess wasn't too far off the mark)

FTFA: she was "saddened" to hear he passed, and her sisters mentioned she connected with him more than her other fathers.

Gyrfalcon: 40 is cold in Southern California, and the coyotes down here will eat anything that can't get away from them.

A little girl is not coyote food. Maybe she'd get mauled if she played Croc Hunter and stuck thumb up a puppy's bum hole and mama heard the yelp. Much like wolves, coyotes have a bad rap from farmers who have to justify their wanton slaughter of innocent canids to themselves and their children.

But the real horror of this story is the car wreck. 2 miles at night in chilly weather with no bears or venomous snakes around is just a little nature hike. Any kid could do that. Losing your father in a car wreck and having to make that hike alone? That's mind breaking stuff.

I'm suitably impressed, but for the right reasons.

Coyote attack statistics.

Yeah, that's in Canadia. Down here, in L.A. and environs, it's not so much the coyotes in the wilderness (which, I grant you, is where this girl was) but the ones we get in the suburbs. The ones down in the city areas are getting habituated and are weirdly aggressive towards humans and especially littler ones. I've seen with my own two eyes coyotes that won't run from humans (kind of like raccoons that won't run, and bears that won't run), but will stand their ground like any feral animal. It's our own damn fault, of course, but that doesn't make them any less mean.

Given people's idiocy about cute little wild animals and the unpredictability of ANY wild animal outside its comfort zone, I'd just as soon kids, at least, were afraid of coyotes and didn't want to get within a nuclear mile of them. For everyone's sake.

Terrible thing for the girl.
Comments on the bottom of the article weirds me out :/
"The only father around her that stuck"? Most of us have just the one.
