Ugh, sometimes I hate my empathy. This guy is a total asshole who tried to be a counter-culture "internet tough guy" and got put in his place for a truly despicable mindset. I absolutely believe that he merits punishment because I also believe freedom of speech does not equal freedom from consequence.

... However, knowing everything he did and is, I get a pang of such empathy and pity when I see a picture of a grown man crying like that; in such a way that he knows he's tarnished his professional credentials irreparably. He knows his way of life is essentially over. My brain knows he is reaping the rewards of his own efforts, but my heart feels awful for him. I am thankful that my brain ultimately wins out here, but I cannot feel any of the schadenfreude satisfaction here or a glib appreciation of karma. I see a bigoted pock mark on society, but I also see a broken man. I feel bad for him, and that disgusts me.

Um... are you holding the NY Post up as an example of a reputable publication?

It seems that nearly every Daily Mail article about some welfare queen or other contentious subject matter is written off as "Daily FAIL!!!" within 5 posts. Strange to see that completely absent from this thread, even after 100+ posts, and particularly with the way that article was written.

He also said, 'I'm really a dirty pervert. I see a girl with tight pants on and my eyes immediately focus on her crotch to look for camel toe.'

Yea, I think it's pretty relevant that a guy paid by the city to take care of people of all races, genders, and nationalities when they're at their most vulnerable hates a good chunk of those people and dehumanizes and sexualizes some of the others.

A guy who's comfortable admitting he's a gross pervert is not a guy I want taking care of me while I'm unconscious.

And I mean... they were directly quoting from his twitter page. Those were his own words.

The worst part about this--besides the blatant ignorance--is the mayor is in a bad spot, sort of.

As a human being, the mayor might have it within himself to say "I'm a human being, too. I make mistakes. And I would hope people would be able to forget and move on. And if this guy is a real tool, that's on him."

But as mayor, he's got to make a call to someone and tell them to fire this guy. Because if the guy doesn't get fired, then some other idiot is going to say or do worse things.

Meh. The FD will fire him or retire him with pay. He'll probably appeal, win millions in a civil suit for emotional suffering from being made an Internet Meme, then get his job back.

Oh well...

groppet: I know of at least 3 people I work with that got fired over stuff they posted on social media thinking they were safe or something. Guess he shoulda had 7 proxies and a few secret identities.

What kind of things did they post? I'm curious.

Personally I tend to not post anything on social media because that's the safest option and you never who is going to get offended about what, but it's always good to know what you specifically need to shut up about.

Bullseyed: Why exactly is this man being bullied over his freedom of speech rights?

Because freedom of speech only means he can't be jailed for being an idiot. It doesn't mean he can't be publicly shamed for being an idiot, and it certainly doesn't mean he can't be fired for violating conduct codes.

But you already know that.

I am not aware of them accusing someone of racism or any other -ism or serious character assassination of an unknown person with no evidence to back them up.  So, again, do you have an example that goes beyond the typical tabloid-type garbage?

I'm an Athiest, but technically I'm Jewish. Actually going to  my dad's for Passover tonight.

Anyway, when I was younger, I was so interested in reading about Nazis, that I bought the following Nazi magazine from the early 40s on Ebay. It was written by Dr Robert Ley (who cheated his death sentence by hanging himself by tying something to the base of his sink and leaning forward a nd manually strangling himself).

Here is what the magazine looked like.

Anyway, what made me feel really guilty, was that stuck inside the pages of the magazine I bought, was an envelope from Auschwitz, possibly the last letter ever sent by some poor soul.

On the outside of the envelope was written the following propoganda, by the Camp Kommandant: This is what it said  in German:

Concentration Camp Auschwitz
Mailing with camp prisoners is subjected to the following prescriptions:
  1. Every protective-custody-captive is allowed to send or to receive two letters or postcards from his relatives. Letters sent to prisoners must be written clearly and with ink, and must have a maximum of 15 lines per page. Only one piece of normal sized notepaper is permitted. Lined envelopes are not allowed. Including more than five 12 Pfg-stamps in the envelope is not allowed. Including everything else is forbidden will be seized. Postcards have 10 lines. It is not allowed to use photographs as postcards.
  2. It is permitted to send money to the prisoners.
  3. All consignments must carry the correct address, which means name, date of birth and number of the prisoner. If the address is not correct, the mail will either be returned to sender or destroyed.
  4. Newspapers are permitted, but can be ordered only via the postal service of the Concentration Camp Auschwitz.
  5. The sending of parcels is not allowed, because the prisoners can buy everything in the camp.
  6. Sending release from protective-custody requests to the camp board is useless.
  7. It is principally not permitted to talk with prisoners or visit them in the concentration camp.

Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not. Looks like this one is legit. Not sure why you feel the need to bust out your martyr complex over this one, but hey, here we are. In particular your knee-jerk rant about the NY Post was an unintentionally hilarious reaction. The Gothamist has an article with a little more background (ie. the NY Fire Department's Commissioner's own SON also just quit the EMS after a bunch of raicst tweets of his own were appraently unearthed). Is it that you're just identifying with him a little too much perhaps?

And as far as it not being newsworthy:
A. Welcome to Fark. Not everything posted here is strictly "newsworthy". That's how it is here.
B. A Fire Department official in one of the nation's largest cities being a massive racist who publicly made racist remarks about the citizens of the city AND the mayor himself is in itself certainly newsworthy in my opinion. I see that you disagree, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. You may want to consider that NYC's "stop and frisk" policy is being challenged in the courts right now, and so reports of blatant racism within the ranks of NYC's first responders right now are a little extra newsworthy then usual.
C. The NYC FD has a history of issues with racism and within the last few weeks just wanred everyone that they need to watch the racism in their social media accounts after the Fire Department Commissioner's son was recently outed with the same kind of racist crap.

Interesting.

Here's an article talking about similar restrictions on mail at a different concentration camp:

"While the Japanese Americans were staying at the internment camps their mail was supervised. An article by the Topaz Times titled, "Instructions Released on Internee Mail," explained the process that the internees along with the internment camps took before sending their mail. All of the internees had to send their mail to New York with the title "Prisoner of war mail-free" at the upper right-hand corner. This new rule was established to censor what the Japanese Americans were allowed to say to either others in internment camps or others outside of the internment camps."

Of course Topaz (and the other US camps) were NOT Auschwitz - but the criteria for selecting who would be interned was similar (national origin /  race - whether men, women or children - and without regard to any crime committed or any overt "threat" to the Reich)

Not all that dissimilar, really.

Except that the war never made it to US soil, and the prisoners of the US weren't plagued with diseases such as typhus, and there were no mass executions (obviously).

And unlike the Germans, we won the war.

You can read more here - if you're interested.

The Gothamist link with links to the background on the Commissioner's son who just got nailed by the same damn stupidity.

In this Metro.us link they mention that the NYFD just even tipped everyone off that they should be careful about their social media posts.

So if you're wondering who had it in for the poor widdle racist the answer is... nobody. He did this to himself. The FD Commissioner's son just recently got busted for the same thing, the FD warned everyone that they were checking social media..... and then this guy got caught when he failed to clean up his shiat - after being warned - after someone checked his Twitter. My guess is sinince the Commissioner's son just got busted not just the NYFD is looking, but all the journalists around there as well...

I believe you're being just a tad disingenuous.  US military/civilian mail was also censored so on that basis - censorship - are you suggesting the bases at which the soldiers were stationed were also concentration camps?  Of course, one could argue they were in the strictest sense of the word, because they were "concentrations" of troops.  But somehow I don't think that's the parallel you're trying to draw.  Did the US government start rounding up people of Japanese American origin before or after 7th December '41?

So actually yes, they were quite dissimilar.

No, but as I was comparing mail censorship in Auschwitz to that in US concentration camps, and you extended that comparison to US military bases, I can only assume that you are trying to compare US military bases to Auschwitz.

Is that so?

ACunningPlan:  Of course, one could argue they were in the strictest sense of the word, because they were "concentrations" of troops.

One could, but it would certainly be a fatuous argument.

ACunningPlan: But somehow I don't think that's the parallel you're trying to draw.  Did the US government start rounding up people of Japanese American origin before or after 7th December '41?

The US government began laying the groundwork for the internment of US citizens/ residents of Japanese descent as early as 1939:

From Wiki:

"In 1939 through 1941, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) compiled the Custodial Detention Index (CDI) on citizens, enemy aliens and foreign nationals, citing national security. On June 28, 1940, the Alien Registration Act was passed. Among many other loyalty regulations, Section 31 required the registration and fingerprinting of all aliens older than 14, and Section 35 required aliens to report any change of address within five days. In the subsequent months, nearly five million foreign nationals registered at post offices around the country."

ACunningPlan: So actually yes, they were quite dissimilar.

Again, the original comparison was WRT mail restriction/ censorship in the two concentration camp systems.

As to the camps themselves, under BOTH both systems, they initially were put in place under the guise of "national security" interests, allegedly for the purpose of isolating and sequestering persons (or rather, classes of people) that the respective governments claimed were hostile or subversive, or presented an imminent or potential threat to national security. The primary differences in between the two were in the scale, the scope and the outcome, NOT in the alleged intent.

I should think that excusing or diminishing that which was done to the Japanese by the Americans would be every bit as reckless as ignoring that which was done to the "guests" of the Nazis (and others).

The Holocaust was a terrible thing - a black mark on humanity.

God forbid that we should fail to learn from such events.

Wouldn't you agree?

They were "involved" in that many zionists were pushing for a place in Israel.

They were behind drives to get people there, to mkae it livable, to popularize it etc.

What they weren't was "behind" the big events wolrd events that made it possible.  WWII, the holocaust, etc.  All the things you like top pretend eviel jewish zionis were secretly pulling the strings for.

Are you drunk?

Amos Quito: liam76: Amos Quito: liam76: Amos Quito: If you can't contest facts

Why don't you explain to him your theory on Jews in general and zionists in particular being behind the events that lead to the formation of Israel.

Make it clear to him you are an antisemite.

Better still, why don't you explain your theory on how "Jews in general and zionists in particular" were in no way involved in "the events that lead to the formation of Israel"

Are you now going to pretend you don't think Jews in General and zionists in particular were behind those events?

That would be a change of tact, as you have been accused of it numerous times (and admitted the WWII one) and normally just change the subject, or make thin accusations about jewish skulldruggery, turn around and accuse me of antisemetism, or ask me to quote where you said it directly, you have never said "I don't think that".

So, what tune are you going to dance to this time?

Okay, so you DO believe that "Jews in general and zionists in particular" were "behind the events that lead to the formation of Israel".

Well, that's a new twist.

liam76: What they weren't was "behind" the big events wolrd events that made it possible.

What do you mean by "behind"?

liam76: WWII, the holocaust, etc. All the things you like top pretend eviel jewish zionis were secretly pulling the strings for.

See? This is why I asked you about "the voices" that seem to speak to you from the ether. I have never said, nor do I believe that Jews OR Zionists were "secretly pulling the strings" that brought about WWII or the Holocaust. This is all the product of your word-twisting wild imagination. Is your problem caused by a pitiable psychological condition? Or is it simply shameless dishonesty? I can't say with certainty. Possibly a combination of the two.

liam76: Are you now going to pretend you don't think Jews in General and zionists in particular were behind those events?

Oh, I've been ACCUSED, have I? Well, there you have it, folks!

liam76: (and admitted the WWII one)

Cite that - in my words - in CONTEXT - and with a direct link to the quote. And keep your silly interpretative insinuations tucked safely behind your rectal sphincter, mmmkay?

Thanks.

Are you demented or simply dishonest, liam76?

We shall see.

Amos Quito: MagSeven: hardinparamedic: Amos Quito: Oh, great. Accusing me of anti-Semitism. How novel.

You've earned that label on FARK with your bizarre diatribes against Jewish people and the Jewish faith in general, Amos. Even in threads where the Jews aren't mentioned in any form, or even relevant, you somehow manage to bring them in often.

I think the lady doth protest too much.

I actually have him favorited as an "anti-semite" but I can't recall the thread where I threw that label on him. Must have been a while ago.

Meh. I suspect that it was nothing more than one or more asshats making bullshiat accusations in response to things I said that they don't like.

If you can't contest facts, ACCUSE!!!

It is to be expected.

Read their tripe and weigh it against the evidence.

You'll quickly find out who the bigoted asshats are.

Right BronyHardinpseudomedic?

Right liar76?

LOL!

Ah, hypocrisy. LOL.

Aaaand apparently liam76 has folded.

Not that it will stop him from regurgitating and re-chewing his carcinogenic cud in the next thread.

Amos Quito: Okay, so you DO believe that "Jews in general and zionists in particular" were "behind the events that lead to the formation of Israel".

No.

There were behind the specific acts I mentioned.

They weren't behind WWII, they weren't behind the holocaust, and they weren't behind the antisemitism that had caused hundreds of years of oppression and pogroms.  Those were all things that were critical to the formation of Israel.

Amos Quito: I have never said, nor do I believe that Jews OR Zionists were "secretly pulling the strings" that brought about WWII or the Holocaust.

That is in direct contradiction to your claim that they were behind the events that led to the formation of Israel as those two events were big drivers for the formation of Israel.

Sorry, I don't keep a list of your insane ramblings, that would be a full time job.

Once again, dealing with your nonsense would be a full time job

So you admit that I never said any of the things that you incessantly CLAIM that I said, but that your accusations were merely exaggerations - your shamelessly trying to put words in my mouth in the hopes of smearing me.

From my post above:

"Are you demented or simply dishonest, liam76?
We shall see."

Dishonest simpleton it is, then.

Good Friday to you, liam76.

You said they were behind WWII, as I said I am not going to be assed out to track down all your nonsense.

And unless you are changing your stance on them being behind the events that lead to the formation of Israel, then you think they are behind WWII and the Holocaust, as those events were integral to its formation.

You know what ELSE was "integral" to the formation of Israel, liam76?

upload.wikimedia.org

Plate tectonics.

Without plate tectonics, the land mass on which Palestine/Israel is geographically located would not exist.

So now I expect that you'll be accusing me of SAYING that "Jews in general, and Zionists in particular" were "behind" plate tectonics.

Right liam76?

lulz.

I'll take irrelevant, non sequitorial rebuttal for 100, Alex.

The answer is: "What Amos Quito just did."
