The question is, what is Project Phoenix that Blizzard is currently running a F&F Alpha for?

New MMO?

Blizzard: "We couldn't require always online for consoles, so we had to remove the real-money auction house to compensate for the reduced ability to prevent duping."

Players: "PLEASE DO THAT TO THE PC VERSION TOO"

Well, since D3 was a huge disapointment (at least to me), that's not saying much.

Path of Exile's better anyways.

Meh. I could probably get more fun out of just running Skyrim as a dungeon crawler.

I thought D3 was fine. Not great, fine. After 12 years, great would have been nice.

But I imagine that roughly 100% of people who want to play it already own it. I don't think there are a lot of Blizzard fans who were waiting with baited breath for a console release. If the best they can do to improve this version is remove some of the crap that should have been gone with the first patch, I doubt there are going to be many takers.

No. I have been a fan of Diablo since 2 and played the shiat out of that one for years. The always on 'feature' killed 3 for me. I did play the demo version and it was fun enough but no way I was paying $60 and forced to be always on. My internet isn't the greatest and I refuse to buy games that are going to force me to rely on my internet connection. I prefer to play solo anyway and am looking forward to D3 for PS3 once the price is ~$30. I have absolutely no problem waiting a year or two for the price of games to drop.

Perhaps 100% of pc gamers, but believe it or not, there are a lot of us who only game on consoles. I realize pcs don't need monthly updates anymore, but I got tired a decade ago, and never looked back. Don't game enough to worry about it.

So, if they remove the mandatory online (I don't use Xbox Live), I'll pick it up on sale.

If you think 100% of the people who want to play D3 bought it on PC, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

The console version will handily outsell the PC version, just you watch.

Plus DURRRR the console version is better. Games like Diablo are tailor made for a controller, there is no rational argument that a mouse and keyboard is a more enjoyable experience for that style of game than a controller. This is not an FPS.

Both valid points, but that's why I mentioned Blizzard fans specifically. They aren't exactly known for non-PC games, so pretty much anyone who is a fan of their franchises probably IS a PC gamer.

Sure, there are some people like yourselves who either A) used to be PC gamers and now aren't or B) considered the DRM to be a dealbreaker, but I'm sure they are the minority. And anyone who was willing to wait this long for the game will probably wait even longer until it's on sale for $30. Not a huge target consumer base, is what I'm getting at.

My 5 year old PC plays Borderlands 2 pretty well with no upgrades and nearly all the graphics settings on high.  And it wasn't even top of the line when I built it.  But do keep regurgitating that stupid meme, it'll catch on again I'm sure.

There's no ANY auction house, even gold. Can you even trade stuff w/ people? What about trading w/ randoms online? If you can trade stuff, then d2jsp will arise like a glorious phoenix to sell duped perfect rolls to everybody and anybody. Yes, there is an account rollback "hack" on D3 that can dupe stuff slowly, but so far nothing has topped the Hammer Baal bots and their endless supply of high runes. D3's biggest integrity problem is gold botting, just like Warcraft.

2013-03-25 02:28:01 PM
Oh, but I wish we could get stick/WASD controls on PC. During development, I had hoped we'd finally get rid of click-to-move. So clunky, so awkward, didn't even feel good on D2. The ability to move one way and attack in another is huge.

I have a machine running Vista, so roughly 6 years old - also ran Borderlands 2 w/o a hitch.  Yes, I'm not trying it on a 27" monitor but 1680x1050 on a 22" looks damn good.  I think I paid a total of maybe $1200 for it THEN - so I guess "a thousands bucks a year" really equals ~$200 a year even if you factor in the initial system cost.

As far as Diablo 3 on console goes it would almost have to be a better game than what was launched for the PC - we've been Beta testing the thing for almost a whole year now.

Hotkeying spells/items is the best thing I can think about it.

Now what got me thinking was why Microsoft never allowed developers to create hotkeys for the controller keyboard. You know, this thing:

venturebeat.files.wordpress.com
If you could assign spells/items to the number keys, games would be a lot more fun. Dragon Age: Origins would've been great if it had that ability. I might have actually bought one of those if it allowed something like that.

I never did play D3 but from all of the gameplay video it looks like half of the screen is taken up by icons. While I am sure most PC gamers just hotkeyed, how the heck is  that going to work on a gamepad with 8(?) buttons.

You could build a pretty awesome rig for a thousand bucks these days. Only need about half of that money for a rig to play the latest games, though.

Doubtful.  What I do predict is 1-3 million more units, mostly ps3.  ps4 will sell less, due to it being newer, but diablo 3 may get some sales if it hits around launch, and there are otherwise few major third party titles.

I already have it on PC, and frankly, don't play it as is anymore, so unless they add something exclusive  earth shaking, i'm not buying it again.  I'll save my money for other titles, and my forthcoming wedding.

I just post this randomly sometimes because I find it impressive:

Diablo III set a new record for fastest-selling PC game by selling over 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours of its release.[4] It was also the highest selling PC game of 2012, selling more than 12 million copies during the year.[5]

There are actually only 8 buttons in the game as well.
6 action buttons + potion + town portal.
The rest are menus you could access from the start button.

My PC is probably close to $3000 with all the extras, but yeah what you said.  It's also completely over the top for what's out there currently and even in the near future.  The only non-typical parts that really make up  the bulk of the cost of it is the GTX 690 and my triple 120Hz displays.  Because 5760x1080 that's why.

You can really trim a lot of cost off a PC by taking one step back from the "absolute best available" and going for that. When I built my new one (about 4 years ago) I got basically one step off the best of everything and I paid about $1600. Installed Far Cry 3 the other day - put it on the highest graphical setting and there was never a hitch. There's nothing coming out in the near future that even comes close to requiring more than my computer puts out - and I imagine it will be another decade before that rig *can't* run something.

Well of course the console version of Diablo 3 is going to be the best version.

It was designed for a console, people even said that during the beta's when the control scheme dramatically changed and simplified.  The only thing people got wrong was they figured it'd be for the 360 not the next-next-gen machines.

Which is absolutely ridiculous.

It's more like $4000 up front for a passable gaming PC, and $1200 a year in maintenance and upgrades to keep it viable.

Oh absolutely, there's not much point in going for the Ultra expensive high end stuff these days.  I only went for the 690 because I was going triple display and wanted the same kind of performance at surround resolutions...so it was either a 690 or two 680's...since the price point was almost the same, I went for the more "ecological" option since the 690 uses less power.

Makes sense.

I've picked it back up lately, having more fun since the last patch, and soon they are finally doing away with things like strength on a wizard source or int on a barb belt.

Give me the ability to play offline though, sames as the console.

My over one year old $1600 (without monitor, keyboard and mouse but WITH an expensive case and some extra HDD storage) PC runs Tomb Raider with everything set to max while simultaneously streaming media to my living room, downloading torrents, and hosting my minecraft server. I'm pretty sure a new $3000 PC uses xbox 360s to clean it's teeth after eating PS3's for breakfast.
